Ok..is it just me or does this stink.
Halifax City Police arrest one of thier own for Extortion and he gets to go home WITH PAY over the Holidays.
Crime is Crime, if anybody eles did it they would not be going home with pay….money that my taxes are use to pay this guy.
Fair is Fair…..If you do the crime do the time…Cop or not.

So everybody who is arrested or charged are fired by their employers? I don’t think so.
He is Innocent until proven Guilty, i agree wholeheartly.
BUT , There are jobs he could be doing to earn his pay, I can imagine that there is more then one honest cop who would like to be home at Christmas but will be on the Streets.
In the Military if your charged with a crime you still work, just in a different position.

The cops sometimes treat us citizens like we are guilty until proven innocent. My husband was out walking our dog the other night and had him on a gentle leader so he was whining and crying alot about it. We have to use it otherwise he will lunge at other people and dogs for no reason (he’s not vicious he just wants to play but they don’t know that). Anyways, we are responsible owners and when someone in the neighbourhood called to say that he was beating the dog, the cops showed up and gave him major attitude. We are not from that neighbourhood, by the way…we were just visiting so nobody knew us there.
He put the run on them since the police have no right to stop people on the street, make unproven accussations and continue to harrasse. They should definitely remember that the shoe could be on the other foot some day soon for them and someone could lie about something they did, just to get them in trouble. Why would someone SAY they saw him beating the dog, when he wasn’t? Maybe they thought he was when they heard the dog whining (he’s very loud when he complains) and decided to ensure that the person got stopped since the police won’t come unless it’s a serious complaint. Anyways, it doesn’t matter, I can only guess why…the bottom line is that the police should be professional and treat a person as innocent until proven guilty.
He didn’t talk to them because the lady cop was ignorant to him and if she asked a few questions, she would have found out he just spent $5,000 for a life saving operation for the dog. People who beat their dogs, don’t typically sacrifice their financial well being to save them. Also, we could have given her the name of a professional trainer we have hired to help us with his new behaviorial problem. Our trainer is now meeting out at an Industrial Park on the weekend because our dog is so loud when he is not getting his way, our trainer is afraid his neighbours will call the police. Our dog also screams like he is being beaten to death when he is scratching his ear because his nails scrape the inside and he keeps scratching (probably not putting two and two together) as he howls like he is being kicked. Do I have to worry about the police hauling me out of my house and treating me like a dog beater if I don’t make it to him in time to scratch his ear for him (that’s what we do)? Now, after the other night, I guess I do.
James Butlers gonna be getting a visit shortly and that idiot who lied is either going to get charged with mischief or I’ll take her on a ride through the court system (we have money, by the way, so we don’t mind kicking it to her in court). You accuse either of us of beating our dog and we will treat you like you have accused us of beating our child. It was reported to animal services, by the way so we will be definitely taking action. It’s too bad the cop who needs to work on her people skills doesn’t follow one of the most important rules: INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY No doubt many of you have been mistreated by the police, when you were innocent and it makes it hard to treat them with the same respect. I for one, am no longer a supporter of our force.

If you are a cop you should not ever put yourself in a position to even be SUSPECTED of something illegal…..I think he should just be fired. If he did something serious enough to be suspended and not allowed at the office, I don’t want to have to rely on that guy to help me out in the future…..
If you have an accounting job and you are SUSPECTED of something you are FIRED, not sent home with pay….
Maybe the department should screen the applicants better….I’m pretty sure all you have to be is “in shape” and willing to use your uniform to get things for free, your lights to get through anything you don’t feel like waiting for and a cocky attitude…. BAM!! You’re in!

Far to many people in HRM complain about how things are done here because it always costs us (taxpayers) money, but nobody is willing to even take things serious.

I am not a cop, do not KNOW any cops nor do I want to BE a cop. But what pisses me off is the fact that yes there are bad cops who abuse authority. There are bad teachers, bad nurses, bad truck drivers etc etc.
Halifax police officer accused of extorting $5K
The Halifax police constable charged Sunday with extorting money from a man last week is accused of receiving $5,100, according to court documents obtained by CBC News.
The prosecution documents claim that Const. Jeffrey Buchanan, 29, demanded the money from Shawn Banfield, who is scheduled to be in provincial court Wednesday to face other charges.
The allegation details are in documents that are publicly available at the courthouse. They have yet to be proven.
The extortion is alleged to have happened in Halifax on Thursday, Dec. 10.
Buchanan was arrested Saturday at 2:30 a.m. while on duty and charged early Sunday. He is not in custody but has been suspended with pay.
He is scheduled to be in court on Jan. 26 to face charges of extortion and breach of trust.
Banfield is due in court Wednesday to face charges of assault and resisting and obstructing a police officer, dating to Dec. 9 and 10.
On Sunday, Halifax deputy police chief Chris McNeil said a “complex” investigation was conducted by the integrated Halifax Regional Police and RCMP team.
“Some of the witnesses were not necessarily forthcoming and co-operative,” he said. “This is not a complainant who came forward to say ‘I was extorted.’
“This is circumstances where police uncovered criminal activity and had to go out and seek out these people and not all of them were co-operative.”
On a side note, why are there always so many cops at the Tim Hortons on Barrington near the Superstore? Is there a drug bust at Timmies? Is there a crime there?
I know one person can give a bad impression for the rest, but honest and just behaviour, attitude and actions are inherent with the job, or we’d like to think that. There are bad apples with any group of people. Unfortunately, I dated a cop and saw how little this person and partner worked in the run of a day, and it didn’t impress me. I’m talking about going for runs, going to the gym or going swimming while technically on their lunch break, only to claim a late lunch break to leave home an hour early. To me that isn’t “working” honestly for the +30 dollars an hour. In a way that is in the longterm, stealing wages not so far from stealing $5000.

You are right stealing a few hours of wages does add up over time, and it is still stealing.
I think that HRM needs to look at how the people that get payed out of taxpayers money handel themselfs on the job, thats not just cops thats everyone that gets payed out of OUR TAXES. Trouble is they (city employees) are protected by a union and nobody is willing to make them do thier jobs. I have been told by City employees “Who cares its Tax dollars.

This cop was one of the officers involved in the tasering incident not to long ago where the man died. He was one of the police officers who held the man down while he was being tasered.
