It has come to my attention as a concerned citizen of this great province that we are dependant on “bloody” oil from countries in conflict. Not a drop of oil that feeds our homes comes from Alberta. The money we use to buy oil goes into partially funding insurgents we are trying stop in the world in the form of terrorism.
Why aren’t we getting our oil from the oil patch in Alberta?

Certainly as a province we are giving them the manpower to drive their economy. I used to work in conventional oil well servicing out in Alberta.

What are the alternatives to oil for heating our homes and oil in the form of gasoline for powering our vehicles on the road?

My third and most important question is what is the government doing to move us in the direction of alternative fuels?

We as people need to heat our homes and navigate ourselves around for work and to maintain families. These are basic needs of the society of today. We need to start implementing ways of fulfilling these needs which can coexist within moral and just means and coexist with the natural world. We need real action and plans laid down to bring Nova Scotia to the economy of the future. I want to know what steps are being made to ensure we are a key player in transitioning modern society to take advantage of the technologies that are more appropriate for the times at hand.

We need to join together and work with government to make this a reality.

  1. You’re correct on all counts.

The oil pipelines from Alberta go as far east as Quebec. We get all our oil from the Middle East. But that ain’t the half of it.

Did you see the latest on the off-shore natural gas that we were all going to get rich off? Kaput. Gone.

All those natural gas pipes they’re putting all over town? The Russians will fill them. Seriously.

  2. NS Citizen – Just because Andrew Nikiforuk told you the news re oil in the Maritimes does not make it true, although I think he said 90% of the oil in the Maritimes is ‘bloody oil’. I couldn’t be bothered to point out that he failed to mention that we get our crude oil from Venezuel, although I am not sure it is any less bloody than the stuff from the Middle East.
The VLCCs which trade into Saint John, NB come from Saudi and other Gulf states.
So now you know that you and Tim are wrong.
And you can forget Russian gas, it will probably be Algerian.
You may also want to look into the problems with the lack of wind power availability in Denmark.
If you need an half hour lecture on the subject just let me know.
Last time I checked all crude oil is dirty. Even the sweet crude.

  3. Let’s face facts. Everything you touch can be considered “dirty”. If you own a ring with diamond in it, it’s most likely mined in South Africa by children. But, that of course is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

  4. I think much was learned given the energy crisis under Trudeau. If we only “buy Canadian” we could… well, we can’t make it any worse now, can we?

  5. gotta admit, I don’t know much about this but you all seem to…. so you’s fix all that and I’ll lay out the cheese and crackers platter for everyone to munch on once it’s all taken care of. we’ll mingle and reminisce of times when we were all ‘dirty’.

  6. The point being we’re relying on “somewhere else” for our energy needs– the world market, not our own production. The world market for oil in large part (not mostly, but in large part) consists of the middle east, and the world market for natural gas, in the very near future, will be almost entirely Russia.

It ain’t much of an energy strategy.

  7. Take a look at this link dated March 3 2009
    http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/international/reserve…
Check out the natural gas reserves, Russia is #1 with a population of 100 million (and declining)
Uruguay has 3 times what we have !
And Australia has 60% more gas than Canada.(And loads of coal)
On this list Canada is 20th in size of gas reserves. Qatar takes the grand prize with the greatest amount of reserves per person, a population of 1 million and almost 1 trillion trillion cu feet of gas, which they don’t really need because solar could probably keep them going forever.

  8. How do you know these things? The gasoline and oil we use in Nova Scotia could come from anywhere. Insurgency is a word invented by the media. Show me proof that the attacks against collation troops are committed by insurgents (non Iraqi militants) and stop complaining. Stop driving a car if you don’t want to support war. Wars will always be fought over commodities. You want to make a difference? Run for office, join the war, or shut up about it.

  9. Rafiki, the crude comes from Venezuela and the Imperial Oil in refinery in Dartmouth is geared for that crude. The gas in metro and most of NS comes from the same refinery no matter if you fill the tank at Esso, Petrocan, Ultramar,Shell. Same for the heating oil. You can see the trucks loading at the refinery.
In New Brunswick all petroleum products come from the Irving refinery in Saint John. Nationwide all the all companies have supply agreements with each other for refined products. This is more efficient, cheaper and reduces GHG. Not long ago an Irving ship would come from Saint John to Halifax with gasoline and heating oil and at the same time an Esso tanker would be going to Saint John with gasoline and heating oil. How do I know these things, well I just do because it is my business to know these things.
Yes Rafiki (Are you the monkey in the Disney movie) the oil could come from anywhere but it doesn’t. As for your last 2 sentences I don’t have a clue what you are talking about except I have done one of those things.

  10. Whats your point? are you calling venezula a terrorist economy???????????????????????? pehaps you should travel there and see what it is all about.
rafiki is a swahili wod, not a disney one.
you have run for office, bee to war, or shut up about it. I am gessing it is one or two.

  11. Rafiki – Been to Venezuela many times. Nice people. Very poor. Chavez will keep them that way.
What is a terrorist economy ?
Why should I shut up. Already done that, but you keep coming back for more.
