Is it me or are most people blind to the fact that the cost of food is almost slipping into the realm of hyper-inflation? Packages are shrinking and yet prices stay the same or rise. People seem to take this as a fact of life like death and taxes. What will it take before we have situations here in Canada like those in the Middle East and many other countries because people can’t afford to feed themselves? I know that they spend a much greater portion of their wages than we do on buying food but if food keeps going up and wages aren’t… and this shit that they did with the using corn to make fuel was a real frakking brilliant idea. All I have to say is pass the Soylent Green crackers and smile… —Soylent Green is People!

I just heard that the cigarette makers in Britain are going to reduce a 20 pack to a 19 pack and charge the same price.
What gnaws on my ass grapes is all the fucking excess packaging that is used – just a goddamn waste – do I really need a fucking bag inside a box? Or pounds of plastic around a thumb drive? That’s what eats up a lot of bucks – presentation.
So it’s going to cost fat people even more to plow food into their faces.
There is a lot of freezes on raises at a lot of government jobs as well.
It’s all about what we buy though. Sometimes, just got example. there is a “good brand” of cookies, then a no name brand. But people like the “good brand” of cookies so they pay the extra money for it. If everyone stopped paying the money for it, then what do you think would happen? Either they’d go out of business or lower their prices.
Fresh veggies are expensive.
Its a problem in this province because idiots will accept $10 for a skilled job because the companies know they can charge that with the list of applicants. I never found food prices a problem in calgary because that $10 an hour job was $20 an hour.

The cost of food is tied directly to the price of fossil fuels.
The reason is that industrial agriculture is basically a process of turning fossil fuels (petroleum and natural gas) into crops.
Ten years ago the price of a barrel of crude oil was near $10. In the last few years it’s been as high as $145/barrel to as low as $30/barrel, but overall prices are trending higher and will continue to do so, with fluctuations, as world demand outstrips declining production.
martym mentioned bio fuels and it is true that the diversion of acres of farmland into producing crops for bio fuels is also contributing to the rise in food costs. It is for that reason that most environmentalists don’t support widespread bio fuels projects. Most of these are now being pushed by the big agribusinesses and energy companies.
If they want to tax the shit out of junkfood, I’ll all for it. IMHO, what these fast food chains serve is nothing more than shit and poison mixed with a healthy blend of chicken lips, pig elbows and cow spittle.
Just an aside: Hub-Unit was drooling over this McD’s Angus burger with cheese & bacon advertised on the tube so I looked up the nutritional guide – this little beaut has 810g of fat and 1280g of sodium – now there’s the way to eat your arse to the size of a billboard.
Remember, food is also a commodity, and therfore has a market value.
The fat-cats have been/are buying up all the “futures”, artificially inflating, and setting the world prices.
I noticed recently that single serving bags of chips have gotten 20 grams heavier at the same price. If you’re not into that whole nutrition fad then maybe this is your answer.

you people can go and buy all the high priced shipped in crap you want. i’ll still got to gateway foods in dartmouth, and come away with about 15 full bags of local meat, for half of what you would all pay.
just yesterday, i spent 175 bucks on meats, mostly the sandwich kind, but a lot of full meal meat to. plus chicken, and turkey stuff. and i priced the same type of shit at the two major pains in the ass big name stores. s.s., it would have cost well over 300 bucks, and at the other place, it would have been about the same, 300 bucks.
now the not frilly place in gunsmoke town, i never bother to go there, even back in the day, when they were all over the place. just for fun, look at the price of large uncut bologna, which i love, at those two places, it’s almost 3 bucks a fucking pound. insane or what? this stuff used to be the cheapest fucking meat type thing you could buy, not now, and it is almost local.
and speaking of local, i get my produce from dave’s fruit and veggies, on the same road. so no extra running around to do. just stop at daves first, then less than 2 blocks later, gateway. i fucking love it. i have two huge freezers, just jammed full of shit. and very little packaging.

I go grocery shopping with family members to compare.
No where in the world will be as expensive as Canada.
