Ain’t no etiquette involved. Proper crosswalk procedure is a survival skill.

This guy obviously doesn’t follow the news either, or he would have noticed the recent string of pedestrians that have been hit at crosswalks. I see it all the time…they walk off the curb like they’re wearing body armour. Not a bright idea.

Sad thing is sometimes even trying the cross the proper way isn’t always safe. It really depends who is trying to cross the road and the one behind the wheel.

Had a guy step out around 5 pm last night. the intersection was at a ‘T’ where a side street joined Pleasant street. He stepped out & I didn’t see him until I was on top of him he leaped & I slammed on the brakes! ! ! !
Not sure who got the bigger fright, but at this time of year just as its coming on dark, you pedestrians gotta make sure WE CAN SEE YOU. Because dark clothing against dark asphault, with oncoming headlights, streetlights not yet on …. makes you near impossible to see !
All I caught was a glimpse of a shawdow, it wasn’t until his shiny face was turned to me , that I was sure it was a person ! IS it really that hard to get a jacket with some flurescent strip on it ? Seeing as all the so called elected officials in our world love to make up new & usually useless laws, perhaps they could start a new one …all jackets & outter wear by law has to have a reflective strip built in . It will take awhile but eventually everyone out walking in the dark will be visible when a light hits them !

Furious, you’ve obviously never driven a motrized vehicle, they do not go from 50 kms to 0 instantly…. unless they hit a very solid object & even in that initial instant the front may have come to a complete stop the rear end is still moving forward !

By the way the crosswalk I mentioned had no flashing light sytem ! ! ! Perhaps Furious you don’t travel much, because most of them in the HRM do not have lights !

both sides should make eye contact. i give a head nod or wave my hand to pedestrians to let them know i see them. and when i have to cross a street as a pedestrian, i will NOT walk in front of some stranger in a huge metal vehicle unless i get eye contact with them. because if they aren’t looking at me, i am invisible to them.
vehicle to vehicle, eye contact if possible. like at 4 way stops.
people drive and walk around with their heads inside their own navels.

I think what with it getting dark so early, all the incident reports in the papers lately, and the lack of lighting at quite a few crosswalk hotspots, we can’t deny there is an issue here and not just a magic coincidence.
