Wednesday morning I was shopping at Dollarama in Halifax Shopping Center. I wandered around, not particularly alert. I don’t know what prevented me from trampling on the unattended toddler in my path, since he was completely hidden from my sight by my basket full of cheap chinese tchotchkes. That metal basket would have smoked the little tyke right in the head if something hadn’t alerted me to his presence. I guess I shouldn’t say he was completely unattended. His mother was a few feet away, deep in contemplation over the differences between two nearly identical pieces of dollar store crap. “Oh my heavens!” I gasped. “I almost walked right into him!” The mother’s response? Was to scowl at me as if it was MY responsibility to be aware of her child’s whereabouts. She continued to give me the hairy eyeball as I waited for her to move the child out of my path so I could proceed, then finally sighed at me and pulled him out of the way.

I keep playing the scenario over in my head, and I keep coming up with the same answer: WTF, lady? WTF? I mean, I like kids. And I’m all for the “it takes a village” philosophy of parenting. But for christ’s sake, people! You can’t wander around assuming other people are going to take responsibilty for making sure your kid doesn’t get hurt. Wake the fuck up! The world is not your nanny.

Half Asleep (but still more alert than you)

  1. People dont seem to be responsible for their kids anymore but they have no problem spending that monthly cheque.

  3. I am curious about the assumption that the inattentive mother was on welfare, or fat for that matter. I’ve seen plenty of apparently well-heeled moms who seem to think the whole world should go out of its way to accomodate them and their little cherubs. Financial stability does not a good parent make.

  4. So if the OP did smack the kid with her basket it would have been the mothers fault ?I do think that a parent has a responsibility to keep an eye on her kid but letting them roam a few feet in a store is unreasonable?

  5. I think it was more of an observation, the ‘overweight fat braindead cows’ comment. I would make the same assertions but with less redundancy. Some of these people are not so brilliant, they are fat and I would and mouth-breathers to the description. Fat, well that is clear, no problem seeing that. Brain-dead, as soon as they open there mouth, they have removed the doubt in my mind. Mouth-breathers, that too is obvious. Welfare was not in the OP or the comments that I could see. Is that some sort of between the lines reading I missed or a type of Freudian slip?Either way the bitch should pay more attention to her child and its’ doings. I bet she was one of the mouth-breathing, fat brain-dead regular shoppers. And since were are at calling them as you see them, I think a lot of trampy looking females shop at Wal-Mart. That guy that sings that song with the lyrics ‘I like my women a little on the trashy side’ would like it there. I call it Trampy-Mart or Skank-Mart. Hey, but who am I to judge : )

  6. Bad Guy, I have no idea whether the mother was poor of well off. There is no information in the original bitch to indicate either. But Marie made a comment about “spending the monthly cheque”, so I just wondered why the assumption.

  7. Never mind I just reread your response Miranda, I thought you initiated the welfare possibility and ended the comment saying you thought they were well off.Must… stop… skimming….BOX SOCIAL!

  8. The mother should have paid more attention to her kid. Even if they were a couple feet away they should have known you were that close to their child. What if you were a pedophile?Exactly. One more child abused…You should have told her to watch her kid you dumb cunt. Then look at the kid and tell them that their mom is an idiot that wants them to die, then walk away for a job well done…

  9. I assumed that the cheque she was spending meant the money the government gives you for having children.

  10. The government doesn’t automatically give you money for having children, PaS. You have to qualify for the child tax credit. It depends on your income. Lots of people with kids don’t qualify, especially double income families.
