To the thoughtless PRICK who left their puppy tied up outside he booze store on Quinpool on Friday evening. IT WAS -16 DEGREES OUTSIDE!! Yeah, I stopped and checked my phone for the temperature. That poor little puppy (wearing a pink color and Dalhousie sweater thing) was shivering and crying. The salt was clearly bothering her paws. There is NO reason why that dog needed to be there. If you’re going to be a pet owner, use some damn sense!! She may be an animal, but she is not immune to your stupidity, or the below freezing cold. I was of the mind to take off my own coat, wrap her up. I should have. I deeply regret not stopping and staying with her until you came out so I could have told you in person. —Hugging My Dog Closer

  1. That person is very lucky it wasn’t me who found the puppy because I would have reported it and had the person charged!

  2. Should have untied the dog and taken it in the LC and yelled anyone own this dog….might shame them in to not being so stupid.

  3. I never understand why people get a pet and then don’t have the decency to treat it well. Yes, it has fur but heck, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t get cold.

    Get a pet rock and get a string for a leash jackass.

  4. A shivering puppy? That sounds pretty bad, especially if the person was inside for awhile. Or it could be an oversensitive PETA freak crying foul over a non-issue. There are plenty of those everywhere.

    My dog waits outside for me when I go into a store, but he has a thick coat and I’m never gone for very long (5 minutes tops, enough time to get a coffee). Call me cruel, but he seems pretty content to wait (no barking, sad faces, whining), knowing that a reward awaits him on my return. I’d laugh in the face of anyone who accused me of cruelty.

  5. BEcause I really don’t know ….IF its illegal to leave a pet in a car on a hot day , & you can report them to the police/animal services.
    Why can that not be done at a time like this, we are having a very cold snap, & its damn cold for folks with old bones like mine !

    It sure makes me happy I got a woodstove (freezing cold outside, shorts & T shirt in my bare feet inside ~:)

  6. More:

    The temperature inside a car during the summer is usually much higher than it is outside, hence the rationale for reporting in that case.

    The temperature outside of a car in the summer/winter is just normal seasonal weather, so there is no similar rationale for reporting. Reporting in such a case would require an independent factor such as neglect, which is what the OB reported to the internet (not the SPCA, unfortunately).

  7. There was a dog tied up outside a liquor store on a cold evening….it’s OBVIOUSLY abused and mistreated.

    C’mon people, before you all go and form a lynch mob and demand this owner’s head on a pike, try getting the full story.

    Maybe he/she was just finishing up a nice brisk walk with their dog and the liquor store was on the way home? Maybe the dog was only out there for 5 minutes? (You don’t know how long this person was in the store) Or maybe this person really IS a lowlife animal abuser. We’ll never know though as OB admitted to not sticking around to find out. Oh but “I should have. I was of the mind to” So why didn’t you, OB? Instead, they just checked the temperature and said, “Sorry pup” (I’m guessing), left, and then wrote an anonymous “I should have..” bitch about it in a weekly newspaper.

    I have a dog and 2 cats and I love them and pamper them and spoil them rotten like any animal lover would. I personally don’t know how anyone could knowingly and willingly absue any animal. To me, anyone who does is one of the lowest forms of life on earth. But, I had my dog out on a leash last evening in -15 degree weather for approx 20-25 mins while I shoveled my driveway. (And she wasn’t wearing any sweater thing, Dalhousie or otherwise), and she had a blast! So, does that make me an animal abuser? What about the people I saw last night walking their dogs around the block? Would you automatically think the worst of them and call to have them charged?

  8. A young dog , isn’t set/developed to be tied up in freezing cold weather. Even a full grown healthy dog will not stand out in a freezing cold wind, its smart enough to go for cover …tied to a pole or something else won’t allow it to do so. All you gotta do is go outside in a a pair of pants & a shirt, in this temperature to realise on the sunny wind free side of a building, its not too bad, out in the wind, you get uncomfortably cold almost instantly !

  9. ok ob, stop patting yourself on the back for being such a saint amongst humanity, and you know why i say that? because you KNEW the puppy was in distress and did nothing except bleat away on a bitch column. you didn’t even give the puppy something to sit on. yes, the salt in the city is murder on dogs’ and cats’ paws and their tender bits. you could have picked the puppy up and held him in your arms til the owner got back. you could have gotten a bit of cardboard for the pup to sit on. and you should have stayed. you were not in a situation where you would have had to choose about breaking the law to save the pup (as in the case of ‘liberating’ a permanently chained dog) all you had to do was pick up that pup and stick around. owner is probably young and foolish. this incident may have enlightened them. but this bitch does nothing. nothing.
    anyone wondering about ns law and cold weather etc go to FB site ‘people for dogs’ esp right now. could use more people writing to mla’s. here is the relevant portion of the animal protection act…Duties of owners of animals other than farm animals
    22 A person who owns or is in charge of an animal other than a farm animal shall

    (a) ensure that the animal has an adequate source of food and water;

    (b) provide the animal with adequate medical attention when the animal is wounded or ill;

    (c) provide the animal with reasonable protection from injurious heat or cold;

    (d) not confine the animal to an enclosure or area with inadequate space, unsanitary conditions, inadequate ventilation or without providing an opportunity for exercise so as to significantly impair the animal’s health or well-being. 2008, c. 33, s. 22.

  10. It’s too bad the people here couldn’t have the same level of compassion for people that they do for the puppy in this post.
    Dogs still have to do their business when it’s freezing out; they need a little exercise, too. Imagine not taking your dog out for a week straight because the temp stayed below minus 10. Does anyone here know a toilet trained dog? I don’t! Assuming this dog was only out for a SHORT walk with his owner and a QUICK wait outside the shop, I think a bit of shivering would probably be preferred by the dog, over being couped up inside for an entire 24 hr period without getting his little legs stretched and bladder relieved! People shiver, so do animals; it’s how our bodies help us stay warm. I hardly think this is a case of animal abuse!!

  11. lucy, it may not have been, but ob didn’t stick around long enough to see. ob checked the temperature, but didn’t time how long the puppy was there. and we have no idea how long ob stood there. 2 minutes? 15?
    puppies do cry and whimper (some of them even when they are 4 yrs old) when they feel abandoned for 60 seconds. the salt on the paws and bottom is a legit concern. esp if they have any ice cuts on the pads or between toes. you can imagine what that feels like, but most dogs are so bloody grateful for a bit of a walk they would walk on stumps if they had to.
    however a puppy should not be left outside, unattended. for the same reason a baby shouldn’t. there are cruel people out there.

  12. sorry, i have to do double post…missed the bit about people. homeless people can at least get to shelter, they are mobile and have free will. same with cats. this puppy was tied. any dog that is tied or chained is at our whim and mercy, such as it is. which is why i voice concerns about dogs, rather than people.

  13. Fuck people!!!! They have choices, animals don’t. They don’t get to pick their owners, and they can’t leave if their owners are assholes. They love their owners unconditionally, even when they are being beaten and starved.

    My eight week old pup shivers and whines after being out for 2 mins in this weather, so she doesn’t get out much. Inside exercise, and puppy pee pad training for her until it warms up.

  14. It’s hard to tell from the post how long the dog was out. Some dogs shake because they are excited not necessarily because they’re cold. How does OP know the salt was bothering the dog’s paws? Dogs can take a little bit of cold, puppies are another question but I really don’t see any major problem here.
    My issue may more be with leaving the young dog out of your sight.

  15. If the dog is tied up outside for 5-10 minutes I don’t see the big deal. 20-30 mins would be a different story, but I mean I’ve stood outside in the cold for a more than a few minutes and it sucks but I’d hardly call it abuse. Granted I wasn’t tied to a post.

  16. Steve I’m wondering how your pup is getting along with your older dog,Dukie? Has Dukie shit in your shoes for introducing a new dog(baby sister,lol) into your pack?

  17. tf. the poster said salt was ‘obviously bothering her’ and probably meant the puppy was lifting her paws up one at a time. that would be either the salt, or the cold. if puppy was sitting in a pile of slush/snow, it would be the salt. if she was sitting on bare concrete, it would be because her little pads were starting to freeze to the ground.

    silly owner thought to put a cute sweater on the pup as a fashion statement, but left her paws unprotected. a puppy’s pads are not hardened off.

    and people so often point to a dog’s fur (it’s hair) and say they are wearing a fur coat. take a look at their bellies though. usually a lot of pink bare skin there. and their ears (or a cat’s ears) they freeze so quickly, the skin is thin and vulnerable on their ears.

    lol, tj, if you have never been tied to a post i guess you have never been the victim at a bachelor party. (do they still do that?)

  18. He had the chance – at an outdoor summit. But he passed it up (and a free beer), the Great Girl’s Blouse.
    ^^^

  19. Not a Bachelor Shout – it was a bridle party (not a typo). And yet another evening where Orgasmatron got hit on.
    Save some for the rest of us, you Wild Hog!

  20. Steve, I’m sorry for asking such a stupid question the other day.At times I just don’t think!I asked if Dukie was your child’s name;shit, I don’t know if you ever mentioned having children.

    I really have to- STOP MAKING STUPID GD ASSUMPTIONS.I forget there are couples out there without children.

  21. My neighbor always stuck her dog outside when it was cold. I took him in my house one day because I was tired of seeing him shiver and whimper. Well, guess what? He kept shivering and whimpering in my house. It wasn’t cold related- he just had anxiety because his owner was out. The puppy was probably shivering from the cold but just keep in mind they shiver for other reasons too sometimes.
