I walked outside to collect the green bin today, and noticed a sizable pile of compostable stuff on the street. I figured that a bit must have fallen out into the road in the course of its removal. Looking down the length of the street, though, I could see that every single house had a similar pile of fly-infested compost in front of it. It is a long, spotted trail of compost stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s cooking in the sun, too.

This is disgusting. What the hell? —Crusty Old Man

  1. Bluebaggers need to be introduced to the concept of composting, as practiced by Slobodan Milosevic.

  2. shhhhhhhhhhh, don’t say it too loud,or everyone will want one. while the idea is good, the things are fucking disgusting to say the least, and summer time makes them even worse.

  3. Yeah this whole composting thing has been brilliant. They are telling people to put meat waste in it. WTF?

No wonder the fruit flies, blow flies and fire ants are taking over. The mice and rats are loving it too. We haven’t had these problems for nearly a hundred years, and now were back. (Well the fire ants are new). I think the cluster fly has benefited too. It seems they are spreading further. (Imported species are evil)

The real shame is that the rumour is that the bulk of it ends up in landfill anyway. I mean who the hell wants processed meat wastes contaminated compost?

See, where this is going ultimately is a “municipal biosolids” program where they use this “compost” to dilute sewage sludge from their brilliantly located downtown processing plant and spread it on local agricultural fields.

Human fertiliser smells awful. It is the worst kind. Compost and sludge is guaranteed to be chock full of drugs and other contaminants.

If we are going to do this it has to be smaller scale. Dig a hole in the yard, build a little shed on it and crap in the hole. Lime it regularly and move and fill as needed. It is called an outhouse. A trench for a row of them is called a latrine; useful for larger groups.

Composting is really only necessary for large operations that can control their waste streams and for farmers. I have no idea how people generate so much waste. (Or get so fat)

There are some small towns in Nova Scotia that are literally blanketed in dead fruit flies in the summer now. It is disgusting.

Oh, and the current trucking costs probably eliminate any environmental savings. That is the other issue here, they only collect garbage every two weeks now. So if you miss garbage day, you’ve got it for a month! The rats and mice love that.

I asked Waste Management for a quote on weekly garbage collection. They never returned my call. I guess they don’t need the business since the city has them set up so well.

Our governments here are so young and stupid. We need training from an experienced and successful nation.
