My partner and I don’t engage in tasteless public displays of affection. We’re at least as discreet as heterosexual couples are expected to be. Hand holding is as demonstrative as we get, not because we’re ashamed of our relationship, but because it’s not polite to grope each other in public. Too bad more straight folks didn’t have better manners. But what really irks me is the fact that a couple of hot young straight girls playing faux-lesbian on the dance floor of some bar is far less offensive to the average homophobe than two ordinary adult women walking down the street holding hands.

My point is that lesbians are acutely aware of the fact that most straight men are totally fine with “girl-on-girl” action, as long as the women involved are “hot”. It only gets offensive -to me, anyway- when those same guys get all homophobic at any suggestion of a sexual relationship between women who are “not hot”. So it’s offensive because of a, the homophobia, and b, because of the hypocrisy.
As for the fake lesbians, surely everyone who has been to a nightclub in the last 5 years has seen them. It’s the “I kissed a girl and I liked it” phenomenon. It seems to be fashionable for young straight women to play at being gay or bisexual in public. Of course, the show is entirely for the benefit of the watching men.

In John’s defence, BSB, I think he was just asking me to clarify my point, which was that there is an attitude among men of a certain type that sex between women is fine as long as a guy can participate, watch, or fantasize about it. If he can do any one of those things, he benefits.

Kay’s comment that everybody wins is correct, in an unfortunate way. The attitude persists that women’s sexuality exists primarily for the benefit and entertainment of men. Sadly, many young women buy into this idea, and they engage in sexual play with other women not because they are actually attracted to each other, but because they know their men get off on it. But all this is sort of beside the point. What’s at issue is the hypocrisy of men who find public displays of sexuality by “hot” lesbians – faux or otherwise- titillating, but find much tamer displays by “not hot” lesbians offensive.
Agreed. The whole idea of titillating faux-lesbian play is only okay by those standards, because it is clearly for entertainment purposes. When intolerant people realize they’re not kidding, the party’s over.
If these people had that much of a problem with your hand holding I doubt you will see them in clubs watching young hot girls dancing. All we can do is hope our own actions and those of our children are respectful and openminded.

I feel your pain, OP. It surprises me every single time that I am harrassed because of my sexual orientation. I don’t kiss other women in public, and I especially don’t fuck other women in public, but sometimes something as simple as a hug or a little hand holding gets ridiculous and offensive reactions from people.
That is the perfect moment to engage in a full out make out session. Say, ” well I am sorry I subjected you to holding the hand of my parner, and then start open mouth kissing and dry humping right their and then.” its kind of a a rosa parks moment.
