What a great time to be a boomer in halifax. Luxury condos and apartments popping up every where with their needs in mind. Forget about affordable housing for Gen x and y who cant afford a place in halifax with out 2 or more roomates. Why are people on assistance being evicted from there homes so boomers can have a fancy place downtown. Move away from halifax unless you plan on being retired soon because halifax does not care if your below 50 and can’t find a place to life that suits your needs. —Soon to be homeless Gen x

  1. Oh, piss off. Not all boomers are rich, not all boomers can afford housing on peninsular Halifax. This boomer lives in Hillbilly Hollow (30 minutes outside Metro) because we’re on a fixed income. Believe me, I’d love to have a posh place in downtown Halifax with hot & cold running wharf rats but I’d have to win it in a lotto.

  2. There are plenty of areas outside of the downtown core for families to live that are very affordable. Sure it may take 15 minutes to drive downtown, big deal. I would rather see continued growth and development in this city!

  3. A perfect and timely lesson for the 20-somethings. Pay yourself first. That’s right. When starting out, regardless of your income, start putting away $20-week in a high interest account. As your earnings grow increase the investment to $25-week. At some point this can be $30 – $50 per week depending on your earnings/expenses/obligations. Starting at age 25 that $20 would net you $100,000 at age 60. By increasing the investment over time to $30 per-week would provide a tax-free nest egg of almost 1 million dollars at age 60. This would be on top of any company pension you may have. The cost is one take-out meal per week. Really, how many people go grocery shopping only to arrive home and order a pizza. Yep, that pizza could end up costing you $1,000,000. You’re welcome.

  4. Thx grandpa, but that math no longer works with the off the leash beast of capitalism. $100,000 will be the cost of building a garage in 40 years.

  5. I’m slightly over 50, and have a very comfortable home.
    I wipe myself with facecloths.
I wish you luck finding a place to ‘life’.

  6. It’s not just the younger generation that is getting priced out. The older generation’s are being priced out as well. Many Boomers have had their pensions cut because of government fuckery. So stop blaming the Boomer’s for your problems. They got it just as bad as you do.

  7. Builders are building because people are buying. If or when the bubble bursts you will get them on the cheap.

  8. I forgot to add, my home is also downtown, and paid for.
Again, best of luck finding that place to ‘life’..

  9. @ willie_johnson25 my biggest tip to save money, Do not buy cable, only use the internet, get an internet based phone as they are much cheaper then regular home phones, and NEVER I repeat NEVER use a credit card.
