Damn you, coffee, damn you! I’ve tried many times to like you, but why when you’re only bearable when in 1:3 ratio with milk and sugar? Yet we live in a world of coffee drinkers, and because of your domination, coffee, I’ve been at many a meeting where you’re the only hot drink available because “everyone” drinks you. Because of you, people look at me like a deviant when I ask for tea. Because of you, there’s a nasty taste in all my travel mugs because my roomies fill them with you and leave it for hours. Worst is that as much as I hate you, we could never live without you because all of the java junkies who keep the world running would let civilization fall down about our ears. We ain’t friends, Joe. —Ticked-Off TIF (Tea In First)

  1. I think that the problem is that cafes don’t seem to want to put the same attention into tea as they do coffee. I drink almost exclusively coffee, but there’s the odd time I want tea, it’s lacking. I mean, I don’t like Orange Pekoe all that much. If they do have a variety, it’s a pretty poor variety. Cargo and James used to be a great place to go, but that’s closed down it would seem.

  2. Make it from home, like the rest of us tea snobs do.

And learn to hide your (non-plastic plz)travel mugs, goddamn.

  3. Agreed 100 percent OP. Tea is awesome. Nothing like tea to start the day and get rid of the hangover. I don’t know how people can drink coffee right after waking up. I’d puke.

  4. I used to hate coffee until a few early mornings at work got me drinking the stuff in the break room…and now I actually *like* it…needs lots of splenda though.

I actually find that starbucks has the best teas around. I’m addicted to their passion tea — hot or cold. I used to HATE tea with a passion [heh], but after trying some of their teas I really enjoy it. I usually get the passion tea without the classic syrup (iced or hot) and add some splenda. Sometimes for a treat I get the lemonaid with it. It’s delightful.

Also: Tim hortons doesn’t have a terrible selection of teas and they’re tastier than their coffee (which is nothing but swill, blech). Not exactly the same as brewing your own loose tea and not as good as starbucks, but decent for a cheap cup of tea 🙂

  5. There’s a fortune in tax revenue to be made from the world’s addiction to caffeine.

The “can’t imagine starting my day wthout a cup!” crowd needs to pony up and start paying their share.

Within a few years we will have a “sin” tax on caffeine, the same as we do for a glass of red wine and the occasional cigar…I actively support it now, and suggest you do the same.

    Think of the children…

  6. The can of full throttle beside my keyboard says you’re right, Frosty. Heh.

    So. Tired.

I don’t drink caffeine on a regular basis though, so unlike before when energy drinks did jack shit for me, I get actual energy from this shit.

Full Throttle is like liquid orgasm *mmm*

  7. Now there’s a market that is reaping obscene profits…although Red Bull made the billions first, now it’s flooded.

Look at the price of those “energy” drinks! Especially in rip-off Canada, it’s a scandal.

Why shouldn’t the gov’t be reaping some of this pork, so they can lower MY taxes? If people are gullible enough to pay 3-5 bucks for 4 cents worth of caffeine, then, by the gods, they can pay half that to we the people!

Chewing coca leaves or qat has a similar effect, but they don’t have a billion-dollar industry complete with lobbiests and teams of lawyers behind them like big coffee does…

In fact, coca leaves are “badddd”, and even qat is about to be banned ( or already is) by culturally ignorant western “lawmakers”…

  8. as a coffee drinker, i feel for you. i like to have a good cuppa tea every so often. but you will never find one at a tims place, or even board meetings. make your own, take in a thermos o.p., easier that way, and you enjoy it more.

  9. Not sure how much more clear can make it, DF…

Those of us that enjoy a occasional glass of wine or the odd cigar have been subsidizing you with the so-called “sin tax”.

Why is the same not done with caffeine? Seems like not only a good oppurtunity to raise revenue from your ‘addiction”, the way you do mine…but it makes life just a bit more “fair”, wouldn’t you say?

  10. Because Frosty, unless you drink about 18 cups of coffee, you’re not going to get intoxicated on coffee. Booze, yes, along with that, there’s a likelihood that you may drink and drive, or worse, become an alcoholic. Cigarettes are highly addictive (far more so than caffeine) and contain deadly substances that put significant strain on our heath care system. When was the last time you heard of someone who was put in hospital for any type of cancer caused by caffeine?

So, that said, there’s no need, because the system isn’t strained by people consuming caffeine. If caffeine put people in the hospital like booze and nicotine did, I’d endorse it. Since that doesn’t happen, well, there ya go. No need for a sin tax.

Do you think about the stuff you say, or do you just let it out, like verbal diarrhea?

  11. I’m happy to educate you a bit here, Dr Fever, because you seem quite uninformed about what a “sin” tax is, and why it’s imposed.

It matters not if achohol is “intoxicating”, and that a small percentage of people may choose to “drink and drive”, lol – did you think that the billions of dollars raised from booze revenues, goes to what…the victims? Building more prisons? Rehab?

The “sin tax” on alcohol is not imposed to encourage folks to quit drinking. Especially not in a province that owns the liqour store. And in fact, by alowing beer companies to sponsor everything from boat regattas to outdoor concerts, the gov’t is implicit in encouraging alchohol consumption. A “sin tax” is not some altruistic attempt to improve society Dr Fever…it’s a way of profiteering from our weaknesses…

How about the billions raised from gambling in most Canadian provinces…do you think THAT money is used to pay for funerals for suicides when someone loses their house? Gov’t-provided counselling for gambling addicts? Are the slot machines “intoxicating as well, DR Fever, or do you want to rethink that gaping flaw in your arguement, lol??

You seem to have this bizarre idea that taxes on pleasurable “vices” i.e. smoking, drinking, gambling and so on is some sort of zero sum game, whereby the tax is necessary to offset the costs to society…where did you come up with that? A church pamphlet, lol?

Those taxes are there to raise revenue plain and simple.

Your assertion that tobacco is “far more addictive than caffeine” is also highly debatable…although typical of your habit of often stating your OPINION as fact, the one thing you DO excel at…

  12. “”If caffeine put people in the hospital like booze and nicotine did, I’d endorse it. Since that doesn’t happen, well, there ya go.””

    No, there YOU go:

–Caffeine overdoses can lead to headaches, jitteriness, irritability, difficulties in concentration, and mood swings which drain productivity from business and industry. In addition, caffeine consumption has been linked to heart disease, pancreas and bladder cancer, hypoglycemia and central nervous system disorders. Caffeine intoxication can produce mood swings and insomnia, increased muscle tension, impairs digestion and nutrition, restricts blood circulation to the brain, raise blood pressure and accelerate the heart rate. — caffeineawareness.org

    And:

–One study found that elderly postmenopausal women who consumed more than 300 mg per day of caffeine lost more bone in the spine than women who consumed less than 300 mg per day.– medicinenet.com

    Don’t forget:

–In a study done by the National Institute of Mental Health, 8- to 13-year-olds who regularly consumed high doses of caffeine were judged to be more restless by teachers, and one-third were hyperactive enough to meet the criteria for attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD). A Stanford study of fifth- and sixth-graders deprived of daily caffeine reported having symptoms including trouble thinking clearly, not feeling energetic, and getting angry — Prevention magazine.

Bone loss, decreased productivity, ADHD…the list goes on.

So Dr Fever, maybe before coming on here with one of your famous dismissive comments like ” do you think…or is it just verbal diarrhea…” perhaps YOU could actually do a little reading YOURSELF, and maybe tend to your own arse wiping first?

    😉

  13. I’m not getting sucked into Frosty and Fever bitch-slap-fest…..

I’d just recommend a light roast for the OP so that the flavor is mellow and not quite so intense. use to be my preference when I drank coffee…

though I’ve since given it up.
even during roll up the rim season.
    it can be done!

  14. I’m the same with coffee. It’s friggin nasty. I try a sip every now and then because it would make my life much easier to just like coffee because it’s everywhere! I can’t stand tea either. I’ve tried many different kinds but I just hate them all. I loove cappacinos though :D. Makes me look like a tool though…”I’m going on a coffee run, want one” “No..I only drink cappacino”. I loove energy drinks though as well. The sugar free kinds though. I haven’t had one for a while though because they mess with my mind and if I have one at 8am, I still won’t be able to sleep when I go to bed around 11p-12a. I guess I’m one of those caffeine sensitive losers :(.
Oh and beer is another thing I just can’t like. Even the ones with a citrus twist or whatever….so grosss. I’ll stick to my Mike’s light-hard coolers and vodka mixed drinks ;D haha.

  15. Unfortunatly I’m stuck with Mike’s light hard because they seem to be the only ones with less sugar. Sugar makes me hungover and just generally makes me feel awful, even if there isn’t alcohol along with it.
