Yay! We were so blessed to have the royal family visit Canada for about two weeks!!
…Too bad that despite the current economy crisis, Canada had to fork out 2.57 million dollars for their stay:

  1. My quick calculations on cost to Canadians…at 37 million Canadians, it cost each one of us $.07
for them to visit. So your bitching about the seven cents it cost you from your taxes !!!
I’ll bet the 2 BIllion+ the failed long Gun Registry cost us tax payers, must keep you up nights. When (or is it IF) you think of how much of your tax dollars went toward that ! (just for you my calculator says over $60 dollars from each & every Canadian) if you use 37 million Canadians as your base….although we all know every Canadian isn’t a tax payer 😉

  2. That’s not really the point, I don’t want to pay ANYTHING for them to vacation here, nobody fucking pays for my holidays. That’s a shitload of money to come here and lay a fucking wreath and some photo-ops. I’m sure the royals can afford to pay their own way.

  3. Thank-you for comparing this to another famous waste of tax-payers’ money. Because that’s what it is.
If I have to pay 7 cents every time another stupid waste of money comes along, I’m not going to dismiss it just because its ‘only’ 7 cents.
I’m sure we could find something better to spend $2.57 million on.

  4. Well, technically, $630,000 went to pay staff, so we got some taxes back since we were probably paying Canadians. A Canadian company runs the government website, sooo that went to Canadians too. Although here’s the website ( http://www.visiteroyale-royalvisit.gc.ca/i… ), and I’m wondering why it cost $40,000… maybe for the photographer? …

  5. Ocean Lady, I agree.
Plus the spending of money was mostly to Canadians. So having tax dollars pay ourselves for the extra work was IMO worth it. Our Parlimentary system is based on the British example. We are members of the Common wealth..& like it or not she is Canada’s Queen…I know she is also the Queen of Great Britian, & many other common wealth countries, For the stability we get from that…the cost is small.

  6. YEAH,AND NOW THE OLD BAG HERSELF IS COMING TO,JESUS H. CHRIST,GIVE US A FUCKING BREAK WITH THESE INBRED ASSHOLES WILL YOU HARPER.

  7. The gun registry is ok, its just a pain in the ass sometimes. I wish I would have bought more guns back in ‘the day’ when you could buy a cheap shotgun or rifle at canadian tire or sears.

  8. Cranky…let me get theis straight.
A pain in the ass (according to you ) is OK.
    That’s fucked up man.
I have to say I don’t for a second consider a pain in the ass to be ok at all.

  9. Let just say when you’re buying guns it is inconvenient in a way that only someone buying guns in a legal way will understand, but you still appreciate its usefulness.
Its like, doing a written and practical test to get your drivers license is a pain in the ass, but you know why it has to happen. ‘k?

  10. I don’t have a problem with the royal visits. I think that having them around is nice and interesting. It’s not that much money and we benefit from the tourism and money spent around them.

  11. Lets all make nasty comments about Aboriginals who are exempt from paying for the Royal Family’s visit!

  12. We are total idiots for continuing to cotton to these fools.

One penny is too much to pay for them.

Why should we bow and scrape to a Queen, when we could use that money to feed homeless kids?

  13. For that kind of money we should get some reality TV style antics in return, maybe even a wardrobe malfunction.

  14. Assuming the average student debt is about $50k, 2.5 million could pay off *counts fingers* this many student loans off *holds up 50 fingers*

  15. God save the Queen,
    Her fascist regime.
    They made you a moron,
    Potential h-bomb.

    God save the Queen,
    She ain’t no human being.
    There’s no future,
    In England’s dreaming.

    God save the Queen,
    ‘Cos those tourists are money.
    And our figure head,
    Is not what she seems.

  16. Ok, I don’t even know where to start with this one.

Let’s start with taxpayer’s money. Why does everyone scream and holler every time any level of government spends money? Are they just supposed to hoard all the money they collect in taxes and not do anything with it? Do people not realize that when the government spends money, it goes back to the economy? That tax credit for the local call centre allows the company to come and set up here and then to pay the staff, who in turn spend their paycheques (generally locally) and the government gets their taxes from the payroll. When we pay for heads of state to visit (not just the Queen, you know). Most of that money stays within Canada’s economy. It pays for security (RCMP usually), hotels and what ever other services are needed. These are all people or business or service in Canada.

Second, the Monarchy itself. Why are people so opposed to the monarchy? Do you not realise that the Monarchy is a huge part of Canadian history? We have had 18 Kings or Queens dating back to the time when Jacques Cartier arrived in the 1500s. The biggest argument to abolish the Monarchy is that it is old. Well, to paraphrase Andrew Coyne: Let’s get rid of democracy while were at it, that’s what? 2000 years old? Yep, time to trash that one.

And, even if we did get rid of the Crown, what would we replace it with? A republican system? So that would mean we would need a president. Guess what folks, that would cost just as much, if not more than our current system.

  17. I find it funny that the OP (moi) never mentioned anything about the tax payers specifically… Just that Canada has to pay for the visit.
The main reason I am personally a little annoyed with Canada paying the bill for the royal’s visit is because I’m pretty sure Prince Charles, and Camilla can afford to pay their own way

  18. Mind Snap, who do you think “Canada” is? The money “Canada” uses to pay for the visit is from the taxpayers. So, it is the taxpayers, by way of the Government of Canada, who pays. And, yes, I have no doubt that Charles and Camilla could afford to pay their own way. If this had have been a vacation, they should have paid, no question. However, this was an official state visit by Canada’s Royal Family (Yes, Canada’s and not Britain’s), and therefore, we pay. We pay for any official state visit. Who do you think paid for all the extra security around Barak Obama’s visit? Not the USA, but Canada. (Of course, he had his own people, just like the Royal Family did).

Interesting fact: If a member of the Royal Family (let’s say Queen Elizabeth) visits the United States directly from Canada, she is presented as the Queen of Canada, not the Queen of England.

  19. Mind Snap,

Hope I didn’t come across as a total bitch on that one. I am just re-reading my post and it sounds bitchy….lol…sorry.

  20. Great point there Bitch, Please!. I like traditions, especially ones that only cost me about 7 cents a year. Do we NEED the Royals? Probably not. But as long as some of us WANT them around (and they can still draw a crowd), I see no reason to give them the boot.

  21. Not only is it tradition, do you know what it would take to drop the Royal Family? Re-opening the constitution, that’s what. And, if we re-open the constitution, all the provinces will be asking for more. It will be a nightmare.

So let’s just spend out 7 cents wisely. Next year it may be 8 though, as Queen Elizabeth herself is coming to town. That’s gonna cost more. LOL.

  22. The queen is one of the very few people that knows what’s going on. Also don’t forget she got her hands dirty during WWII as an ambulance driver/mechanic. She is briefed at least once a day on the activities that are going on in the world (just as the PM and the President are). She is also consulted with. She may not have “power” but she has a vast knowledge. She is consistancy. I’d rather have her in power than most of the heads of state in the world.
