On reflection, I felt that my comment was too cryptic, that it needed some conceptual analysis to flesh it out. The question is interesting: Are hoping and praying two separate operations or only one? Let us think together.
Hoping is best conceived as an amorphous psychological state, without a specific purpose in mind. For example, John might hope that it will be nice weather tomorrow but nothing really hangs on the matter. However, if John were a farmer and planting season was nigh, he might not only hope that it would be nice weather tomorrow but, indeed, pray that it would be.
In other words, the concept “praying” incorporates “hoping”: One cannot pray that the weather would be better tomorrow without simultaneously hoping that it would be but – and this is important – one CAN hope the weather would be better tomorrow without simultaneously praying that it would be. There is disjunction – conceptual space if you like – beween the two concepts. But more can be said.
Unlike hoping, praying involves communication of some sort. One just hopes but, in contradistinction, one PRAYS to some deity, some higher power however conceived. There is, consequently, no parallel with hoping which lacks this communicative, transcendental aspect. So what is the bottom line in respect to the bitch?
