Shoptalk has learned from one of our intrepid mall-walking reporters that a number of Halifax Shopping Centre (7001 Mumford Road) retailers are shutting their doors, with today being the final day of a series of end-of-lease sales.

Athletes World, West 49, Susie Shier and Fairweather on the main floor are all closing, along with Stitches upstairs.

A staffer at one of these stores said the mall is “going high-end,” with new stores opening soon including Forever21, Aeropostale and Victoria’s Secret.

  1. Dear Cranky,

    A) We don’t assume our readers keep up with other news sources in the city, so are happy to inform. Staffers at said retailers must have had instructions, because we got the same quote. That happens.

    B) Today is the last day of the sales: useful to anyone who didn’t already know and has time and inclination to get down there before 9pm.

    C) With our mandate being local business, we generally don’t cover the chain stores. Now and again we’ll check in when we think readers might have an interest. So enjoy! Or, if you find our distinguished daily a more reliable source for your Victoria’s Secret opening deets, we understand your needs.

  2. Ha ha, I was just pulling your chain(heh), if I had to choose between a daily or The Coast it’d be you folks.

You’d think they’d pick a better soundbite to feed their workers than ‘going high-end’ but I guess they want to start their assault on SGR from the get go.

  3. ha ha ha i love the “high-end” comment – Forever 21 is definitely not “high-end”, none of the shop mentioned is high end.

  4. “High-end” as in American and more expensive. The mall is taking out the Canadian stores with their low prices, and bringing in American retailers with higher prices. I work(ed) at one of the stores being effected by this massive change…. it’s ridiculous.

  5. SAD-
If that is true, then Reitmans and Smart Set should also be going. They both are owned by the same Canadian company. Haven’t heard anything about them being kicked out. But, it’s early days, yet, so it still may happen.

But, as for the “going high end” comment by an employee, remember, this is someone that is likely going to be out of a job, and may simply be disgruntled and throwing out comments that have no basis in fact. I’d be more inclined to ask the mall’s property managers what plans there are for a price range sort of shopping centre. Not that they’ll answer, but they’d still be the ones to ask.Not someone who got their info from another employee, who probably heard it from another mall employee, etc. Until stores like Payless, Ardene, Showcase and Dollarama get booted, then the “high end” moniker just doesn’t hold up.

  6. I’m pleased to see “high end” stores arriving in Halifax, especially in this location. The “clients” in city housing, coincidentally just located a grab and dash away from the shopping centre, will now be able to steal clothing more in keeping with their taxpayer funded lifestyle.
Say what you will about American stores/retailers, but they do seem to get better bang for their dollar – namely Lands End, name 1 Canadian retailer in the same quality range and price?

  7. This stuff is definitely not “high-end” when I saw that term I expected them to be announcing Chanel and Louis Vuitton. However, I cannot wait to have more American stores arriving such as Sephora and Vic Secret. We are so deprived of good shopping here! Canadian stores suck.

  8. Odd that La Senza didn’t have some sort of deal to not have another lingerie store (Victoria’s Secret) in the mall as they themselves have 2 shop fronts there.

  9. I left a message with the mall managers. Was told all the communications people were away for a week so no one could answer my questions.

  10. La Senza is owned by Victoria’s Secret so I wonder if VS will have a stand-alone store, or just take over La Senza’s space.

Other stores that I heard may be opening are Urban Outfitters, Hollister, and Abercrombie & Fitch as well as Sephora.

I think Sephora has been confirmed by the company

  11. Does anyone know when these stores are opening? I’m going to Halifax this summer, and I’d love to be able to go to Forever21. (:

  12. A&F is not coming, just Holliter……that is owned by the A&F company, they say mid August, Sephora is August 12th, signs have been up for a while now 😀

  13. Has there been any update on if/when Victoria’s Secret is arriving? I’d assume that they’d want to be in by Christmas, but haven’t heard a peep about it.

  14. Yes, development updates on Forever 21 and Victoria’s Secret ? This is really the last published news on it.

  15. Reporter jumped the gun here, no evidence that Victoria’s Secret or Forever 21 were ever going to open.
