Why oh why oh why do I get cold sores!!! I hate them….they’re ugly and they really hurt in this cold ass weather. I’m and adult in a professional work place and I look awful!! I’ve had 5 this winter season…I take prescription medication as well as use abreva every 45 minutes (washing my hands thoroughly) yet still they just keep coming back this winter!!!.
I want to crawl under a rock and come back when it’s summer.

a friend of mine noticed a reduction from 12+ cold sores in a year down to 2 when she quit taking the pill. Get off the roller-coaster (if you’re on it) and focus on overall vitality/ strong immune system to reduce the number of outbreaks you get each year. Washing your hands won’t help you but it might help others in avoiding your disease. Thank you for washing your hands.
I use to get cold sores all of the time, then I read if you put ice on it before it developes (When it’s in its tingley beginning stage) it wont actuallly develop. I have done this for the last 7 years, and the only time I got a coldsore was when I failed to use ice.
Cold sores aren’t a disease, You can’t catch cold sores. i used to get 8 on my face when I was a kid but now I will maybe get one or two in a year. My Dad gets them too but nobody else in my family ever has. They all have allergies so I just see it as my form of an allergy.
@ gtg:
Cold sores, or “Oral Herpes” are caused by the virus ‘herpes simplex 1’ or HSV-1, a cousin to the virus that causes genital herpes. They are common, quite contagious and are not caused by allergies. You can definitely catch cold sores!
Your father really should have told you this when you were a child. I hope he knows. Maybe you should tell him, just in case.

It’s not an allergy. It’s the herpes virus. It’s quite contagious. MOST people have it. (Some catch it from their mothers.) There is no cure because the virus live in your nervous system. We can’t kill it without leaving you paralyzed so we trick it with antiviral drugs instead and reduce the severity of symptoms.
Don’t kiss anybody when you’ve got a cold sore. Don’t kiss anybody who has a cold sore.
…no wonder it’s such a popular disease, eh?
(missed your post geekchick) well said!
Use a condom.
Geekchick…maybe her father also told her she was the best french kisser in grade 5 too?
Is that what you’re implying?
Isn’t it true though that this oral herpes can not spread to genitals? Or was MY dad lying too?
Yup…kissing someone with a coldsore…that’s right up there on my list of things to do! Pucker up!
frosty, YES the virus jumps from lips to genitals. See why it’s so common? LOL
BMF: It’s more difficult to get Oral Herpes on genitals, and vise-versa, but not impossible.
OP: if the drugs aren’t working to prevent the cold sores, you may need to look at the cause of the outbreaks instead. Things like stress, cold temperatures and a poor immune system can cause the virus to reactivate more frequently. As well, physical trauma to the nerve cluster where the virus goes dormant can cause outbreaks as well. Try and identify the trigger(s) for your outbreaks and maybe you can avoid/minimize them.
Ive never had a cold sore, but the look and sound very painful.
I cant believe someone thinks that they are an allergy….
You lot make up your mind, would ya?
Inquiring minds want t’ know…
Yes, it can cosmo. They are different, but related, viruses. HSV-1 (oral) is best adapted for the oral environment but can infect the genitals and HSV-2 (genital) is best adapted for the genital environment. Either virus can infect the other site, although with less efficiency.

lol —> gtg you Got To Go to the fucking doctor to get your herpes checked out fool.
fuck i’m 50 and i still get acne it’s effing embarassing as people think it’s like aid sores or somnething!
baD mR fRosTy: With something so important you might be better advised to question your family doctor than rely on information posted by the LTWWB ‘doctors’!
Sound advice Oceanlady 🙂
Eww…..Herpes!
Herpes is one of the best reasons I can think of for NOT indulging in casual sex.
I’m telling you folks, try eating yogurt. Haha. I’ve had co-workers with these and they look freakin scary.
http://www.health911.com/remedies/rem_cold…
Based on the severity, maybe the the cause of the OP’s cold sores is HSV-2 instead of HSV-1. HSV-2 may not respond to abreva in the same way. Perhaps an acyclovir drug would be more effective (like zovirax).
Grace: What’s the basis for yogurt providing protection from cold sores? Yogurt wouldn’t protect you from a virus infection in the same way it protects you from bacterial infections.
As well, the Lysine supplement research referenced is 30 years old and based on about 2 studies. The only recent lysine inhibition of herpes infections comes from veterinary medicine which give conflicting results. That probably explains why lysine is not a standard treatment for Cold Sores.
j/k Miles. There is no known cure for these things. Otherwise people wouldn’t be bitching about them in the 21 century. I do however think, there could be a correlation with an abundance of yeast. Check out Kay’s comment at the very top. Now she’s not stating that her friend is free of sores, just that there a fewer outbreaks. When a women is on the pill her body becomes suspectable to yeast infections. This is a fact. In essence, her body becomes over abundant in yeast production. Now of course this only applies to women, but there are many other ways of producing too much yeast in your body. I personally, have never read any in depth articles about cold sores, but I have read and witnessed people with abnormal production of yeast. It is not a pretty picture. Read up on Candida Albicans, it makes for an interesting read.
To answer one of your previous questions about my personal supplements I take. I actually don’t take anything…but I do know my foods.
MrFrosty: Um, ew. No, that wasn’t what I was implying. I just meant that as an adult with coldsores, he should have known what causes them, (at least that’s my opinion) and provided his child with the necessary information. Information like the fact that the virus is contagious! And therefore maybe the kid should avoid things like sharing a bottle of water with his buddy when there’s a big ol’ sore on the way…
Geekchick, your ew tells me you don’t like french-kissing? Is there any other way?
Oh, never mind:)
Don’t be too hard on the parents. They just didn’t know. They still don’t know!
I think the off-the-pill thing worked for my friend because of the roller coaster of unnatural hormone manipulation stressing the immune system the same way every month. She was just as likely to have a sore during her period as she was two days after a fight with her parents and god forbid she catch the flu or *gasp* get pregnant.
I wonder if when you get pregnant with herpes these days if your doctor tells you how to avoid passing it on to your kids? I’ve heard cesarean section is required for ladies outbreaking during labour…. spooky.
I just figure I wouldn’t like french kissing my dad.
I’ve heard of people who went down on someone with genital herpes and ended up getting it on their face. In one case I heard they had multiple sores all over their face around their mouth.
I’ve also heard of someone who apparently transmitted oral herpes to their genitals when they touched their face than touched their penis. I’m not really so sure about that one, but anything’s probably possible *shrug*
Pretty Kitty… LMAO
Ewwwwwwweeeee all the way around.
used to get them all of the time, got divorced and funny they disappeared about the same time she did.
get rid of your stress it i believe will bring on attacks, lol
kissing too many toads, looking for prince fucking charming will give you them. happy herpes to you, don’t fucking pass on to me.
You CAN transmit oral cold sores to the genitals. One of my best friends found this out the hard way; boyfriend goes down on her, he had a small cold sore on his upper lip, and voila. Her initial infection had her in the hospital for over 2 weeks…the sores were external AND internal in her girly bits, as well as in her mouth and down her throat. She believed (as another commenter did) that the cold sore on her boyfriend’s lip would not affect her “down there”. Quite a lesson to be learned! o_O
Question is if you’re heading south and see sores of any kind/size/shape, what would possess you to continue? You see a sore and decide to taste it? Heck, I’d be running in the other direction…ewwww!!!!
I used to get them from wearing lipstick, same with my Mother. So, I don’t wear it anymore (since Jr. High) Now, I only get them when I’m super stressed!
P.S. Some people need to go back to Health class.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph!! LTWWB is infested with herpe ridden regulars!!
Forget forming that posse we talked about before! Gross…
About 70-80% of people in Canada have HSV-1. Not everyone who is infected gets cold sores. Chances are YOU have it too Never Wrong 🙂
Jesus, Mary and Joseph probably had them too!! That Mary’s fooling no one.
I was thinking that too Never Wrong… then Miles has to come out with percentages and accusations…
I guess we’re the scant few “lucky ones” eh?
Never had a cold sore, flu, migrane, not even a headache that wasn’t self-inflicted with a 40 and 36 hours to kill…..
I have had Strep eight times though… that must be my kryptonite.
Herpes is like good luggage! You keep that shit for life!!
I get tested every year for any and all STDs/STIs and I’ve never had anything. I make sure to pop on that jimmy hat and mind my Ps and Qs (my Ps especially!!).
