I met you on Saturday on the #2 bus going downtown. You obviously were not having a good time on your vacation from Toronto and I am sorry for that. Halifax is a wonderful city with lots to see and do during the summer. However it seems that the family or friends you were staying with were obviously failing as hosts in not taking the time to show you around. And while you did the right thing by striking out on your own I would have suggested checking online or the papers for event times and locations. But to be honest your attitude also needs adjusting – yes our transit system isn’t as good as Toronto’s is and yes, we probably have many of the same festivals as Toronto does but try to be a little more…em…gracious about these things? Also try to open your mind about any gay pride parade – you missed a good one by the way!- and you should be a happier person. Anyway, I hope the rest of your trip goes a little better. —Fellow Torontonian now at home in Halifax

  1. Alternate headline: “Homophobic visitor stuck in out-of-the-way suburb during a week of crap weather has a bad impression of city he’s never been to before.”

  2. ^^^ Did you really have to involve us in your disappointing, intellectual masturbation session? Was there ever a bitch posted here that brought you to hands free, intellectual completion? All these years as a poster here and you still get disappointed by the quality of “bitches” posted on this over-moderated censorship rag? And you call me stupid…

Since my replies to both Stephen Harper and Wadplop were deleted for some reason, I’ll give it another go in the hope that this one sticks.

One must remember that for Stephen Harper anything he does not understand consists only of “intellectual masturbation.” This is because he lives only at the level of unsupported assertion, never at the level of demonstrating the truth of that assertion by means of reasons. So, since he has asserted that my “Assessment” consists of “Intellectual masturbation” it therefore simply is the case that for him my “Assessment” in fact consists only of “intellectual masturbation.”

However, the response is easy. One need only ask Stephen Harper to demonstrate the truth of his assertion on the basis of reasons. But he has no such reasons, all he has are assertions.
But all is not lost. He concludes with the observation, “And you call me stupid.” One cannot ask for a better definition of the term than being unable to demonstrate the truth of one’s own assertions by means of reasons. To live only at the level of unsupported assertion is what it MEANS to be stupid.

Wadplop’s comment, “Once a teacher always a teacher,” is more reflective and there is a great deal of truth to it. However, everything depends on one’s conception of teaching. So what is teaching? Teaching is subject-specific. Teaching science, for example, is a different thing that teaching history. They are different “modes of thought” and have different criteria of excellence. Also teaching differs depending on the level taught. Elementary teaching consists of uni-directional “instruction” while university teaching, at least at the undergraduate level with its massed classes, consists of academic modelling by the professor. At the upper secondary level however, teaching takes on its interactive, dialogical form aimed at the cultivation of critical thinking. For me it is “teaching” properly conceived.

    A pleasure as always,
