So little Stevie Harper was at the Canucks/Bruins game in Boston. Because he is such an important and high level individual, Stevie had to use a military jet to go to this game. The jet cost taxpayers about $10,000 an hour with security costs, etc. Besides paying for his own tickets all Stevie has to do is reimburse the public purse the equivalent of two commercial airline tickets, so about $1,100 total.
WHAT THE FUCK?! While people in this country are losing jobs, having services cut and struggling, this man has the gall to do this? Apparently he is justifying this because it’s ‘cheaper’ to fly from Ottawa to Boston than from Ottawa to Vancouver to attend Game 5.
I cannot believe the Canadian public voted for this man. This is just the beginning. I guess since he has a majority he can do whatever the hell he wants.
Shame on you Mr. Prime Minister. Hope you enjoyed your games. I know when your citizens are standing in soup kitchen lines they’ll be thankful that YOU had a great time at a fucking hockey game, rather than worrying about their growling stomachs. —Sometimes I Wish I Was American

just another example of canadian stupidity i guess o.p. where has the brains gone in this fucking country? i hear the old soviet russia, was never this bad. all heil harper.
Somebody’s jeallloussss ;D
our neighbours to the south aren’t doing so hot shit ob
Last fall, the US military released an updated estimate on the cost of running Air Force One, the president’s private Boeing 747 and it worked out to $181,757 per HOUR! (cough cough) According to a Master Sgt of the airlift wing that operates the plane, that figure reflects operating costs ranging from fuel to engine/plane maintenance. This does not include his security detail, which is substantial to say the least. In addition, Air Force one usually flies with an accompanying C-17 Globemaster cargo plane (I’m assuming to transport his limo, other motorcade vehicles)another huge expense not included in this figure. Also transported everywhere the pres goes is a fleet of helicopters, (as many as five?)call sign Marine 1, USMC helicopters used during long/extended visits. They typically fly in groups and are all identical. One carries the president and the rest act as decoys for would-be assassins. The operating/crewing/transporting costs of this fleet of helos is not included in that figure either. Pres. Obama has apparently spent more days abroad in his first 2 years in office than any other US president. The US total debt currently stands at over $55 TRILLION and counting with a US federal budget deficit of over $1.3 TRILLION: http://www.usdebtclock.org/
Their economy is in the toilet, unemployment is through the roof and you’re complaining because our PM took in a playoff game and HAD to take a military jet to do it, which I might add is also used to transport military members around the globe when not transporting the PM. Air Force 1 can’t make that claim. It’s exclusively for the president’s use. Our PM doesn’t have a dedicated/private plane. I say HAD because due to security reasons, he can not drive the 14 hours to Boston, which would have probably cost a shit load more than flying if you factor in his security detail alone. The fucking restaurants in this city alone waste hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in food. I don’t think a trip to Beantown is going to cause people to starve to death, drama queen. Be careful what you wish for, “Sometimes, I wish I as in America”. Be my guest and enjoy yourself while you’re down there. I trust you won’t be flying?
Two airline tickets as reimbursement? Had the PM taken a commercial airline we would be on the hook for more money as his security detail would have to travel along with him………you do realize we are footing the $$ for the Prime Minister’s Protection Detail (PMPD) which travels with current AND former Prime Ministers of our great land…….do you know how many living former PM’s we have?
Can you do basic math?
I’m no political expert by any means but it seems to me that if you’re going to criticize Harper going to the Stanley Cup Finals shouldn’t be the first thing that comes to mind.
I think he has other things that you would be more justified in getting your shorts in a knot over. I mean US presidents go to EVERY Superbowl and world series, regardless of who is playing. And like avast is saying they get their own plane to fly them and their staff around.
I’m not a hockey fan either but I feel like the PM should make an appearance when a Canadian team gets to the biggest stage that our national sport has, aside from maybe the Olympics. Hockey and other sports matter to a lot of people, as difficult as that is for non sports fans to understand. Not much else brings us together like sports do. What else can pack 20 000 fans into a stadium and have millions across the country/world glued passionately to the tube?
Anyways Harper’s a douche bag but cut him a little slack on this one. He’s just a hockey fan and he is expected to make an appearance because having a Canadian Stanley Cup champion matters to a lot of Canadians.
this is a stupid bitch….. most of the $11,000 is just how much the plane costs even if its sitting in a hanger.
the prime minister is entitled to some leisure time, he paid the equivalent plane ticket pricing and paid for the hockey tickets.
As the prime minister he is not allowed to fly commercial, and like koda says even if he did the cost for flying his detail commercial would easily exceed $11000.
People are just trying to create a stir because stephen harper was a vocal critic of other politicians using private planes to fly.
whatever you think of harper personally (I voted NDP btw lol) you have to understand that the position of prime minister comes with certain costs regardless of the political party. now if he was flying friends and family around all the time and using the plane as a personal taxi… then yeah its a valid bitch.
otherwise save it for something else he does douchey…..
Now if he’d flown down in the back seat of one of these, that would have been bitchin’!
http://sharpshooter-maj.com/Images/bv14/at…
CANADA – Excuse us, but Eff Yes!
Would have taken all of like, 7 minutes, too.
“The Prime Minister is not allowed to fly commercially if he wanted to.” –
Dimitri Soudas, Communications Director and Spokesman to the Prime Minister of Canada.
exactly… so he should STAY THE FUCK HOME AND WATCH IT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE (who cares to watch it)
What is it with him having to make all these sports appearances?
If we had some freak Canadian tennis player go into the final round at wimbledon, is he planning on attending that as well? doubtful.
I’m sure Mephistopheles is reporting my heinous words to him right now.
Aside from last night’s game and the Labatt Brier this past spring, what other sporting events did he attend? (I’m genuinely curious, Z. I’m not trying to discredit you) That’s the only 2 events that came to mind.
I dunno – I’m on the fence about this. On the one hand, just because his comms director said he can’t fly commercial, doesn’t mean he’s lying or being a sleeze about it. Not all comms people are dooshsacks (*ahem*). Further, killbrindi’s right — it would’ve cost a buttload for his security detail ON said commercial flight — plus the hassle of checking it out security-wise (thus, extra $$$). WHY should he have to stay home just because he can’t fly on commercial planes? He paid for his ticket and he paid for his flight. I don’t think the fact that he’s PM should mean he has to stay at home all the time just because. Let’s just make ALL PMs prisoners at 24 sussex drive!
I DOUBT there’d be any mention of this if this was Jack layton or Paul Martin or Chretien when they were PMs.
Actually, I think this kind of thing would have drawn criticism from Harper if he was still an Opposition Leader instead of PM.
Which doesn’t necessarily make it wrong, but it does highlight the reality that PM Harper is just like every other PM we’ve ever had when it comes to fulfilling the duties (enjoying the perks?) of the office.
As his government embarks on its quest to slash government spending in an effort to eliminate the federal deficit, we’ll see if they “walk the walk” as well as they “talk the talk”.
i still say they made himself out of leftovers from the spacearm…sorry miss kitty i know you’ve got a thing going on
well I suppose he should be at our olympics…
that was the other one that came to mind.
still… take private jet into international territory with slew of crew…
or sit back in front of the widescreen and cost us nothing.
imbecilic jerk.
He may be made out of leftsovers from the space arm, but he’s one sexy space arm leftover.
🙁
And like YOU wouldn’t take the PM jet to go see metallica if you wuz PM, zed instead of staying home and watching ’em on TV.
Don’t deny it!
As earlier stated the PM (any PM) is not allowed to fly commercial. He paid what it would cost for first class for him and his daughter including the tickets to the game. He is not the first, nor the last PM to do this. I never heard any hue or cries when other PMs did this. Some media types are harping because Harper said years ago that Ministers shouldn’t use government planes for non-government use and he is right. Ministers are allowed to use commercial flights. He never criticized Chretien or Martin for using the planes becuase he knew the rules about PM travel. As for the protection team, they need to be with him as any team of any country protects their leader. This is a big ado about nothing.
Is that the best Harper can do to peeve his Canadian slaves? Christ, Gaddifi has better ideas.
I’ve got no real problem with him doing this…his new jet fighter program touted to cost 35 Billion…& we’re hearing that with maintenace costs, the ever rising cost of the purchase price for the jets (it isn’t locked in Surprise Surprise) is approaching double the original 35 Billion cost
THAT I have a problem with !
I can just hear it now: “Let them eat cake.”
True enough Mr. More.
It’s actually likely to be at least twice what the Conservatives told us before the election.
That’s something to get upset about. PM going to a hockey game? Not so much.
Well Mr Moore and Commandante, for quite a while I and some others have asked and asked again “What are you going to replace 30 year+ technology with”? and the response is silence. What is out there to compete with to match the next generation jets? The other companies going for the contracts were knocked out. Of course our pilots could make jet sounds and go bang bang. But nice try to go off tangent.
Our pilots could go work in call centres instead of murdering on civilians.
Bro Tim said:
“The other companies going for the contracts were knocked out.”
What are you talking about? The F-35 deal with Lockheed Martin was sole sourced, ie. there was no competitive process among competing aircraft manufacturers.
What should Canada do to replace the F-18s? Well, I’m not a military analyst, and unless you’ve been hiding something from us, neither are you. But there are likely other possibilities. Lockheed Martin isn’t the only manufacturer of high performance fighter aircraft.
I think if you actually examine the roles that a new fighter might fill for the Canadian military, you would see that this plan to purchase F-35s has a few weak points.
Le sigh. If you[‘re going to bitch, at least know how the government in your own country works, you twink. People did not vote for Harper, they voted for their local MP. If the Liberal/NDP/|Rhino options are complete and utter morons, 9 out of 10 people are probably going to do what they think will get them the best voice to fight for their community, not take one for the team.
The F-35 is a multipurpose aircraft that does all these different jobs but apparently doesn’t do any of them overly well(according to an American military analyst CBC interviewed about it). From what I gathered, the maintenance costs are ridiculous, and the Israeli government turned down the opportunity to get a bunch of them for free.
I’d also like to point out at this juncture how tickled I am that the newer Griffon helicopters that went to Haiti this year were grounded constantly for lack of parts and cannibalized while the Sea King kept plugging away.
CE either you don’t read or ignored the number of times I and others have stated there was indeed a competetion and selection of next generation fighters. But I shall remind you f the others in this competetion (BTW was started by the Liberals). They were:
Lockheed Martin – F-35 (the winner)
Boeing – X-32 (runner up)
McDonald Douglas – (their bid never even passed the gate)
Here is a list of next generation fighters:
Sukhoi/HAL FGFA – Russian/Indian
Mitsubishi ATD-X – Japanese
F-35 Lightning II – American
Chengdu J-20 – Chinese
Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor – American
It would appear no other jet maker was interested as none have complained about not being in the running. The only other things out there are the 30+ year old technologies of the F-15s, 16s, and 18s.
Surely the Brits could off-load some lemons on us, we were suckered with the subs so why stop there?
Spitfires anyone?
Baz , I know you didn’t just try to imply that the Spitfire was a lemon.

JUDAS H. PRIEST, Hugo. I don’t even have sound on my work computer and that had me on the bloody floor in hysterics. Can’t wait to get home….
We don’t need stealth aircraft.
Who the fuck are we going to sneak up on ?
Why would we want to ?
We’re not war mongering assholes like the US of Fucking A.
There is no need for us to be able to sneak up on anyone.
Buy a bunch of long ranger transportantion aircraft, why do we even need fighters…who are we fighting ?
This whole fucking mentality is so god damned stupid, it defy’s rationality.
Give our Military decent ships, Ice Breaking capable miltiary/ Coastal Defense/ Rescue ships for Northern work.
Long range reconnessance aircraft. HELICOPTERS , rescue & transport & some attack helicopters if your so damn gungho to be able to fucking attack something.
But stealth airplanes… bullshit !
See that we have our Ground forces with decent equipment to protect the country if it ever comes to a ground offensive.
The US of fucking A has stealth fighters, bombers etc coming out of their fucking ears…WE DON”T NEED IT.
i endorse mr. more’s statement
In the first place, it is not a “Stealth” fighter. It incorporates elements of stealth technology that minimizes it’s radar signature making it less vulnerable. This is the way of the future. All combat aircraft coming off the assembly lines and on the drawing boards are going to make use of stealth characteristics. The F-35 is a “Joint Strike Fighter” which means that it can engage in aerial combat OR drop precision guided munitions either in support of ground operations or to degrade another power’s war-making capability. Exactly like what Canadian soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan are able to call upon NATO air forces to do. Exactly like what we, along with other NATO air forces did to Serbia when they wanted to turn Kosovo into another Bosnia and are currently doing in Libya. Swamp Donkey made the point that it doesn’t do any of them well, which at this stage in the game is supposition since the aircraft has not yet been deployed operationally.
So, why do we need a plane that can shoot down other aircraft. Well, even though we signed a treaty with the United States in 1942 in Plattsburg, New York which gave them primary responsibility for defending the North American landmass we did not , at that time, or at any time since absolve ourselves of the responsibility to carry some of the burden. So even though the “nasty old war-mongering Americans” are going to defend their nation against any potential attack from any quarter, it only makes sense that we not deal ourselves out of the picture, right?
Canada is not a neutral country, it never has been a neutral country and as long as the concept of the nation-state remains a reality it will never be a neutral country. Do you want to know why that is? With our population , land mass, airspace and coastlines there is no feasible way for us to be a neutral country, since most neutral countries like Switzerland and Sweden have a credible enough military to prevent their territory from being used by one neighbor to launch an attack on another .So, Mr. More, how much equipment and manpower do you think would be sufficient to defend Canada from a hypothetical ground attack from the only nation that borders us?
Why would we need ice-capable warships for the Arctic, unless we wanted to maintain sovereignty over it in the face of some threat? Ditto long range reconnaissance aircraft, like the superb but overworked and aging Auroras. Why would we need long range transportation aircraft, if we were not anticipating some need to deploy our soldiers to either a permissive or a non-permissive environment and couldn’t just assume that those “nasty old war-mongering ‘muricans” wouldn’t gladly let us just tag along for the ride.
Why would we need transport or attack helicopters unless we saw some possible need of being able to maneuver, resupply and defend our troops on some mission that we felt was either vital to our national interests, or part of our international commitments. And it is those two things, national interest and international obligations that require us to not merely have a military, but one capable of performing the tasks that they encompass.
Now, I may be psyched about buying the CF-35s. I think it is a smart move to get in on a new piece of equipment while before our current fighter aircraft are obsolete, not 20 years after that point. I do have questions about the suitability of a single engine aircraft for patrolling our airspace. But, since the government of this proud country has frequently given our soldiers, sailors and airmen inadequate equipment for the tasks that they are expected to carry out (Ross rifle – WW1, M-113 APCs – Yugoslavia) and even canceled equipment that the military desperately needed (EH-101 – Jean Poutine). I’m not getting too exercised over that. There are 2 things that I am certain about. 1)The meek are still a fuck of a long way from inheriting the Earth & 2)We’re getting the CF-35 and there ain’t fuck all you can do about it.
wow…i think, combined us bitches could run a country, or at the least the duchy of grand fenwick http://www.petersellersappreciationsociety…
Remember all those trade missions Chretien made to China with a plane full of Canadian business reps.please be thankful that at least Steve attending the game in Boston will not result in your inability to buy a product made in Canada in most of our stores, without Chinese merchandise Wall mart would be out of business!
Very well said Ivan. People have this absurd notion that the CF are Peacekeepers. Peacekeeping was a very small portion duties of the CF. Less than 2% of the CF was involved in Peacekeeping at any one time. I never served a tour and neither did many of my compatriots. The CF, as history shows, was always in the thick of it kicking ass and taking names, from Vimy to Juno to Korea to Bosnia to Afghanistan and now Libya. Canada has never ever been neutral and never will be.
An author once wrote “The meek will inherit the world, after the savage tame it”. Until evil is beaten, the meek will never live in peace. So since you need a military, it should be the best you can have. Would you have the police use WWII flak jackets instead of Kevlar because it’s cheaper?
Thanks Tim. Me Old Dad used to hate, i mean HATE, that asinine “I Am Canadian” commercial, especially the line about us being a nation of Peacekeepers. Like you said, less than 2% of the CF involved in peacekeeping and what miniscule fraction of the populace have ever worn the uniform since Korea? I’m glad that our soldiers can intervene in natural or man-made disasters on either Canadian soil or in some 3rd world failed state. But that is not their primary or sole purpose, nor should it be. If the last 10 years have demonstrated anything, it is that our military, God love ’em, are still very good at what a military is supposed to be. Despite the fact that politicians and far too many civilians are either incapable of, or unwilling to, acknowledge what that is.
Yeah, I’m a Chicken Hawk. A 50 year old Tom Clancy wannabe. I stand behind our soldiers, 3000 miles behind them as a matter of fact, safe and secure, facing nothing more dangerous than high blood pressure and a spirited bus ride through some of Dartmouth’s livelier neighborhoods. I fully admit to having an idealized and sentimental view of our military but I’ll also state that my Dad’s 37 years of service and the men he served with have never given me reason to doubt that view. 20 years after his retirement, it remains unchanged
mornin commander. i meant no offense with the picture. i just think there are some thoughtful, intelligent and passionate bitches on this site^^
Never happen Painey. >: )As long as I get to be High Constable in charge of the 20 handpicked longbowmen, I’ll be perfectly happy. And we don’t need any expensive stealth crossbows, either. Who are we planing to attack, anyhow. (Oh, right – the Americans)
Lol Ivan, and I’ll provide the close air support.

Bro tim, I got no problem with making sure our men & women in The Canadian Armed forces are decently equiped.
But you can transport how much shit in a fighter ?
We need transports desperately.
We need new ships & I’m will to bet my next pay check new tanks, & other armour And the latest body armour is also needed.
These ‘jets’ are Canada’s way of sucking the American’s Dicks.
A way we “help them ” by putting our tax dollars into a scheme they want to see for the financing of their Jets developement, in their bankrupt country.
We don’t need them nearly as much as we need a Canadian Armed forces ship(s) that is High Arctic capable…how many do we have now ????
0 !
That’s -ZERO- , yet last time I glanced at a map of Canada, the Arctic was a HUGE part of it.
how we gonna get troops to the arctic in those jets?
2 AT A TIME & ONE GUY PARACHUTES OUT ! ! !
Do we have trasport capability ?
No to get to Afghanistan, we used loaners from the US of fucking A.
Do we have the latest body armour & any Mechanized artillary etc for the Arctic ?
I don’t know what the rest of you’ve been reading but with Arctic ice receeding at the fastest rate in modern history , all the Countries who have sea frontage on the Arctic Ocean are scrambling for “sovereignty” & we can barely get ships up there in the summer ! ! ! !
The jets are the Conservates way of stroking American penis & is purely a political move.
& will do S. F A. for our military’s true needs to defend Canadian rights through out Canada’s territory.
Here’s a thought… Preditor Drones !
No pilot in danger, & we’ve all heard just how effective they’ve been in Afghanistan & Slipping into Pakisatan & taking out high value targets.
You want some fucking planes lets get some of those !!!
at 4.5 million each we can buy 7,777 of the bastards…for 35 billion & every time 1 crashes or gets taken out, our pilots are going to be fine ! ! ! !
By the way right now we have about 100 fighter jets.
Lets guess (I can’t find a definitive answer) & say there are 5 pilots for every jet.
We would then need 7000 + more pilots ~;p to man our new drones…or about 3500, if we want 2 drones for every pilot !
I guess you forgot about these that we have in the fleet (which is why we got to Haiti so fast):
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm…
We have four.
Ships are being contracted out, we have kevlar body armour, we have transport planes (see pic). I agree we’re due tanks but you’d probably get upset at the cost of $6.21 Million per unit (Abrams) as we would need somewhere between 100 – 120 units.
If we had voted for Liberals we would never see anything and showed they had no regard for the Arctic. Unfortunately when you neglect the CF for too long it takes alot of money to get it up to snuff.
Drones will never take the place of a fighter pilot.
And the Globemaster has no problem landing at CFS Alert (located 817km from the North Pole). So we are getting there after decades of neglect by the Liberals. BTW we have the CF-18s, Leopards, C-7s, APCS, and Halifax Class ships because of the last Conservative government of Mulroney.
And just to weigh in here, Canada DOES have unmanned drones or UAV’s, as they’re called and has had them for some time now. They have been used to great success in the ‘Stan and research and procurement continues for more.
And, I don’t know where you’re getting your facts from More, but the navy has been participating in arctic soverignty exercises for almost 7 years now and there is NO problem getting the ships up there. In fact, it is one of the largest Canadian military exercises conducted, involving all 3 branches of the CF, (Army, Air Force, Navy) as well as the Rangers. Prior to that, soverignty patrols and N. Atlantic fisheries patrols have been conducted for decades.
i’m going to get a needle put in my spine. now that’s not a waste of your tax dollars^^
