No three sheet in the 50 odd bands you listed as the “talk of the town” this year? REALLY coast, what town are you living in…cause I was born and bred in this magical town where three sheet has been holden down a solid weekly gig, playing the seahorse and paragon regularly, having an EPIC CD release in the dinning room of E&C, making it to the finals in the battel of the bands for Warped tour, head lining a show at Music Nova Scotia week, set to play the paragon with slow coaster and Jimmy Swift on New Years, and causing MORE FUCKING BUZZ in ONE YEAR then I’ve ever seen. This magical place coast? called HALIFAX. Hard to think you just forgot about them coast, seeing how they are listed in your adds every week for one show or another, putting in a real effort to entertain Halifax, so much so that Mayor Peter Kelly himself phoned up and asked them to play the tree lighting ceremony tonight. As much as I would like to think Peter Kelly is more hip then the coast, I’d rather just say -Coast, play nice to three sheet and their “drum machine”, their fans are starting to notice.

  1. Hey, ask the Coast what they do when a local has music in THEIR OWN top ten for over two years. Sweet Fuck all. You expect too much from the biz, Carolyn.

  2. There’s just no accounting for taste.

There’s polling, though, OP. Maybe you can get The Coast to do that and see if your horse comes out in front.

  3. At first, I thought that my fiancee wrote this, then I realised that she has taste in music and hates indie rock bands for this exact reason… They all think they’re talented, and the greatest thing to happen to music since Sloan.

  4. What’s a three sheet, some sort of sail?

Dr Fever I bet your fiancee knows how to capitalize and use punctuation marks.

  5. Fever, I wonder how your fiancee thinks ANY of her favourite bands got started? It’s not like you’re signed and then viola! you’re suddenly talented! It sorta works the other way around, ya know?

  6. kay, I have close friends who work in the Halifax music scene, and they’re talented. Know what, half the bands that I see in places like the Seahorse and Gus’ Pub are just a group of guys (sorry, usually a bunch of guys, or a bunch of guys and one token hipster girl) who were trained to keep a beat, play a guitar and sing. Training and talent are two different things. Secondly, this whole bitch reeks of self entitlement. We play regularly at X location… we’re entitled to be called the best in Halifax! No, that just means that you entertain a bunch of drunks night after night. When they produce an album I’ve actually heard of, I’ll pay attention.

  7. This is beginning to bleed into that other bitch… do you know what it takes to write a song? Do you know how much more it takes to communicate that song to even trained musicians? And recording it… OMG. It’s about THE SONG. Fever, maybe you should start with the indies who actually produce their music and formally release it beyond Gus’s Pub. In fact, you may even want to start with the Coast’s top ten or even Music Nova Scotia’s top ten. Listen now and you may be “in” on the ground floor of tomorrow’s new sound.

  8. Isn’t she married to Gary Beals, or something?

I’ll betcha my dad knows a fuck of a lot more about the music industry as a whole, including the NS music scene, and would probably agree that kay’s likely talking out of her ass most of the time. I should ask him sometime.

Dude’s got respect in the industry, yo.

  9. Just to clarify, Three Sheet is not an indie rock band, they’re hip hop, and the bitch was obviously not written by anyone in the band, but just an over-zealous and semi-literate fan. They’re actually a pretty talented and fun group, with a wicked cool beatboxer and hot lead singer, and really not a bunch of self-entitled assholes at all. Worth checking out, if you’re into that sort of thing….

  10. Three Sheet is tight … when I saw them at Gus’ Pub a couple years ago Joel Plaskett himself was there checking them out (I know, blah blah, Joel sucks, etc., whatever go fuck yourselves). They certainly have accomplished more in terms of awards and recognition than many of the bands making the rounds these days as Carolyn points out. I was actually really disappointed with the Coast cover as none of my favourite acts were featured, but, eh, what can you do. They can’t support everyone.

  11. Last I heard “indie” means unsigned. “Indie” does NOT indicate genre. Unless they’re signed (they wouldn’t be playing Gus’) they’re “indie”

I don’t know who Gary Beals is but I know how my husband makes money in the music biz. Is that okay with you, Kitty? Please DO ask your Dad about what it takes to write a song, record and formally release it… assuming he’s a composer and not a wanna-be guitar hero… Unless his initials are MRH, then don’t bother. That guy doesn’t know his asshole from his drumstick and lives in a fantasy world that left metronomes packed in a beer box 20 years ago.

  12. Haha, you guys really are bitches!(goodonya). Just making a point about not alot of the new best music being in the coast. I wanna see the coast doing a better job… Classified’s 11th album coming out, when I don’t think he has even played a show this year in Halifax, isn’t new and exciting local news…Like where was Gypsophila? They won best jazz album this year…and Of course I’m a die hard three sheet fan, thats why I wrote about them. Dummies.

  13. Gypsophilia were definitely included in the top local music issue. http://www.thecoast.ca/halifax/talkof-the-…

As for Three Sheet, no, they weren’t selected by one of our 10 critics as a top album (this time), but that doesn’t mean we don’t recognize their achievements, which is why we’ve written about them several times over the last year, and I expect that won’t be the last time you see them in the paper.

As for the musicians that are actually on the cover, we had a list of 30 bands, whose albums were chosen as the best. As a visual rule of thumb (it’s also impossible for a photographer to manage many more people), we never put more than about 4-5 people on the cover, but this was a special circumstance. So we started going down the list (in no order) contacting bands, expecting that people were busy, not interested, etc. and that we wouldn’t get too many people, but wow, we were wrong! Everyone enthusiastically RSVPed right away, and then, sadly, we had to stop contacting people because the photoshoot would have taken all night, the photographer would have killed me, and looked terrible with so many people. So yeah, some bands who had great albums and who made the list didn’t get on the cover but it was definitely not a biased decision or deliberate omission.

  14. “”When they produce an album I’ve actually heard of, I’ll pay attention. “‘

You had me right up until this odd statement…this is the whole problem, too many folks confuse “good” with “popular”…and if you think about it, that’s exactly what you’re saying here.

“”and would probably agree that kay’s likely talking out of her ass most of the time. I should ask him sometime.””

yeah, you do that. Because if he knows half what you think he does, he’ll totally agree with these statements, whether they come from a sphincter or not, they ring true to me, but what do I know, lol…

“”do you know what it takes to write a song? Do you know how much more it takes to communicate that song to even trained musicians? And recording it (is a challenge as well)?””

Abso-fucking- lutley..especially a “real” recording that is mixed, mastered and ready for airplay…not just a DAT that your GF records “live” at the Seahorse…

“”It’s not like you’re signed and then viola! you’re suddenly talented!””

Correct, many bands are signed for their “potential” to sell, and develop their chops as they go…look at Rush for example

“”Last I heard “indie” means unsigned. “Indie” does NOT indicate genre.”‘

You’re right…although there are some folks that consider any music that is raw, unrehearsed sounding, out of tune…but still somehow has “appeal” as “indie”, lol

And I still say Halifax’s “Remedy” should have won this contest/award/grammy/ecma or whatever the hell you’re talking about!

  15. Three sheet nominated for best hip hop single of the year at the ECMAs!

You know what reeks of self intitlement Dr. Fever, the fact that you think shit has to be served to you, personally, on a silver platter to deserve recognition in a local paper. You suck.

Oh yeah…and their main MC IS signed with an American record label…
