We need to start a letter writting campaign, and let these ministers know, we don’t want them exploiting sable island for anything. The very fact that no one is allowed there is why its still preserved. The argument of turning it into a park to protect it is absolutely absurd, its already protected by the very fact that no one can go there without the explicit permission of the canada coast guard. I can understand making it a wildlife preserve to accord it protection from people who might want to exploit the island for other things, but making it a wildlife preserve would have to mean no one is allowed there except scientists/meterologists etc… which is exactly who is allowed there now. The government is clearly not doing this for the benefit of anyone.
Something tells me someone has their fingers in the pie for the money they’re going to be making of off the exploitation of this precious place if they do allow tourism. I can’t say anything that someone else hasn’t already said, but this makes me very very angry!

I don’t think turning it into a park means that they have to let people go there, I think it just means it is protected in ways that a regular piece of land is not.
A letter writing campaign? What, is this 1842? This country is so fucking apathetic. If you are pissed about something, protest. For Fuck Sakes!
I am sure there are plenty of entrepreneurs ready to start up pony-rides on the island, sand-tobogganing, and throw in some dune buggies. We should not be touching Sable at all.
“Bitch, Please!” should have added on “Please contact your local Tamil group for tips on how to protest.”
The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Oh, I was wrong, they do seem to be planning to allow tourism. That is not awesome.
as do 99.999 % of all government people.
I say, let the pony rides begin !
I would like to be able to go seal clubing on the beaches .
(maybe they could sell seal skin gloves, moccasines & other wonderful things, in the gift shop(s). (like those adorable little sealskin key chains we used to see as kid’s)
I want to hang out on the beach & drink too much rum.
The hotels could have bonfire nights.
THen there’s whale watching, sail boating around the island, dive tours …you know that place is a ship graveyard.
The possibilities are enormous !
So who do we start letter writing, to get them fast tracking developement at this unique tourist site ????
hmm free range horse meat yummy:)
Sell seal skin gloves
sell seal skin gloves
sell seal skin gloves
sell seal skin gloves
sell seal skin gloves
Just wanted to see if I could do it fast.
wow! I didn’t even know it was there.
why exactly do you care so much about something you’ve never been to?
I’ve been there !
It’s been a long time, but I would pay to go visit the place, it is a remote speck in the ocean.
I’ve even gone diving there & it sure isn’t for beginners, the current was…noticeable.
mmm Beach girls, Bar-B-Q ,big bonfire & lot’s of tasty beverages ~:)
Money raised could be used to allow for better feed, for the ponies in the winter.
If it’s barren and desolate, perhaps we could make a sanctuary for the bums from SGR -only drawback is they’d be asking each other for change, for a change
yea you could call at retreat/nature reserve for stressed out panhandlers; you think it’s easy being a bum,in this economy:)
From what I understand, designating it as a national park would allow for federal funding to be transferred to the island, therefore allowing for better protection. I’m unsure as to the aspect of tourism, but given it’s protected nature, they would most likely be limited to fly-overs of the island, which would be a minimal impact, considering that these tours would be expensive and limited to either the rich or only the most dedicated eco-tourist.
