To the family who decided to leave their mother/grandmother in an ER for nine days: I’m truly sorry that you have the task of caring for a loved one with dementia. That’s not easy financially, physically or emotionally. However, that does not even begin to excuse you for leaving your grandmother/mother to sit in an ER for nearly nine full days. During that nine days your selfish and irresponsible decision took staff, resources and time away from actual emergencies and from the patients who actually required emergency care. I felt truly sickened by your disgusting lack of regard for your own family member and your total disrespect for the work of the ER staff. —I Hope Florida Was Fun

  1. The context changes when you tell only one side of the story. Like the Ghomeshi fiasco…

  2. You’re blaming the family for someone being stuck in the ER for nine days?

I don’t think that is the real issue.

  3. did it take 9 days for someone to call social services? or did it take 9 days for social services to show up?

  4. OP, if you are a nurse or doctor and know all variables of the situation, I would have to agree with you. If not, you probably shouldn’t concern your self with the situation. Like Charlie stated, (and got quite a few dislikes for) there is always two sides to the story.

  5. I’m afraid you can expect more senior ‘dumping’ in the future by families unable to financially or emotionally deal with an elder who has health issues. This is certainly not a black and white issue and invites further debate on how to deal with our ailing population of seniors & their impact on the family members who care for them.
