What is up with this let’s just raise taxes idea any time there is a area of concern in our province? To many overweight people, let’s raise the tax on junk food. Too many smokers , lets raise taxes to convince them to stop. To many drunks , lets raise taxes. To many cars on the road , hell lets raise the cost of toll highways and bridges and maybe registration too, so people will walk, bike or bus. And now our premier who said would balance the books without raising taxes is now saying they may have to do what ? You guessed it raise taxes. Jesus, it’s not bad enough we are already one of the highest taxed provinces, but now we get to look forward to paying out even more. At some point something will have to give. The brains behind the powers that be will have to start coming up with better ideas to solve this provinces problems besides raising taxes or prices. I feel a V For Vendetta kind of uprising should be in the works.

  1. uh, Bro, are you saying that if Rodney were still around, he wouldn’t raise taxes?
If Conservatives won, everything would have just stayed as it was?

well ‘as it was’ was pretty crap to be honest… and at least we had the prospect of someone with a fire under their ass to do things differently.
I think the fire may be subsiding, especially as the holidays hit….
but he’s hell of a lot better than the old crew.
at least he’s transparent about it.

  2. I’m just waiting for them to tax kids because they’re not doing well enough in school and need more resources…

  3. Politics: different players, same game. They ALL make promises to get elected then when in office they do whatever they want. No surprises here really.

  4. Heh. Yeah, an uprising would do real well. See how quickly that gets you killed.

If anyone believed the bullshit during the election of not raising taxes and balancing the books, you’re as dumb as my left testicle. Especially considering the books were being cooked by the previous government, I was expecting a tax hike.

  5. *scoff* my left testicle has an IQ of 140, Fever.

I dunno, I think raising the HST to 15% is a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad move — one that will ensure dexter is a one term premier (and never again will we have an NDP government in NS, mark my words). It’s much easier to raise income taxes than it is consumer taxes. And raising consumer taxes hurts the lower economic classes more than the ones making a decent living.

  6. I’m not so sure about that Pretty Kitty. People with a bit more income have quite a bit more DISPOSABLE income…the kind you use to buy the things full retail tax is charged on.

  7. I think that’s PK’s point. Rich people pay more, because they spend more, but they don’t feel the impact as much because they are spending ‘disposable income’. Poor people are already spending everything they have, so increased taxes means less money for the things they need.

  8. Miles you’re bang on. Someone earning $80,000 isn’t going to notice the few extra dollars they spend on say back to school items and clothes but the person earning $20,000 or less sure will.

Whoever said the NDP were for the common, little folk.

  9. Actually, in the grand scheme of things, it wont matter all that much. It’s an extra 2 cents on the dollar, and it’s increased revenue for provincial coffers because the federal portion is the reduced part. So in actuality, it’s a boon: more revenue to the province, and really, we aren’t treading unknown waters. It’s either that, or increased payroll deductions. This, sadly is probably the only other option in terms of traditional tax. That would mean those who have little will receive less on payday, and probably those who can afford the tax hike don’t pay tax because they max out their RRSPs and take other tax reduction measures. Sales tax is the only way you can nail everyone. So, the little guy gets boned either way.

  10. So, OP did you miss where the MLAs had their budget for constituency payments cut almost in half, wages froze, and did away with the 45,000 payment available to defeated or retired MLAs? Yes, let’s just plunge into murder and anarchy, since Hamthrax is obviously the NDP’s Saint Mary’s Virus.
