Why must Halifax and Moncton fight over whichever 30 year old, washed-up, bands they want to attract to their little cities, and then lose money on the shows? I decided I wanted to see a band while they were still relevant and went to Philadelphia last week to see Rise Against. I figured if I waited until they came to Halifax/Moncton it would be 2045, Tim McIlrath would be performing with a walker, and I would be in an old folks’ home with Alzheimer’s and wouldn’t remember who the hell they were anyway. Now get this: The ticket price for (sold-out) shows was $35—a steal. Even after-market (scalper) prices were the same or less than what that idiot failed promoter was charging for his concerts last year. And… the R.A. shows made money! No Philly homeowners had to pay higher property taxes to bail them out. Screw you, Halifax. You deserve a steady diet of Justin Bieber. —Disgruntled Hardcore Fan

  1. While it is obviously true that the Halifax concerts have lost money, I would chalk that up to a shady promoter and shitty venue (the commons). I am fairly sure any of the Moncton concerts have faired well financially, and unfortunately for you, OP, it’s these “washed up” bands that attract larger crowds. I am certain that Rise Against would not be able to headline a concert anywhere and bring in 50000+ people.

  2. That’s yet to happen in Halifax either, BRoc.

Moncton shows actually do, on balance, come up making money. I think they had 1 or two that didn’t do soooo well, but with the high revenues form the others, they promoter there is smilin’.

  3. I will be absolutely gobsmack, shocked if this concert doesn’t sell out.
with a hard limit of 30K people… there has to be that many people here and in the surrounding area.
That’s why I was grinding my teeth like a cave troll yesterday when the fucking site was denying my credentials.

  4. It should sell out zzz. Even though I have no interest, it’s been about 20 years since Metallica last played the area. Despite what the naysayers dispute, these are the acts that attract the larger crowds. The change of venue probably helps too.

  5. I’m just super jealous you saw Rise Against… hands down, my favorite band ever! Well, them and Greenday.

  6. … Greenday, Greenday … you must be smoking something good. Greenday …

Heavens help me. I recognize thier contribution, I recognize they’re good musicians however … I can’t, just no. My lady … no.

  7. bcause o.p, hallfax is pissy little shithole, thought everyone knew that by now. but i guess you must have missed the memo.

  8. Metallica is gonna kick ass, Rise Against is pretty good too, and they may play here again … even if the tickets were $100 it would be cheaper than travelling to Philly. Pretty useless bitch seeing as how RA has already played here 😛

  9. Rise Against will never have the level of popularity that Metallica, Paul McCartney, or the Rolling Stones have.. not even close.
Let them fight over the concerts with the washed up superstars.. it brings a lot of money to the city. If only there was a way the city could figure out how to not WASTE all of the profits on hosting the concert to begin with.
On a related note, I’ve seen 4 of my favourite bands in Halifax over the last 3 or 4 years… big names in Indie too 😉

  10. your 35 dollar ticket, plus the 830 dollars to fly to philly and the other 500 for rooms and food…looks like your 35 turned into 1500 dollar price tag…tool !!!!!!

  11. lol it’s similar to my rap concert bitch. Yes, artists come here when they are unheard of and then again when they start to become washed up. Never when they’re “hot” or in their prime or relevant or whatever term you want to use. To see groups when they are at the peak of their careers you must go to bigger, cooler cities. Get used to it. Neil Young and Elton John sell out the Metro Centre in a day, Black Eyed Peas (maybe the biggest act on earth the last few years, not that I’m a fan or anything) get a show at the Palace. Such is Halifax.

  12. I pulled a similar stunt as the OP… Flew out to Toronto for ONE night just to see my fave band live… It wasn’t cheap, but totally worth it in my eyes, and I’d do it all again
