I’ve lived in Halifax for nine months and have been hit twice.

The first time was on Quinpool Road. A car making a left turn onto a side street was too busy looking for an opening in oncoming traffic and forgot to look for an opening in pedestrians. I was about 3/4 finished crossing the side street. The second was on Barrington Street. The car was stopped and making a turn from a side street onto Barrington. I guess he was too busy looking for openings in traffic to see the pedestrian directly in front of his car before putting his foot on the accelerator. These were all at low speeds, but getting hit by cars is not fun. —A little bruised

  1. you need to learn to watch the driver…if the driver isnt looking at you, they likely dont see you, sounds like you are as inattentive as the drivers you complain about.

  2. Drivers do have a bad habit of looking at the traffic more than at the pedestrians. Make eye contact with the driver before walking in front of them, for your own sake.

Trust no one. It was never more true than when dealing with traffic situations…

  3. I’ve lived in halifax for 25 years without being hit by a car. You need to be paying more attention to the drivers. If you see them not paying attention, don’t cross, or cross with extreme caution.

  4. Maybe you’re the bad driver?
I’ve been living here also, for over 20 years- never had an accident.
People do drive terrible here..but I’ve seen worse.

  5. I don’t believe it’s the pedestrians fault in these cases. When next to a busy street you can’t make eye contact with every car on it. It would be impossible to walk anywhere. However these accidents could be avoided if the cars looked in front of them. Drivers need to be more careful.

Also juuustwondering, I don’t think it means the pedestrian is the bad driver. Maybe you’re the bad reader.

  6. The fault lies with both the driver and the pedestrian. Pedestrians need to make eye contact and drivers need to be more pedestrian aware. Every case is different and everyone thinks they are in the right-of-way.

  7. Why not just walk behind the car instead of in front, thats what I do when I’m jogging. Especially if you can see the driver isn’t looking in your direction. Pedestrians are just as much to blame for these types of accidents as the drivers. Lets use some common sense people.
