I had a great Canada Day with my family – my only beef is that while we were walking along the waterfront I could not believe the amount of people lighting up while walking and blowing smoke over everyone!! What gives??? ALSO I was nauseated to see how many smoking around young kids in strollers! Hello!!! The highlight was the gal who was smoking and pregnant!! Butt out everyone!!!!

  1. Dear Organic,
As a smoker I agree it is a no no to smoke in front of kids I choose not to do it ALTHOUGH if it is a public place such as walking downtown thats another story… not everyone was off yesturday some people work downtown and enjoy a smoke on their break. As I walk by children in public i gen stick my cig behind me so they A) dont see it and B) smoke doesnt go in their face where they choose not to smoke.

BUT point of the story its outside, its apublic area you can smoke freely

  2. I wonder how many people know that smoking in cars with minors is a legal offense now in NS?

I see all kinds of parents /adults doing it….

    http://www.gov.ns.ca/legislature/legc/stat…

When I was on the Mayor’s Task Force Against Thugs I mean Drugs….my boss was instrumental in keeping this issue as an active discussion and I joined on board since 1992, it took this long…. dang….. 17 years to protect our minors rights to breath????…

    for shame
    Anyway it is FINALLY here…

  3. I’m trying to figure out why the fuck the fireworks were like 2 kilometres down the harbour from where everyone was standing on the waterfront.

  4. Smoking bitches piss me off. Last time I checked smoking was still legal. What would you have the smokers do? Just because they smoke doesn’t make them any less human. Walk away if it bothers you and shut up about it.

  5. Aw my fuck, cigarettes are legal so guess what, some of you non-smoking boneheads – the problem isn’t going away until they are made illegal and even then there would be no guarantees. They might as well make belching tractor trailers and buses illegal with all the shit they pump in the air on a daily basis. You people want this fucking perfect smokefree world but it isn’t going to happen. That’s the reality.

  6. OP- So what is the problem? Was the smell of cigarrette smoke interfering with the stench of the harbour as you walked along? Where the fuck do you EXPECT people to smoke anyway?! (and no I am not a smoker).

  7. I can’t believe some peoples’ “holier than thou” attitudes. It’s a public place, outside – shut the fuck up already! They’ve taken away every other fucking place we used to smoke (including bars), so where do you expect us to go?
You don’t like it, move to Kentville with all the other perfect people.

  8. I don’t know what the fuck it is about some non-smokers, but it seems like a fair few of them are drawn to smokers like moths to a flame. It never fails – take up a spot against a building wall (even better, in an alcove, like the Roy Building has), or on the curb, or in some out of the way corner, and guaranteed some hapless non-smoking nimrod always manages to walk by so close that you could touch them with your elbow. Then of course you get the dirty look, or The Cough.

And these are the same knobs that sit outside on a calm summer evening and smell the woodsmoke with pleasure. I guess carcinogens are OK if they don’t come from burning tobacco leaves.

  9. I remember a time when smokers had their own private rooms, in bars & resturants. THey would go in there & smoke & socialize. You hardly saw them in doorways when it rained, or snowed, they would just go to their ‘smoking rooms’ .
Oh, well the non-smokers got what they wanted…those rooms banned as well. Sometimes you got to be careful for what you wish for, it comes around & bites you right on the ass !
    L M A O

  10. Thanks Heathro, I always get those hick-towns mixed up.

Speaking of the old smoking rooms, I remember being in the one in the SUB when I was at SMU. This woman walks right into the room and starts with the fake coughing. Then about 50 smokers in the room all yell at her to fuck off at the same time – some even threw stuff at her. It was awesome!

  11. i miss smoking in bars 🙁
i end up missing some bands because of being outside haha

  12. I don’t give two shits about people who smoke as long as they follow the frigging by laws. And by that I mean: don’t smoke in bus shelters and by entrance ways, please?

I don’t really that’s TOO much to ask for!

Also: I know some really decent smokers out there. Not every smoker is an inconsiderate fuck. I know A LOT of smokers who won’t smoke when children are around and a friend of mine refuses to smoke in restaurants in the states where there are places where you can still smoke indoors. He said he might be a smoker, but he’s not an asshole about it.

  13. Also: is it just me or have smokers become the new “fat people”? Like, it used to be ok to ridicule fat people, and now that it’s somewhat less socially acceptable to do so, smokers get the brunt of said hostilities?

It’s almost like they’re all seen as some trashy subsect of society that OBVIOUSLY is lower on the socioeconomic food chain…Shit, I know smokers who make millions a year. Srsly.

  14. If you care about what the general public thinks, you’ll always be cornered for one thing or another. Ya can’t please everyone so ya got to please yourself.

  15. “….lot-in-dah-dah-dah, lot-in-dah-dah-dah”

Nice one, TTFN, laying down the immortal wisdom of Ricky Nelson 😉

  16. Ok, did at least one person watch the you tube link I put up for bill hick’s “non-smokers” routine. It’s sweet, and so appropriate to this bitch.

  17. Smokers are the new fat people that is hilarious.
how about we start pasting pictures of coronaries and brain strokes onto your chocolate coated sugar bombs? Although I can’t stand getting smoke blown into my face I also can’t stand the sight of obese people slipping under the ridicule radar. We teach our kids not to smoke, not to do drugs, how about not to eat chocolate coated sugar bombs? The end result is the same for everything isn’t it? I mean, a shortened lifespan (not that I care about your life span), but a massive drain on the health care system (I do care about waiting for 6 hours when i have a legitimate reason to see the doctor, and when i say legitimate I mean one that isn’t the result of self poisioning.)

  18. You know, in cities that “have money”, I’ve seen bus shelters for SMOKERS!! At Toronto airport and even at many hospitals across Canada.

Apparently the gov’t will only allow shelters for non-smokers. Maybe they could get the funds together for a few smokers shelters? I mean in the same places where there are the regular shelters.

Who’s conspired to ensure that smokers would be forced to stand out in the weather that the non-smokers are protected from? I can’t believe that nobody has thought that if there are two bus shelters, the larger one could be for non smokers, and the smaller one for smokers.. after all, I believe “they” are the minority now.. actually I’m still attempting to quit.. but I’m not giving up.. 🙂

Why should a smoker who NEEDS his “fix” have to stand in the blizzard while the non-smoker is allowed to get out of the howling wind and blinding snow? Since the gov’t allows tobacco to be sold legally, aren’t they then enabling and perhaps supporting the very issue of “us and them”? If our society allowed each to live peacefully, as in those smoking rooms that kept the smokers from hanging around doorways. Oh yeah, outside, the smoker must be 15 meters away from the entrance. In that case, shouldn’t there be a way to keep from freezing to death in a NS winter? There is nowhere to get away from the wind anywhere downtown and in many other places.

This argument will never be solved until someone takes a stand for the city to provide a valid shelter for smokers, otherwise smokers will always be in your face, like it or not.

  19. Mikey but that’s not good enough. bars here spent tens of thousands of dollars for smoking rooms (which worked) but it was still not good enough for the “do-gooders”. Now they bitch because the smokers are smoking outside. I used to be considerate but don’t give a fuck anymore. That’s what happens when “holier than thou” shits start their crap.

  20. Suck it up sunshine. Yes smoking is illegal in cars with minors…under the motor vehicle act…not criminal law. Just like cellphones, and seatbelts. Mind you it is a common sense thing not to. In a PERFECT world, nobody would smoke or drink to excess. Nobody would have to suffer loss, no child would go unwanted. Yadda yadda yadda. Point is, it’s still legal, in public, which is where you were. And not to say that this law doesn’t ‘make sense’, but just because something is a law, doesn’t make it right…as a free thinking, hard working human being, who pays taxes like most everyone else, I have the right to smoke whatever I like. And while it’s legal in public, I’ll do it in public. Mind you I haven’t smoked in 2 years….not a healthy choice…but still a legal choice for us to make…ourselves. Pretty soon the government is going to be telling us what to do and how to do it from the moment we wake up in the morning right down to the dreams in our heads….oh wait, it’s already begun.

  21. Anyone remember when you could buy cigarettes outta machines? They had those cool ass knobs you pulled. Frig.

  22. Hell, yeah – I remember getting them at some tavern on Wyse Road (Old Favorites?) before my games of PacMan and Tuken-somethingshit. Man, when I was young, nobody freaked out over smoking like they do today. We all knew it was bad for us, the press made sure of that but today a smoker is made to feel like he/she should be hit by a speeding bus. Again, I draw attention to the fact it is LEGAL so until it isn’t, I don’t consider this a worthy bitch.

  23. i say for the organic people suck it up! deal with it! people have been smoking for years and they will be smoking for years! stop making it harder for us we get enouph crap from everyone else.

Smokers be courteous dont smoke around kids and in bus shelters if it contains people

Non Smokers-> Stay out of the smoking area! yes they can be sheltered but dont come in the smokign area and start couphing! your in a smokign area!
