To the douchebag who broke into my car last night, did you know I only moved to NS 4 days ago? Did you have to steal my ID from my locked car (where everything was hidden and out of sight) along with everything else? Is this how Nova Scotians act? Are you all like this? Please tell me that it’s not true. Thanks so much, now I think I made a mistake moving here. I am so sad and disgusted at the world. —Why Did I Move Here?
This article appears in Jun 2-8, 2011.

Welcome to the dead zone. This is a very different place. If you have any opportunities in the real world outside NS, then I recommend you take one immediately. Cut your losses.
Soooo just because you moved here four days ago means it’s an even worse crime to break into your car? Like it would somehow not be “that bad” if it was someone who lived her longer?
Why in sane hell would you leave your ID in your car? Even if it was hidden? Especially if you’re not yet considered a resident of NS and can’t go down to access NS to get a new copy.
Dumbass.
Glad you found the B!tch board within four days of arriving.
If you leave valuables of any sort (including ID) in your vehicle, what do you expect? It’s a bummer that it had to happen so soon after your move here – look at this as a lesson learned but don’t judge an entire city by the act of some thieving fucktard.
Yes, we all do these things.
OP,
It could be worse. You might have moved to Winnipeg. Smash-and-grab crimes involving automobiles are the number one property crime there. It’s an epidemic.
There are probably a lot of other places worse than Halifax for this kind of thing.
Sorry about your stuff, but look on the bright side. Now you can join the rest of us “locals” who are trying to have these miscreants rounded up and sent to agricultural work camps in the Annapolis Valley.
4 days in Halifax and you are already bitching? Wow, you will fit in right well with all the other bitches out here.
Lots of complaining and no action is how we roll out here.
why what ever are you talking about?
that’s insane! we don’t just bitch and do nothing…
fuck you for saying that. I want to launch a formal complaint about ‘ifNotForYou’ …
I have to what?
file papers?
meh, forget it.
Yup no where else in the world does anyone break in to cars and steal things….Only in Nova Scotia does this happen.
I like to think that that you lived in a bubble and just escaped.
This is life
I think it is obvious that crime is everywhere, but it is also obvious that Nova Scotia is economically depressed and politically weak and corrupt.
One need only spend a few hours outside the province to see the difference. Outside Nova Scotia there is money, people get things done, quickly. It is really quite shocking and embarrassing how backward we are when you step back and look at it.
I strongly advise people against coming here. It’s like Elbonia in Dogbert. Really.
“I think it is obvious that crime is everywhere”
No you don’t.
Sorry OP there is scuzzy douchebag crackheads willing to break into your car – even in Nova Scotia.
Welcome, and yes, Halifax is a dump full of awful people. Expect more of the same. Get out while you can, I did.
depends on where you moved to o.p., most places are good. there are those places that are noted as shitholes, that spawn these little bastards, that break into people’s car, and steal anything that is not bolted down. gives them a sense of being big time hoods, like their heroes from the slums, where they usually live at anyway.
This just in: DON’T LEAVE VALUABLES, OF ANY SORT, IN YOUR CAR!
Ever.
Maybe you should move to Saskatoon or Edmonton, I hear it’s really safe there and you won’t have any problems OP.
Of course break and enters with theft into vehicles doesn’t happen in any other place in Canada or the world. As for your ID and valuables, what are you doing leaving them in a vehicle. My ID is in my wallet, on me.
In all fairness as a newbee, you’re more likely to get jumped/swarmed in your first four days by being when/where you shouldn’t. Getting your car broken into within four days of arrival is more likely to happen in Vancouver than Halifax. Be glad you got the latter, read up to avoid the former.
Yes OP… ALL Nova Scotians are criminals… obviously.
I majored in vandalism in college, true story.
Why would someone waste their time and break into a car that has nothing of value visible to steal? Then again, the OP might be living in Spryfield or Sackville. If you have plates from another province on your car, it’s a prime target.
Thanks for the comments folks. I guess I need to understand that “Im not in Kansas anymore” . 🙂 I actually live on a nice street in the Clayton Park area. I did manage to avoid the Spryfield/Sackville/Commons trap areas.
ksbeckaa – Seb has a point. “plates from another province on your car, it’s a prime target.” – too true, anywhere 🙁
Not everyone’s a thief here KS. Just the criminals, the druggies, the wangstas, the panhandlers, the anarchists, the union bosses, the C.E.O.s, the bureaucrats, the municipal councillors, the provincial politicians…
Keep away from them and you’ll be safe as houses. Hope your time in Halifax is more pleasant than your first week here. >: )
Rofl @ Uncle Ivan. Thanks.
ksbeckaa: I live on a nice street in clayton park too, but the car is never EVER left out overnight. My mom’s too paranoid about someone breaking in. Not because we keep anything of value in there, but because it’d SUCK to have to put the money out to fix a broken window.
It really does suck that your car was broken into. Let this just be a lesson for next time to not leave anything in your car!!!
Thank goodness for underground parking!
I wish we had underground parking! Next place maybe 🙂
It blows, ksbekkaa. I have a friend who just had a guitar stolen out of his car. It happened 25 years ago too.
When I lived in Toronto a crackbaby pulled my favourite bass out of a tiny window in my van. I play this bass on every gig and recording. After buying film at Henry’s on Church St I went to Richmond’s. My other friend worked there, told me a story about a crackhead who had no clue what he had, and bolted when the cops were called, and btw, did I know what an “F bass” was? “I own one, red”. He pulled my bass out from behind the counter and I relealized, with a sick stomach, what had happened. There was literally a 5 min window of time.
I know you know we’re not “like that” here. I’ve lived in a few places and even though some here would disagree, it felt so nice when I moved back to Halifax last time.
Welcome, don’t leave anything in there you don’t want stolen.
WP
Oooh wheelie — my dad had his favorite bass stolen back in the day too. late 70s I believe. I can’t remember what the bass was, exactly, but he still cries over it today.
I’m not sure the exact details, but he said it was the more gorgeous bass he’s ever owned.
it’d be pretty obvious if anyone tried to steal my bass….

Fish frighten me.
That one would frighten me!
Hub-Unit still mourns his Martin D-35 that got stolen back in the 70s.
This is why I have no respect for musicians who smash, or *ahem* burn their instruments as part of their “show.”
I’d never EVER think of doing anything harmful to my piano. I won’t even practice and have a drink.
Hey PK, if you ever have the chance to see Michael Kaeshammer play live, DO NOT pass it up. While he doesn’t smash or burn his piano, he plays it in ways you’d never have thought possible. Phenomenal artist!

“harmful to my piano”
Difficult to leave out my “organ abuse” comments…
🙂
How are the predictions going these days shitfuck?
Boring.
