I hear this is common in fucking Nova Scotia. My sick days just rolled over. Rolled over? Fucking bleeding wanker right they just rolled over. I didn’t take one sick day last year. Not fucking one! I had surgery last week and had to take an extra day off for recovery. No problem, I’ll use a sick day. Ooops, I don’t have a fucking sick day because they rolled over this month. some companies do that, so you don’t take an extra vacation at the end of the regular one. seems there are too many lazy motherfuckers around,that take advantage of those days. and i’m not kidding you, there are gubermint employees, that are the worst of the worst. fuck, they work less than 3 months now.
Sooooo people should be able to rack up sick days year after year until the guy with the perfect attendance has months of sick time?

Like it or not, there are lots of people who go over their sick leave and end up having to take a vacation day. It’s happens and that’s life.
My mom had 5 sick days left or something when she injured herself and ended up off work for two weeks. Her employer let her use her vacation days (which, technically they don’t have to do if advanced notice isn’t given — I know my dad wasn’t allowed to use a vacation day for a sick day where he used to work — and that was in their collective agreement) and advanced her a sick day from the next year.
And this was an unplanned absence.
Was your surgery an emergency surgery? If not you would’ve had notice and would’ve been able to plan for it. Last year I made sure I took of a couple extra days as a contingency plan in case I took a bit longer to recover from surgery.
I dunno, I think this is a stupid bitch.
I have 200 sick days banked and should I ever need them I WILL FUCKING TAKE THEM and be thankful they are available……..sheesh! ~ And perhaps the two years long-term leave I am entitled to afterward if necessary. These are INSURANCE and we do pay premiums for the privilege.

I don’t get this rant either. “Rolled over” means an accumulation to me. We get 8 sick days to use in the calendar year where I work, I rarely if ever use them because I want them there if I really need them.
Maybe they mean it’s use it or lose it.
but then if they lost last years, why wouldn’t they have this years to use? do you accumulate them based on time at work?
like our vacation days here…. they’re accrued as you work throughout the year so that you don’t get ’15 vacation days for the year’, take them all in Jan and then leave the company in Feb.
This way, you would owe them back…
SO I’m guessing their fiscal year is April to March and since it’s now april and you haven’t worked enough days yet to accrue an actual sick day, you’re SOL.
I will say though that’s a shitty move on the employers part for not letting you take it.

My mom’s office splits their sick days into two groups: sick days before july and sick days july and after. You have a certain amount for the year and half can be taken before july and half after. And if you’re sick for more than three days you need a medical cert.
Makes sense, I guess and helps ensure employees don’t abuse them and run out by july.
Also: in order to take short term sick leave (and be paid through EI), you have to be off a certain amount of time before you qualify. So you could end up going a few weeks without a salary before you qualify. It’s stupid.
Rolled over? The company I work for allows up to 10 sick days a year (paid too), but they don’t roll over annually, so each January 1st, you’re back at 10. They’d never expect us to use any of our 4 weeks vacation as a sick day. That’s just insanity.

This is how it goes. Each month we contract employees at this establishment earn 3.28 sick days. By the end of the year fiscal year, we have earned about 5 days worth of sick time in total. However, at the end of the fiscal year, we start at zero again. Use it or lose it is right.
So, if you are sick or have surgery in February, you are covered because you have sick time banked up. If you have surgery or are sick in April or May, you are fucked because you don’t have any fucking sick time.

I think OP meant that now they are in a new fiscal year and that whatever sick days OP was entitled to in the previous fiscal year went poof! But even then, there should be at least 1 day you are entitled to for this month??? I guess OP’s option is to use the vacation carry-over, although that’s kind of sucky too.
