As Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis advised, in his famous Whitney v. California opinion in 1927, “If there be time to expose through discussion the falsehood and fallacies, to avert the evil by the processes of education, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence.”
Why ban him from entry? Why not show up outside his show with your voice and a sign? Protest the shit out of this fucker.
But no – some (most?) Canadians seem content to ban speech they find offensive instead. That, I find truly frightening and much more disgusting than this vile POS. —Michael Murphy

  1. Can’t say I have much of an opinion as usual, just a counterpoint. If this fellow was to speak in Toronto how would someone from say Halifax, Victoria, or Iqaluit attend to protest the shit of this fucker?

  2. Who is Julian Blanc?

(Avatar #72: “THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION, 1914-1919”)

    A pleasure as always.

    Cheerio!

  3. I’m with you, Michael. For all too many “Freedom of Speech” does not extend beyond topics that they agree with, a hypocrisy enjoyed all across the political spectrum. So, when I encounter something that I find truly beneath contempt , like allowing moronic, toxic gasbags like George Galloway or David Irving into Canada, or the two arrogant little uni-activists who disrupted a Remembrance Day service in Toronto a couple of years ago – my gut check is simple. If my immediate emotional reaction is to silence them, then my “sober second thought” has to be – let them spew their bile into the bright light of day and be judged publicly for what they are.
And hope that someday I’m allowed 15 minutes of quality time alone in a locked room with them >; )
    It’s tough.

By the way. George Galloway, terrorist cheerleader and Islamo-fascist apologist was initially banned from entering Canada in 2009, but that was rescinded a year later. David Irving, Holocaust denier and historical revisionist slug, was banned from entering Canada, did so illegally and was forcibly deported in 1992. His ban remains in effect today.
So, in the world of deplorable opinions, some are clearly more equal than others, which makes it very difficult indeed to take that Voltairean stance so beloved by Libertarians.
    I’ll repeat myself; it’s tough.

  4. “Unlike many democracies, freedom of speech in Canada is not protected, and is not absolute; Section 1 of the Charter allows the government to pass laws that limit free expression so long as the limits are reasonable and can be justified”

“Hate speech is, outside the law, speech that attacks a person or group on the basis of attributes such as gender, ethnic origin, religion, race, disability, or sexual orientation.

In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or intimidates a protected individual or group.”

“In Canada, advocating genocide or inciting hatred against any “identifiable group” is an indictable offence under the Criminal Code of Canada with maximum prison terms of two to fourteen years.”

“Hate speech laws in Canada include provisions in the Criminal Code of Canada, provisions in the Human Rights Act and in other federal legislation, and statutory provisions in each of Canada’s ten provinces and three territories. The Criminal Code prohibits “hate propaganda.”

The Canadian Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination on various grounds, and forbids the posting of hateful or contemptuous messages on the Internet. Legislation in the provinces and territories prohibits discrimination on the same grounds as Canada’s Human Rights Act in matters of provincial or territorial concern such as employment and accommodation.”

Freedom of speech was established in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution in 1791 along with freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and “the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

Freedom of speech was not created so you could stand on stage and teach other male-identifying people how to harass, intimidate, and abuse others.

  5. I’d like people to say whatever they like. It gives the rest of us the chance to see what idiots they are, rather than driving it all underground.

  6. It takes movement both on the right and the left in order to have movement down the centre. Even after the national cleansings, there are still many, many things that I find utterly offensive and unappealing in Life; so I IGNORE it, as I would some crazy-ass anti-fracking loopy-lou…
