This morning I was at a downtown crosswalk. My light was clearly red.

I looked both ways, and there weren’t any cars in either direction as far as the eye could see (3 blocks or more).

I did what many people would do and I crossed on the red light.

As it turned out there was an undercover police officer stationed at that corner, specifically to target pedestrian violations.

Why all the focus and resources to crackdown on pedestrians lately?

I won’t believe that it’s related to all the crosswalk injuries, because almost 100% of those are driver errors when the pedestrian has the right of way.

Insurance industry statistics were recently released that showed Halifax had the worst motor vehicle accident rate in Canada.

86th out of 86.

Why on earth would the HRP be so focussed on punishing pedestrians?

It’s almost like they want to discourage walking. —Glenn

  1. BULLSHIT BITCH.

If they have undercover police stationed at intersections, I will publically piss in my own mouth… WTF?! HRPD are ass hats at the best of times but to waste my money policing pedestrians using UCs? No one is that stupid; well, outside of those who believe this bitch…

  2. You broke the law. You got caught. You were reprimanded. You bitched. Notice how this is all about YOU.

  3. You answered your own question OB, as to why there are police that are concerned with pedestrians being struck. YOU are the reason OB, that the police are cracking down on jaywalking. They already have a task force and public policy to deal with motorists as well. It is irresponsible of you to have crossed on the red, regardless of traffic considerations at your microcosm of space and time. You knew better and got busted. Deal with your actions and use it as a learning experience. Be an example for others and promote crosswalk safety by following the laws and rules designed to PROTECT the population from their own stupidity.

  4. You broke the law. And as far as drivers being responsible for the stupidity of pedestrians? I don’t think so. Drivers are responsible for their own stupidity. Pedestrians responsible for themselves. You can teach a dog to cross the street properly but you can’t teach a human. Something’s not right here.

  5. Next time you cross at a red light, do a Riverdance from one curb to the next. It’ll make the subsequent bitch a lot more interesting.

  6. @ Anna McGargoyle…pedestrians are also able to be charged with obstructing the flow of traffic. Its up to pedestrians to clear the path of traffic as quickly as possible while being safe. something that i dont see much of.

  7. ? what the hell is with all the hostility?

I don’t read anywhere where the law was broken…
No cars = no impeding traffic in any way.
You can’t impede what isn’t there.

    idiots

  8. To the drivers who hate pededtrians: ever notice how pedestrians cross the street millions of times per month, yet the obsruction you experience isnt all the time? Thats because youre seeing a small minority of pedestrians being careless and you are feeling that we all do it, your feelings are wrong.

  9. “100% of those are driver errors when the pedestrian has the right of way.”
    Citation needed :3

  10. Police aren’t targeting pedestrians, they’re targeting pedestrians that don’t follow the law.

  11. Halifax has some of the WORST pedestrians. I don’t think I’d chalk even half of the incidents up to driver errors. HRM pedestrians in any major cities learn real, real quick. They can’t get away with the same garbage in Toronto or Montreal.

  12. Dear Charlie Brown,

“If they have undercover police stationed at intersections, I will publically piss in my own mouth… WTF?!”

They’re called plain clothes officers. Pissing in the OB’s mouth will be sufficient 🙂

  13. Same thing happens to me when I’m driving and run red lights when there are no cars around….weird
