myself, i don’t know why canadians are still in the middle east, getting used as target practice for the u.s. asshles, that started this shit.
NATO had it usage at one point, but what the treaty has degraded into a tool that the US uses to force a multinational force on what would essentially be a unilateral conflict. I also think that the NATO treaty is only applicable to former Eastern Bloc countries and former USSR, so there lies another problem. That’s why we saw NATO enforcement for the short-lived Bosnia conflict.
After 40 years of being the weak-sister of NATO we’re paying the price in Afghanistan. Punching well above our weight, just as in every other war we’ve been involved in, while our other “allies” sit this one out. Whether you agree with the mission or not, Trudeau’s chickens have come home to roost and 150+ damned fine men and women have paid the ultimate price.
Of course, we lost over a dozen soldiers doing our “traditional” UN peacekeeping in the Balkans and not one of their ramp ceremonies was ever televised and they only rated a paragraph on page six. Perhaps that is what the Liberals and NDP are so nostalgic for.
A time when they didn’t have to pretend to support our military and their families; a time when they could safely dismiss us as second class citizens and third rate human beings.

Folks in the military are generally a lot more intelligent than politicians, the media and far too many of their fellow citizens give them credit for being. They can tell when a politician is lying; the lips are moving. They realize that the government of power will sell them out in a heartbeat. The Conservatives – for political expediency, the Liberals – out of principle and The NDP – out of sheer stupidity.

Isn’t Turkey a member of NATO? Makes me wonder why Israel can kill Turkish citizens but NATO turns a blind eye. So much for the old “an attack on one member is an attack on all.”
Turkey and Greece are both members of NATO. In the summer of 1974 they went to war in Cyprus. The Turks launched what at that time was the largest airborne/seaborne invasion since Normandy. Both sides perpetrated ethnic cleansing 15 years before the meltdown of Yugolsavia. And other Nato soldiers, most notably those of Canada and Britain were in the crossfire, with pretty Blue and White targets on their helmets.
NGF, Israel did not attack Turkey. To try to compare a bunch of idiots trying to provoke situations to an attack on a country is two different things.
Israel attacked civillians in international waters; first from above and then again after they landed on the boats. If I were one of the activists, I’d defend myself against an IDF fascist with whatever I got my hands on too.

NGF— The US (NATO) doesn’t want to provoke Turkey, they’re a vital supply link to Iraq, and it’s really the only country providing stability within the region.

You know what I find amazing is that Hamas yells they are starving and have no necessities, due to the blockade, yet they have no problem smuggling in arms, missles, and ammo. Fuck if they smuggle that shit in then why can’t they smuggle in necessities like food, clothing and other things. Think about that for a few minutes.
The civilians of Gaza aren’t necessarily members of Hamas. It’s fine in my opinion to prevent explosive material, ammunition, guns from being imported but the blockade has banned at certain points things like pasta that are not dangerous to anyone. Punishing civilians for the actions of the government and military forces is forbidden by the geneva convention last time I checked. Of course people nowadays don’t give a shit about human rights, war crimes, treaties, etc.
Sixxes is correct about Israel being a western style democracy.It is the only functional one in the region. Although with it’s multiplicity of political parties and succession of coalition governments that may be stretching the point a bit. And if it’s human rights record is a tad spotty, well, you need to set a compass heading of north-by-northwest and travel about 3000 kilometers before you encounter another country that even understands the term, let alone acknowledges it to be a good thing.
Hamas huggers and Hezbollah groupies can take heart. Soon there will be no more Israelis who were actually living at a time when politicians’ promises of a “final solution to the Jewish question” were meant to be taken literally.

And for the record, most historians believe that Marinus van der Lubbe acted alone in burning the Reichstag and according to Richard J. Evans in “The Coming of the Third Reich” there is a wealth of documentary evidence supporting this conclusion. It merely provided the Nazis an excuse to push through the Enabling Act, which would have come on any pretext. And it needs to be pointed out for us sticklers for accuracy, there weren’t several thousand people in the Reichstag when van der Lubbe torched it.
