When my partner and I just wanted to have a coffee (or several) and doodle, chat or daydream together, there you were—downtown, cushy seats and funny baristas. Our families provinces away sent us gift cards every holiday so that we could have these relaxing moments. Unfortunately that seems to be over. Why, when everyone else is de-gendering their washrooms, would you go and take a step backward? —No Go

Personally, I’m not a fan if genderless washrooms in public places. I am called transphobic for saying so. I believe we live on a world of choice and freedom of speech. Why does having a differing opinion mean you’re choicephobic?
Yup the special snowflake, you get to pick your gender, trans-whatever crowd is all about free speech. Until it’s an opinion they don’t like. Then its back to the safe space to blog about it on tumblr.
Why would a woman want to be in a stall next to me while I’m taking a dump? That is just fucked up.

OMG! Free speech!
i honestly don’t care either way but i can see both sides of it. Wouldn’t bother me at all if a woman was beside me when i was taking a dump lol
The argument is that it would be a man beside you taking a dump. Personally, I could care less either way, there are larger fish to fry in this world aside from who poops where. Honestly, on the whole bathroom argument, I think the risk is more from people who are not actually trans using this as an excuse to be perverts. Also, I know a few older women who are not comfortable with people who have penis’ using their restrooms. It’s an interesting debate = whose rights are more important; the people who want to be able to use a male/female washroom regardless of their current genitals or the people who want to be able to use the washroom and not have to worry about seeing a dick. The solution seems obvious if not expensive and impractical – 1 or 2 private washrooms with a single toilet.
Save a shitload (haha) of money if we only had to build 1 bathroom….but the fucken line-ups…fuck,
I prefer women’s bathrooms simply because I’ve cleaned my share of public men’s rooms and I really don’t want to have to enter the sticky rim of piss on the floor all around a toilet from men not knowing how to aim at a toilet. For me it’s purely logistics.
I don’t understand things anymore.
The issue here, I believe, is that one of the coffee shops previously had several single person washrooms with no gender designation on the door. The OB and partner liked this because it meant they didn’t have to agonize over which one is the “right” one for them to use.
The washrooms now indicate a gender, and I suspect this is most likely because a CIS-female(s) complained about sharing the washrooms with male customers. Why? I can only speculate.
My advice to the OB and friend is to continue going there and simply ignore the signs. They are one-holers so who cares. Use whichever one is free.
And for bonus points, maybe the OB can casually ask one of the staff why the changes were made and report back to us. It would be interesting to know their rationale.
…So use the one that matches the gender you identify with? Unless it’s both, then just pick the cleaner one. Personally IDGAF, women shitting doesn’t sound/smell any better than men crapping it out.
