What’s with all these job postings for the Nova Scotia government? They have a union and these jobs get posted to public boards whether or not the position is open to the public. I say post once John Q Public qualifies to apply. Until then, use your own dam website or job board to advertise to union members. The rest of us just get pissed off meticulously following application instructions that ultimately lead nowhere.

OMG I KNOW.
The gov’t of canada doesn’t post internal job postings on their external site!
Although, even if the job IS open to the public (NS gov’t jobs), it’s still a long shot at getting it if you’re not in the union.
They offer them up because CUPE/NSGEU (feel free to correct me if I’ve missed any) is full of bloated, useless, overpaid workers (just like auto workers!) and they’re looking for new blood. It’s good, especially since the new workers get paid less, and then we pay less taxes. It’s a win win!
What’s fun is, as a good friend of mine did after applying for a union position in which they hired internally, calling the HR department at the respective CUPE/NSGEU organization you’ve applied at and ask them annoying persistent questions on why they even bother to post these positions externally when they haven’t even gone through internal candidates, thus wasting the time of poor external schleps who just want a fucking job and think they, oh, maybe have a shot at some shitty, over paid government position they’re not even qualified for where they can presumably dick around all day and not get fired due to “union” protection. I mean, if it works for INTERNAL applicants…
Although, working for the government is pretty soul sucking so…
There’s probably some requirement somewhere that says external applicants have to have a “shot”, so they take a few outside applications to look legit. Tis my theory.
They post them because it saves time if no internal applicants apply. I actually got a teaching job with the NS Gov’t because no one internally (with the union) applied.
I actually know a number of people who have applied to various postions, who were not in the union, and have since gotten jobs as well. And although many jobs are slightly soul-sucking, I actually like my job and I’m paid in line with most workers in my field.
If you realized how much ridiculous red-tape surrounds just the posting of the jobs, let alone the actual hiring, checking, paper work…blah blah blah…then you’d get why they do one posting and not two. I’m not saying it is by ANY means perfect…in fact it’s a crappy system–but it’s actually a lot faster than the alternative.
