For the love of God just include a fucking salary range in the job posts when your advertising for a position online. I know you’re just hoping to lure in naive, hoping-for-the-besters. You know God damn well how much you’re willing to pay and “competitive” and “commensurate with experience” do not necessarily mean the same thing to you and I. So if you want to exploit my university educated brain by paying it $10 an hour at least have the balls to say it up front you conniving buggers!

While I agree that if you’ve gone through university, you likely can’t make it on $10 an hour unless you’re squatting in your parents basement…. you do also have to remember you’re starting at the bottom. They know schools are getting out now and ya never know… there may be someone there who is willing to work for that. Hell, I’d take it AND keep looking…. you have 3 months, no questions asked to quit any time. These days, that may be enough incentive …
Take the job, then find another in that field. Worst case scenario, you have a reference to use for the next higher paying job. Gotta get your foot in the door somehow.
I find job postings these days dont even state where the job is
Back in the day, university-educated people knew the difference between “your” and “you’re.”
Just saying.
Nice catch Tim

It’s Not Worth my Time: You’re straight out of university. You’re not worth their time to hire. Seriously, it’s dipshits like you that make me shake my head and wonder what the hell is wrong with universities these days. You’re more concerned about the money you’ll be making as opposed to the experience you’ll be gaining. You probably have zero experience in your field and still think you deserve $50,0000 a year. Get a crappy paying job, get some experience and then you can worry about how much money they’ll be paying you. Until you have some viable experience in your field, shut up and work.
Ya you have to leave this province, or the maritimes in general, to make good money. I only started making good money here after working in AB for 5 months. Before moving to AB, the most I was able to get for career to do what I’m doing now was $11 an hour. If curious I came back to NS for $10 an hour more than what was originally offered. Simply because I worked in AB for 5 months.
Hey OP, did you ever think that maybe, just maybe, they are not posting the salary because (a) they want to check to see whether your university education taught you enough to have the common sense and research skills to figure out what the going rate for that job is, and (b) that the salary is actually negotiable; that is, they will move the salary up for the right candidate?
Hey randomness, really? why don’t you tell us what the career actually is? you mean to tell me that you were paid $11 per hour, went west for 5 months, and came back in the same line of work for double? I assume at a different place than the first one? couldn’t you just go down the street to the better paying one, rather than taking that 5 month detour?
The reason they don’t put the salary on the job posting is because they will most likely ask you what your salary expectations are and if they can get you for less than what they wanted to pay, great….if you want more they won’t hire you.
It’s all about getting the most “employee” for the cheapest salary.
A lot of you have posted reasons why the employer would not post a definite salary, but the OP asked for a range, and that seems reasonable.
…and the OP does seem to know the difference between “your” and “you’re”. …just batting 0.667 is all.
I’m getting real sick and bloated hearing these ”WELL I’M UNIVERSITY EDUCATED SO I’M SPECCCIAL BLAH BLAH BLAH”…Sweet flying cherubs. Most of us are. Maybe you should gain some exp. before you go screaming like a banshee demanding higher wage just because you went to Dal.
I hear you on that on, Dino. I’d just like to get ANY job in my field to get some experience. Kids graduating uni today don’t realize that in most industries you have to pay your dues. And a BA in anything isn’t going to get you a job doing anything other than workin’ in a call centre….even then.
Shit, most of the kids I graduated with in my last degree think they’re management material right out of their degree. FFS.
However, whomever says you’ve gotta go away to make decent money and/or job experience is bang on. In some industries there’s just no market here, really (or it’s saturated).
I know I’m heading to Toronto next May when I’m done my current program. *shrug*
if they post a range… I can tell you what people will expect.
30-36 000 ….
who the hell will go,
“I expect 30 000″…..
??? you’ll say, “I expect 36 000” and they’ll say, “will you work for 28 000?” and you’ll go, “no, but I would for 34 000″…. -saving time- …. you settle on 32 with benefits.
They get less than the median of their range and you get a job… maybe.
There are markets here, Kitty, they’re just super saturated with baby boomers who can’t afford to retire. Secondly, I don’t buy the “there’s no market here” argument. If there really isn’t an already established business that fits your skills, start one! Sure, it’s tough, but you’ll be the first one in the city to start that type of business, however, if you’re studying it in university, it’s likely that there’s a need for your skill (unless it’s philosophy, the only useless field of study) and that means there’s a viable market. The BDC gives out loans like candy if you’re a start-up in a new market. There’s also ACOA, as well as many different support networks (i.e. local business commissions) to get started.
I dunno Fever… history’s pretty useless as a degree to job hunt unless you want to be a museum curator.
Maybe the university students are super conscientious of the tens of thousands of dollars in student loans they owe. The economy may have declined but the amount of existing loans didn’t when these kids enter the work force. Realize it’s a big wake-up call when you go from full-time student to unemployed.
Also consider students have a unique perspective… they’re not tainted by bad habits. They can be invaluable to a business for that reason alone.
BTW Dino, most people are NOT university educated.
Well I’ve worked with university grads and most can’t spell or put a proper sentence together if their life depended on it. A BA isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.
If you want to make $50,000/yr after graduation join the officer corp of the military. Otherwise be prepared to start at the bottom.
Thanks for all the interesting comments although most of you jumped to the conclusion that I’m straight out of university. Actually I graduated in 2004 with a B. Comm from SMU… not DAL you assuming, opinionated, negative S.O.B and have had a job since then in my area of study (couldn’t quite survive on the crap salary they paid) so I moved abroad so that I could make some money, gain experience. Now I’m back, so that negates any of that bull shit you all went on about. As for the expectations you need $30,000 or up to pay all your bills (due to the university expense) and save a little each month. That’s why I’d like a range please. My bitch was encompassing the fact that N.S. is driving us all away because ultimately they would LOVE to pay us less than we’re worth…they don’t even want to give us an insight to the range in hopes of “getting us for less”.
p.s. Sorry for the typo. Can’t really afford an editor yet 🙂 ooohhhh and I’ve paid my fuckin’ dues already.
I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again anyway. Nova Scotia is dumb for not capitalizing on the fact that it has the highest per capita of young and educated people in the country. Why support call centers when you could support Research, Biotech, Business, Medicine, etc, etc. Many Nova Scotian-trained young adults would love to stay in the Maritimes if given the chance. The government should take advantage of that.
I mean, for any one with a student loan, the government has invested 20-40K on these people and then offer jobs at $10/hr or 20K/year or whatever. You would think if you invest that much money in someone, you would WANT them to earn 60-100K/year here in NS so you can collect taxes off them for the rest of their life.
Sorry for the rant….again.
Bachelor of Commerce?
aren’t there BofComm jobs all throughout purdy’s? and scotia square? pound that pave….you’ll figure it out.
btw, bitching at the regular bitchers isn’t going to get you the most constructive advice or assistance.
We understand you’re pissed but you didn’t tell us you’ve just returned…. so really it’s your fault you’re getting bitched out by assumptions.
sharpen up or we’re gonna flame on.
wow…AKELLS five years after graduating and youve paid your dues. while five years may seem like a long time, its really not. especially when your expecting to go from an entry level job, up through the middle, to the top; while increasing your salary. of course now, most want to start off with an income somewhere closer to upper middle.
i know it may seem absurd and foolish to people coming out of university nowadays, but way back in the day people worked for years proving themselves before an opportunity came along. you shouldnt expect to start at the top. so be patient climb the steps and youll get to where you want to be. just dont expect to get all you want in 5 years.
A_Kells: if you can’t find a job with a B.Comm, you’ve got bigger problems.
ROFLZ @ zZz….history *is* pretty useless when it comes to job prospects….and even a BA in Hist isn’t going to get you a job in a museum…maybe a masters….but….I’d say for MOST BAs you need to go do something else to build on that to find work for the most part.
zZz, I don’t see any problem with the negotiation scenario you painted. Someone inexperienced will just be told that that puts them at the bottom of the range…simple.
I will agree with the OP again and say that it is not smart for prospective employers to hold their cards so close to their chests on job listings when it comes to pay. I suspect that employers who do withhold such basic info miss out on some of the best potential employees.
The bigger picture is that withholding info in any situation wastes people’s time, and that is just annoying. Here, I would also call it unprofessional.
Didn’t say there was a problem… just that no-one in their right mind is going to start right out with settling for the low number… so why should they even post one?
A number is nice… otherwise, use monster or whatever tool you prefer to find what the range *should* be
