It just disgusts me when someone who is obviously pregnant comes into the store I work at and asks for cigarettes, I hate selling to them, they are harming their unborn child, and not to mention if they have any other children, I unfortunately have to sell them the cigarettes once I ask for ID to prove that they are 19! I agree 100%, but I don’t think that a law would stop them from smoking. We all know that 18 year olds never drink alcohol because they aren’t able to buy it from the NSLC. Also that is some pretty thin ice to be walking on, imagine refusing some fat chick cigarettes because you thought she was prego?

Anyone remember that case out west about a decade and a half ago? That pregnant chick who had an addiction to sniffing glue or something and the government took her to court and lost because a fetus/embryo isn’t a “person” under canadian law? (which always makes me wonder why people who kill pregnant women are always charged with murder of the fetus too — I mean I’m not defending people like that, they’re pieces of shit, but if the law says the fetus isn’t a ‘person’ how can someone be charged with their murder?… never made sense to me).
Women who drink excessively (a glass of wine here or there, won’t hurt, esp in the last trimester) or smoke during pregnancy, knowing what we know today about the affects on a fetus, are disgusting pieces of trash.

Yes, but TTFN: back then there wasn’t the knowledge about the potential consequences there is today. It’s not a certainty that a fetus will get FAS or other complications, but it’s a possibility, and with all the education out there on the potential risks, I don’t know how anyone, in good conscience can put their children at risk like that.

tobacco does not produce a down syndrom baby, it puts your baby at risk of being small or underweight. Gestational diabetes puts the baby at risk of being overweight, should be ban pregnant ladies from fast food restaurants, as well as smoke shops?

So… some of you are saying that smoking regularly during pregnancy reduces the risk of getting asthma and allergies and such? Did you ever think that the increase of documented cases of such illnesses is due to the fact that we have more knowledge and better technology to detect and diagnose such problems? Back in whatever day you’re referring to, I’m sure someone could have dropped dead and you would attribute that to something like a heart attack or whatever but the technology to look into that maybe it was an allergic reaction or underlying illness wasn’t available. There were probably many illnesses that people and children just lived with untreated or undiagnosed because there just wasn’t anything known about their conditions.
