Nice stores. Great selection. Nice uniforms. BUT crap hours. Ridiculous prices. They keep going up and up and up without any sign of a ceiling. I am sorry employees of NSLC but you and your stores are taking all the fun out of a wee dram. You are way, way, WAY too expensive. Let the corner stores sell it, generate the revenue by taxing it but save us some dosh in the meantime. And we deserve a wee dram for putting up with a winter like those in Nova Scotia. Get rid of the NSLC. Anyone know how to make rum at home?

When have you ever paid less for anything in a corner store? Those prices would be higher — way higher, because the govt is simply going to apply a tax equal to what they get now from the NSLC and then the corner stores will mark that up, plus they are not buying in bulk. So instead of the great selection and nice stores you talk about, you’d have a crap selection in a crap store that costs a lot more. All so you can buy it after 10PM? Ridiculous. Be careful what you wish for.
wee dram? rum?
The only time I’ve heard of ‘wee drams’ is in relation to Scotch, which, BTW, thank your god that you’re a rum drinker and not a scotch freak like me, then you’ll be shelling out the dineros, believe me.
Crap hours? What are you drinking? They are open the same hours as the malls. If you can’t get your booze in that time, something is orribly wrong with you.
Most remember a time when NSLC hours were similar to banking hours and never on a Sunday.
No shit, Bro Tim. You can tell the ages of some people when they bitch about the hours the NSLC keeps.
OP should get in a fucking time machine and spend several decades of dry Sundays like some of us did. What a whiny little wanker. 10-10 seems pretty damn reasonable to me.
As for the prices – what the fuck else is new? The Corp makes a profit and raises prices. Makes perfect sense – yeah, right.
I agree, if you can’t find the time to get your booze at some point in that 12 hours, well, that’s the way she goes.
Aside from the fact there are ten times as many stores than there was thirty years ago.
its not the employees falt the prices are rising
And some prices dropped.
damn, it’s every year they complain about this… it’s another 50 c . Yes, it kinda sucks but not really enough to do anyhing about it and they know it. Start drinkin the cheap stuff and you may even get a break. throwin’ out props to Iceburg.
O.o They’re open until 10 freaking PM. What are you, one of those poor bastards lined up an hour before they open?
Corner stores would mean higher prices, shitty regs, and they’d carry shit for selection. I’ll stick with the LC(and their wonderful, answer all my questions, order me my nice scotch employees), tyvm.
I’m just happy they opened on Sundays. Before that happened, I used to be there with a straw through the keyhole
Geez, this guy sounds like he likes to get drunk way too much. Most of the outlets are already open up to 10, which is more than enough time to get to a store, even if you work until 9. If you need to get booze later than that, there are some small, private LC’s that are open until midnight in some cases. There, you’ve been educated and quit your whining.
Figure this one out, please. Alcohol is a controlled substance. Prices are set by the GOVERNMENT. The price for a case of Budweiser pisswater will be EXACTLY the same whether they sell it at Needs or if they sell it from the NSLC.
Get yourself a wine kit, wait 6 weeks, and have 30 bottles of wine for $4 a bottle, and your closet LC will always be open.
The biggest boolegger in Canada…NSLC, run by you guess it our disfunctional Provincial Government.
THose of you who don’t travel in the Beck’s Liquor store in Huston Texas I bought a 40 of Captain Morgan black rum for $10.00 even American. An Italian red wine I like here $14.99 was under $5.00 I guess its just cheaper to ship to Texas LOL.
Well yes the prices in Texas are lower, but so is the level of any type of state/provincial government service. We raise lots of taxes with booze in this province, because we need the money. Cheaper booze here = paying more taxes somewhere else in the system, and guess what? we already have one of the highest rates of provincial income tax of any province.
Hows the free health care in Texas?
probably one of those folks that decide at 9:55 that they want to drink, take 6 minutes to walk to the store and are then too late.
of course its the employees fault! can’t hook people up after hours; shameful.
Ralph Klein was elected Premier of AB and the first thing the ex-boozer did was get the government out of the booze business. It was the beginning of a seriously wealthy period for AB. As a consumer I saw the prices drop in a ridiculous fashion as capitalistic competition kicked in and then, very slowly, prices rose to be fairly close to what they once were. The next thing Ralphy-boy did was get the gov’t OUT of the business of vehicle registrations. By shoving these services off to the private sector, new private sector business and jobs are created and even more provincial taxes is collected in this way… but these politicians prefer to debate over Sunday shopping. It’s no wonder.
This isn’t Alberta… thank God.
Keith, maybe you’re just thanking God because you left your coke habit back in Alberta? Are you thanking God for the ignorance of your backward leaders? Maybe you thank God the provincial government deprives the public from running a viable business employing others to perform necessary government administration? Maybe you’re just really enjoying the highest unemployment rate in all of Canada? Give your head a shake…. what a stupid comment.
Kay then go to Alberta.
What a cop out… why don’t you people want to improve the place? Can’t anybody around here take their eyes off themselves long enough to learn anything? Do you really think Atlantic Canada has to be the armpit of Canada forever and ever? It doesn’t have to be that way. It’s just so hard to stick around with bullshit attitudes like this?… “things suck? fuck off… we like it that way.” You bitches so deserve to stay living in a stupid economy.
NGF: you were totally talking about yo’self, weren’t cha?
I really don’t see why anyone would think NSLC’s hours are unreasonable. 10-10pm and open SUNDAYS. Shit.
Also, whomever said that convenience stores would jack up the price of liquor is right. Grocery stores might not, but there wouldn’t be any sort of price control and they could charge what they wanted (and since it *is* a hot commodity, esp in NS…think about it).
Yes Kay, because extending the liquor store’s hours is clearly the first step on our long road away from armpit-dom.
Kay knows everything!
I bet she gives the best head too.
According to her at least…
According to whom, Fat? I’ll tell ya… the amount of “wisdom” floating around here makes me want to throw up.
Hey Rat… I said nothing about the store hours. All I’m saying is take it out of government hands, let competition have a go at it (that will fix the whiners) and everybody wins citing Alberta as a practical, realistic and viable example of this thinking in action…. you fuck wads… I wonder if I changed my user name if you guys would see beyond the end of my Y? I know it turns you on but get over me all ready!
bahahahahaha. that’s it, kay, keep paddling backwards. almost there.
Having lived in Calgary for four years (damn Forces), if Halifax is the armpit, then Calgary is the asshole. God I hated that place.
But there is competition… there are some smaller, non-government run liquor stores.
I vote Winnipeg as the asshole. That place is plain dreadful.
Liquor should be de-regulated. We need to create fairer competition in order for consumers to be powerful again. Monopolies are corrupt.
The truth is that in many other parts of canada the alcohol trade is NOT limited to gov stores. And the great part? It fosters cheaper prices, competition and all the other advantages generated by free markets.
I lived in Quebec for 5 years and learned, by delicious experience, that corner stores had as good, or better, beer and wine selection as half of the NSLC’s in our fair town and that price was constantly forced down by sales designed to bring you into the store. That and its damnably convenient to pick up your groceries and drinks in one store. On top of this, because the SAQ (liquor stores in Quebec) do not have to stock beer, because other places do, that they can specialize in spirits and wine which means better selection and finer products because store space isn’t consumed with frosty beer.
I recommend, and personally loved, a system where independent stores can license for beer and wine and the gov stores handle spirits. We allow tobacco sales in corner stores and its addictive and carcinogenic, why not beer and wine? We enforce age checking for tobacco in stores, the same applies to alcohol!
Also, stores in Quebec sell until 11pm, and i firmly believe that if its after 11 and you still haven’t gotten your drink on your in trouble :p
