I was always able to keep my head above water in terms of paying bills and keeping on top of my student debt. But my paycheque hasn’t increased for years and my bills, specifically in the power department, get larger all the time – despite my sincere efforts to conserve energy. And when I think about it, why do I even make an effort to save energy? Because it’s the responsible thing to do for the benefit of public health and the environment…but it clearly won’t make things any better for my power bill. The less power we use, the less we should pay. However the less we pay to the power company, the higher the rate becomes to compensate for the loss. Oh look, someone has me by the balls! —Free Power

  1. “The less power we use, the less we should pay. However the less we pay to the power company, the higher the rate becomes to compensate for the loss. “

    Good point, OB.

  2. My latest power bill was $192 bucks and there’s no real reason why it should be so high. We don’t leave lights on, we only do laundry once a week, we turn off the tvs when we leave the room, etc…, but it’s still high. 🙁

  3. I recently moved, I especially liked the “account creation fee” that NSP and HWC imposes but phone/internet nothing. Must be nice to have monopolies!

  4. I’m with you pretty we shut everything you can possibly shut down down at all times, and our bill still runs in the mid 200s all the time. I can’t even keep track of what the current rate is because when are they not getting a rate increase?

  5. I just love the argument from NSP well you pay less than a lot of people in europe were just trying to level it out. Those people have windmills, solar, and other alternative more expensive sources of energy. We still get a big % of our power from cheap dirty coal. We should not even be close to paying as much as they are.

  6. welcome to the world of corperate crooks and monopolies. you get fuck all for what you are skinned for, each and every time, you turn on a light, someone at emera gets a fat bonus.

  7. Yeah it sucks how that works. The energy saver light bulbs cost a lot yet they don’t save you any money. They want you to use less power but charge you more for using less!! A no win battle at this point. I wonder what happen if people just used candles for light? hummm :).

  8. I remember not a few yrs ago when mine was 20-30 bucks a month…
    (around 60 bi-monthly what what I budgeted.
    3 yrs later or so… and it’s 130 bi-monthly…
    that’s fucked man.
with no-one getting raises these days, with everything costing so much more so quickly…

    that’s just fucking stealing.
you could have SAVED 50 MILLION renovating that new, fancy center you just had to have… and give us all a fuckin break.
or at least fix the god damn lines so a raccoon *SHOCK* or salt air *GHASP* doesn’t cut power to thousands of people.
of the things I hate about this shit-hole… NSPower is right up there near the top.

  9. OB, you haven’t had a raise in years? Do you even get bonuses? Most people do….you must be in the wrong career.

  10. Haven’t you been keeping up on the news? They’ve been reporting that NSP is going to charge more for those who use less. NSP = Nova Scotia Pirates.

  11. What I noticed is that once everyone switched to the new environmental light bulbs the basic rate went up drastically. Basically I now use 25% of the wattage I once used by switching to the more expensive enviromental lights but I don’t see any savings for me. The power company is getting more with their basic charges to make up for me being energy efficient. Crazy. Power is more expensive in this province than most the others. Everyone who moves here is amazed and disappointed by the increase to heat and power their houses. We are getting ripped off hard in NS.

  12. “So we’ll piss and we’ll moan ‘neath the old hydro-tower.
They have the monopoly, so they have the power”

    Now, do “Classical Gas”
