I know this post probably will not appeal to the average reader of The Coast . . . but here is goes anways; since the H1N1 Vaccination is not available to every Nova Scotian unless you fall into a ‘high risk category’. The Military within the Maritimes have started poking their personnel this week and most Reserve personnel (who support Canada maybe a couple times a month) are getting their immunizations before all the Regular Force personnel in the Maritimes (who support Canada 24/7 – 365 days a year). Whats wrong with this picture . . how about taking all those vaccinations allot to those Reserve Force units within the Maritimes and give them to the general population – there is a way you can support your fucking country.

  1. Or maybe like in that Will Smith movie where New York is shut down and theres panic in the streets.

    That’d be cool.

Note to self, stock up on shells and bullets.

  2. What pisses me off SO BADLY is how EVERY OTHER FUCKING PROVINCE (no I haven’t checked this, but I know this is the case in Ont, PEI and NB at least) has put people with chronic illnesses under 65 in the priority category, but ooooh no, not NS.

Even health canada says those of use under 65 with chronic illnesses are at a high risk of getting swine flu and the complications can suck ass (and even kill us ffs). But apparently NS is too GOOD to follow Health Canada’s guidelines. I mean the people in the chronic illness category includes people with HIV, cancer, asthma, heart conditions…and those under 65 includes children under 12 — can you imagine how awful it’d be for some 6 year old asthmatic child or a child with a heart condition to get swine flu? I’m seriously disgusted by this. At least put school age kids (5-18) with chronic illnesses in the fucking priority list. Maybe even university students too, since they’re in close quarters with people who are bound to get sick, just like kids in grade school.

But HEY! We have to vaccinate our criminals in jails so screw vaccinating the rest of us! Screw vaccinating our kids over 5 with chronic illnesses! Let’s make sure our criminals make it through the pandemic unscathed!

I’ve concluded that I’m pretty much toast. Nice knowin’ y’all!!!

  3. oh pretty kitty, I think you’re going to be alright. Everyone is in a panic right now, because all of the things we’re told change from day to day, but my guess is by next month you and anyone else who wants the shot will probably be able to walk into any clinic and get it. Just sit back and relax. 2 Days ago everyone I work with was in a panic, now today we find out all employees that work here who want it will get it! Just give it time…

  4. I got my jab at the doctor’s office last week. Didn’t even ask for it. It was offered while I was there about something else.

OP is spot on. Regular serice personal should get jabs before Reservists. But since common sense and government leadership are polar opposites we can expect to see more mishandling of the H1N1 immunization program. Add in a large measure of panic and it only gets worse.

  5. PK where are you getting this information about prisoners being vaccinated? As far as I can tell, that’s only happening in BC.

  6. I’m getting both of my inoculations on Friday, from my GP. I don’t see the big issue, and I’m not in a high risk group, although I live with someone who is in a high risk group.

  7. So, if you have one kid under 5 and two over 5, do they think that by immunizine the younger one, that child can’t bring the virus home to the rest of the family if they’re exposed? I just don’t get it…

Also, what happened to all the “priority” stuff when we first got the vaccine, and clinics all over the place were immunizing whoever showed up top line up? Maybe we’d have some left over during the shortage if they’d actually made people prove they belonged to a “priority group”…

  8. They innoculate the military first because it is prudent and responsible. If a pandemic was to spread and begin to break down civil order, our military would be able to assist. The institutions that maintain our country and society should be vaccinated before anyone else, less we be caught bent over and well buttered should the worst happen.

    Walter

  9. Also, there’s plenty of vaccine. Relax and wait. Everyone will get their shot if they want it. Wash your hands in the meantime.

That said, yes, the vaccination program has turned into a cluster fuck. As with most cluster fucks, mistakes and mismanagement happens because the people who need to be talking to each other to design and execute an effective plan are not. That’s probably why reservists are getting vaccinated while reg forcers are not.

Also, who’s to say a reservist isn’t serving their country in other ways when they are not in uniform? 33 Medical Company is full of public health workers in civilian life who serve their country and community everyday. Maybe someone there with the right initiative was responsible for procuring enough vaccine to accommodate our reservists while someone at Stad dropped the ball.

  10. phhhh. Reg force serves 24/7!? Does that include the 9-2pm days, with extra long lunch breaks, coffee breaks, soup breaks at 10 pm?

  11. “In theory” the military is 24/7 and could be called out in a time of need, yes, even the finance clerks and members of the band ha ha

  12. Ya, if you went away 6-8months of the year or more, and left your family, friends and life behind, maybe you would get to work 9-2 days once in a while too, buttmaster!
And for the record, most of the military that I work with start between 7-8am! So ya, its easy for you to sit back and bitch about it, but not so easy for you to strap on the boots and try it yourself, huh?

  13. it’s sad that some people remember Heston for his relationship with the NRA as opposed to him being one of the first people in Hollywood to support civil rights

  14. The unvaccined soldiers are going to Afghanistan with our government’s hope that they take H1N1 there and helps in winning the “war”.

  15. I have an appointment to get my shot too, Dr. F, and I’m in a high risk group — I made the appointment last week, HOWEVER, they told my dad today (we have the same family doc) that he won’t get his if the current regulations stand…so don’t be surprised if you don’t get the H1N1 when you go in.

I just think it’s ridiculous how they’ve restricted the first wave so heavily, especially in comparison to other provinces. There’s no reason why kids over 5 with chronic illnesses or university students with chronic illnesses couldn’t’ve been on the list.

  16. I have “strapped on the boots”. I am in the military. Reserves. Been overseas. Away from my family for over a year.
Any other reservist, and most non-ignorant reg force can vouch for what I said. Reserves work thier asses off 7 days a week. OP is one of the many bitter, ignorant reg force pers who hates on Reservists cause he thinks we have it so easy. Try walking a mile in our shoes and see how much you like it. Then go back to your overpaid, underworked, pampered job at Stad and whine about it some more.

  17. Sounds to me like you’re bitter about being in the Reserves. But, I take back the “strap on the boots” comment…good for you! Sucks that you gotta work 7 days a week though.

  18. I’ve been both and I’ve worked my as off in both and had some down time in both. That said, over the long run I (and most of the others) have earned our pay and benefits. There were some (as any other job) who were/are what we cal slackers but the vast majority work/worked very hard in conditions that most people would not abide by.

As to the flu shots, the vaccines are not part of the provincial allotment and are separate from even other government agencies. Also, members, to my knowlegde, and correct me if I’m wrong, cannot refuse the shots.

  19. sorry buttmaster, all the reservists ive known have come into a reg force unit talking about their “time in” and courses, and honestly they were jokes. not to mention they get the pick of the best kit(cadpat etc) while the reg force guys had worked with scrap. I remember setting up a tent group for a reservist BIQ….that lasted 6 weekends. hmmm mine was quite a bit longer and covered the whole week…and when they left, they didnt clean up. They may WORK their asses off somewhere else, but when it comes to actual military work…cant vouch for them all and neither can you.

  20. the only needle the prisoners should get is the one where you don’t wake up afterwards….Olsen, Benado etc. form a line on the left

  21. sorry anton…i was making a joke about solyent green…i lusted after the hesmeister when i was a wee lass…naked torso in ben hur, planet of the apes and that leisuresuit in solyent green and his cool apartment in omega man yum yum yum

  22. Kitty – they only have a limited supply of vaccine right now, so they had to start with someone. They identified certain groups – pregnant women, small children, and aboriginals – as most at risk. If they substituted people with chronic illnesses for the pregnant women you’d be happy, but someone else would be upset. They can’t please everyone.

Like Miles said – relax. Everyone who wants the vaccine is going to get it. You just might have to wait a few days (there is talk about adding people with chronic illnesses to the list as soon as tomorrow) or worst case – a few weeks.

  23. I’m in a high risk group, Asthma, & because I have had, pneumonia & pleurisy pneumonia on several occassions I’m a prime flu shot candidate.
Unlike most of the rest of you, I perfer to take care of myself…all the handwashing, avoid crowds, good diet , vitamin regimine is what I have been practicing for years..& i’m still here.
You all need to take a deep breath (don’t forget to exhale) & calm the fuck down. The media has taken this too far & people like most of you here aren’t helping anything ! ! !
Based on data from EMR Canada someone DIES IN THIS COUNTRY EVERY 7 MINUTES FROM HEART DESEASE !

1 Canadian every 7 minutes… why are you not all running around down at the legislature building screaming your heads off about that ?
How many deaths in Canada from H1N1 ?
As of Nov 3/09 Public Health Canada says that 101 have died. Only 1 of them is from Nova Scotia !
Since this time yesterday 205 Canadians have died from Heart Desease, like heart attacks .
So please, will you all get over your fuckin’ selves !
The humor of your pathetically narrow views, has run its course, I’ve given you a real reason to be panicking.
It’s been going on FOR YEARS & none of you have freaked about it .
    200 + a day people is an EPIDEMIC , IMO !
101 since the begining of the so called swine flu epidemic, is “the sky is falling mentality” & mental is what most of you are. Perhaps if you get out side & enjoy some fresh air, stay away from TV & Computer screens & don’t pick up a newspaper, & relax…Your chances of a Heart Attack will diminish, because your a hell of a lot more likely to have this problem than you are to encounter a bout of ‘deadly’ swine flu !

  24. I’m not even going to stop chewing my nails… I ain’t scared.
How do you think my immune system was build so heartily?

Never even had the flu before so the likelihood of getting this ‘worrysome strain’ is close to nil. I’d worry more about all these freakin/’ bubble kids with the crazy sanitards for parents.

Let the kid eat mud pies… they’ll thank you when they’re older.

  25. My husband, an non medicail military man who is not on a ship or in a situation where he could come down with H1N1 got his shot Monday. I said why???
His respond was, we are so short staffed in my department, they can’t afford to have people getting sick. I understand where he’s coming from but step aside military man….if there are parents who want to give their kids the H1N1 shot, it should go to them first…not you! Sorry my dear sweet husband….but you don’t count for high risk in my eyes!

  26. Correct me if I’m wrong but the military, federal inmates and first nations populations are mostly covered by federal health care not provincial programmes like the rest of us. You may as well bitch about them getting free moves, housing, tuition, food or clothes. For better or for worse, they aren’t part of our system, now move along.
