You can take your over-priced crap and shove it up your ass. You made me quit my job to work for you, and then you turn around and fire me for NO FUCKING REASON! Even after asking for the reason, you refuse to give one. It’s no secret that you’re not busy this summer and you can’t afford to pay all your staff, maybe you should have fucking worked that out BEFORE you hired me and then left me with one month to find a job, which is fucking impossible, and I needed that money for school. THANKS A LOT, DOUCHEBAGS. —Pissed Off and Unemployed

  1. OB, you can’t be fired without just and probable cause. Go talk to the labour board.

  2. Some people use the word “fired” for any kind of termination. Sounds more like the OB’s employer laid them off due to a lack of business.

OB, I feel your pain having been there before. However sometimes business conditions deteriorate unexpectedly. You’re probably better off looking for new work, any work, than you are bitching about it online.

  3. If you were let go in the three month probation period then an employer doesn’t have to give you a reason nor do they need a reason to terminate your employment. It sucks but if this is the case then theres really nothing you can do about it.

Worst case scenario is that your next employer will appreciate the work you do for them. There is lots of work out there for someone who wants it, just look at the job bank, it’s full of job openings. I was with an employer for almost 6 years and quit to take another job, realizing that wasn’t the job for me… I have now had three jobs this year and have not been unemployed for even 1 hour.

  4. dude if you were laid off
    1. You may qualify for EI until you find something else.
    2. You may want to ask your ex boss about severance.

  5. OP, even in tough times, about 87% of the workforce has jobs. Those are good odds. The next time any employer shakes your hand and wishes you good luck, remember that it’s him that needs the luck, not you.

  6. Exactly how did they make you quit your previous job and work for them? Did they put a gun to your head?

As previously stated, an employer can within three months of hiring you, release you for any reason or for no reason.

  7. Sounds like someone has an inflated sense of “worth”, blaming others for everything when things don’t go their way.

Buck up and deal with it.

  8. OP was probably working for them for less than 3 months. If you’re working for them for less than this period of time they can get rid of you without cause.

And OP probably doesn’t have enough hours to qualify for EI, and if they’re a student on loans…. they don’t qualify anyway.

Make sure you get an ROE from them (a hard copy — a lot of employers will just file one electronically with service canada and you’ll never see it) — it’ll have an ‘official’ reason on it. Did the boss say you were “fired” or did they say they were “letting you go”? Just because they’re not continuing your employment, doesn’t mean you were fired so don’t feel bad about that, OP! You likely did nothing wrong. Bosses can be jerkwads and get pissy over the stupidest shit. I had a boss who gave me a bad evaluation once and said I was a terrible employee simply because I asked for an ergonomic keyboard for my carpal tunnel/tendonitis in my hands and he had to provide one as per OH&S regulations. Meanwhile, I met all my deadlines and my reports needed minimal editing, so I must’ve been doing SOMETHING right.

  9. OP, look at it this way, you’ve learned a lesson about the real world that no university course could ever teach. Enjoy the rest of summer on the beach.

  10. OP said they needed the money for school. Even if they did get EI, the money stops coming in the second they return to school, unless it’s being used for approved training purposes. And if they are a student I doubt they have enough hours over the qualifying period to be eligible for regular EI benefits (something like 900 hours for first time applicants or re-entrants). I’m sure a fast food joint or shitty box store will hire you though.

  11. Yeah, I worked full time for over 7 months to get enough hours to qualify for EI.

    … which I STILL haven’t received yet.
