Seriously?? Smoking on hospital grounds – especially a children’s and women’s hospital?? Peeling off the “no smoking” signs that are posted everywhere? Are you so incapacitated by your poisoned lungs that you can’t walk the 50 feet to get off the property? Or you think hundreds of cigarette butts decorating every surface, snow bank, and bush is a “must”? Oh wait – I know! You must think that because YOU enjoy poisoning your body, you should be generous and benevolent enough to share your toxic fumes with the patients of the hospital – immuno-compromised babies, children, and women. Well done. Do you really think a hospital does not have air intake vents for “fresh” air? Shaking my head at smokers’ utter lack of regard for vulnerable people… —Disgusted – SO disgusted!

Pssst – I hear they also have a Gentleman Smokers FB page where they post ribald comments.
I’m certain there is a Ladies Smokers FB page too. And I’m sure the ladies were the sign-peelers…
Instead of bitching on here, why not report this to Protection Services if it bothers you so much?
They’re easily accessible in the entrance of the Women’s Site.
So now women require protection from smokers??? The poor dears….
OB, are you a former smoker? Former smokers are usually the worst critics; they, followed by better-off non-smokers who have never known addiction to nicotine.
Did you know that nicotine is equally as addictive as heroin? We treat herion addicts with narcotics and tell smokers to fuck off. We set up elaborate systems to treat addiction and tell smokers to fuck off.
We allow the existance of tobacco companies. We allow the treatment of tobacco with ammonia and other cancer-causing agents. We profit from the sale of tobacco products, especially to minors and the poor. We are outraged that we pay such high income taxes and legalize tobacco sales so we can pay for smokers’ cancer treatments.
Now, in case you are so stunned as to not understand my point, allow me to concisely state: OB, you too are culpable and equally responsible for smoking because all you do is bitch about it.
Smokers: quit now-try Champix. I quit using Champix after 30+ years. That was 6 years ago; haven’t smoked since.
OB, fuck off.
I’ve spent some time in the children’s side, lately, and as sad as it is to see folks ignoring the non smoking signs, the air in there is fine. Dry, but fine. Unless there’s a life flight and the vents are closed, the air is perfectly fine for patients. And even during a life flight the air is fine with closed vents.
I’ve also been seeing most smokers on the sidewalk on Robie and University, nowhere near entrances.
I’d say this is a MUCH bigger problem at the VG where you often have to walk through a wall of smoke to get in because security does sweet fuck all about the smokers ignoring the signs.
I quit smoking for a while with Champix also but I tried it twice and was not able to make it through the full prescription. For some people it works great (and it did stop me from smoking for 2 months while I was on it) but be warned! For some people, myself included, there were extreme psychological side effects.
THE GENEROUS AND BENEVOLENT SMOKERS
“You must think that because YOU enjoy poisoning your body, you should be generous and benevolent enough to share your toxic fumes with the patients of the hospital – immune-compromised babies, children, and women.” Disgusted – So disgusted!
But that is exactly what they ARE doing. They are sharing their toxic fumes with the patients of the hospital because they ARE generous and benevolent enough. Their characters cannot be faulted.
A pleasure as always,
Cheerio!
Ivan needs his smokes, they go good with his Faxe beer @ 8 AM.
Oh, Moderator. I believe someone is attempting to provoke fitna with a Bitcher whose account no longer exists. Please exercise your trademark wisdom and impatiality to nip this in the bud.
kthnxbai
Aaaaand watch my account get deleted in -3 – 2- 1……………..
Yes because smoking OUTSIDE of a building is going to affect patients INSIDE a building. As for those intake vents, you do know it goes through scrubbers and filters before going into the system. Afterall they don’t want vehicle exhaust to go through the building. BTW doctors and nurses used to smoke throughout hospitals and offices,
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6UsHHOCH4q8
doh! op how do you think the hospitals get any new customers?
“BTW doctors and nurses used to smoke throughout hospitals and offices”
…and there’s a reason they stopped. Are you suggesting that a little 2nd hand smoke is OK because there used to be a ton of it? This point is completely fucking irrelevant, and makes you seem like a dumbass. A few bad apples likely won’t effect the air quality but those signs are there for a reason, there’s no excuse for smoking close to a building that has sick and vulnerable people.
Hing Frogg trying to make the smoker seem like the victim. Addiction is a whole other can of worms, I commend you on your ability to quit, but frankly, it’s also completely irrelevant in this case. “I don’t have proper support to help me quit” is not an excuse to expose your problems to anyone else, particularly those in/entering/leaving a hospital. Walk 50 ft to a side walk or designated area, as many other smokers are decent enough to do.
There are many courteous smokers out there who will play by the rules, unfortunately, like everything else, there will always be self-absorbed narcissistic bad apples. I hope you did talk to security OB, if not, next time, do so with haste.
While i don’t want to be around smokers I do feel sympathy for an addiction which was likely acquired during those teen years when we all feel invincible and immortal and the future extends no further than the coming weekend. I’m not a religious person but when I find feelings of contempt for others creeping into my consciousness I try to I fall back on the wise saying: “There, but for the grace of God, go I.”
Hey Bro Tom, they also used to sell human beings. Do you see my point buddy?
I agree with OB and others re: smoking outside the IWK and the part about ripping down the signs. You gotta be a special kind of entitled to feel you are above these rules, especially when you’re dealing with dangerous toxins, but why not report this to protection services? I’m pretty sure others have been kicked off of the property with their smokes in the past.
Stop bitching about shit, people and DO something about it!! Nothing’s going to change by people sitting on their arses doing sweet fuck all about it!
Totally legit bitch. Of course 50 ft from the doors is probably in the middle of a snow bank.
No TASB dear, not a victim at all. I was pointing out the differences in treatment and poor attitudes of the medical profession.
Further, recovery from any illness or addiction requires support. Without it, people are doomed to fail.
I did in no way suggest smokers not be considerate of others. I never smoked in a non-smokers home or car. I followed the silly air vent rules. I did not point out the mass volumes of moving air kept the cigarette smoke from eating your baby. I did not attack (physically) the crazy anti-smoking Nazi woman who approached me whilst having a smoke break, berating me for smoking.
Maybe you need to take a step back – smoke one if you have one – and re-read what I wrote; this time with a clearer head, free from whatever emotional demons currently possess you.
Once you complete that task, then and only then may you reply.
she’s a keeper
I’m a smoker, calm the fuck down. I don’t think they should take down the signs, but if you bring children near people that smoke that you’re own dumb fault. I make it a point that if children are near me while i’m stationary I move the cigarette out of view from them and wait for them to pass, or if they decide to be trees next to me I blow my smoke upward. Stop being retarded and contribute to civilized people.
OK where to start…OK the last one first…. superman you’re mighty large to hide your cigs away from children. Why do you suppose there might be children near the IWK, you dumbass. Blow your smoke upward so the kids can’t see it??? WTF about smelling it skank-breath.
I have the same bitch about the QE2 site. Smoking on hospital site: staff, security, patients and visitors.
What did I do…complain at the security office that people are smoking on the hospital property. I have pictures of them. Problem is, they are often Security workers.
I have written to the MLA responsible for Smoke-Free Places Act to be told that Capital Health is private property. WTF are my tax dollars doing there then??
I have written Chris Powers, CEO of Capital Health who said they do all they can to prevent it. Perhaps a condition of employment as a Health Professional or hospital worker should be non-smokers only need apply.
As to the person who whined about the addiction. Yes heroin, crack and even alcohol are addictions, but none share the addiction quite so intimately as a smoker who spews it out their mouths and noses. Yuck. Bring me a gas-mask. You smell worse than my cat’s litter box and no amount of gum hides it. I wish all smokers realized this before they defend their vile habit.
@Ferretgurl you sound like a complainer that’s for sure, someone who just wakes up and wonders how they are going to fuck with other peoples days. Now, you said it yourself smoking is an addiction and it’s been said that it’s harder than heroin to quit, you can’t seem to get your head around that fact which is unsurprising for a moron. – I’m sure if your cat could complain about you he wouldn’t shut the fuck up about you either, knowing how much you complain. Why don’t you mind your own business and let people be. If I can follow guidelines and be a productive adult, why can’t you without making a scene.
FYI: I agree with BreakfastSandwich, People shouldn’t be smoking right in front of hospitals or store-fronts, I don’t and I don’t need a sign to tell me not to, it’s more of a “don’t be an ass-hat” sign than anything just as a reminder for those of us who don’t have that kind of common sense.
