What is wrong with this province? Nova Scotia was given the opportunity to host Canada’s Winter Games, and yet several Halifax media sources are reporting less than 35% of Nova Scotians even have an interest in the Games. There are plenty of affordable tickets available for a variety of sports, multiple venues, and great opportunities to see Canada’s athletes compete. Are Nova Scotians just fat and lazy, who would rather sit at home watching Two & a Half Men with a bag of potato chips? —Athletica

Of course not. Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale and “A Bridge Too Far” on DVD get me through the long slough of despond that is February.
I have absolutely no interest in watching sports, that doesn’t mean I’m a couch potato. I like biking, swimming, skating, skiing and so on, (not into team sports so much) but I don’t want to watch other people do it. It’s great that we have more sport facilities and that sport is being promoted and people are getting outside etc. And I have a huge amount of respect for athletes and their competitive athletic endeavors and all that. But personally, no, I have a whole list of things I’d rather be doing than watching a bunch of teenagers race each other or whatever… not to mention that I’m rarely able to make time for my own interests, of which, sport is not one. Or at the very least sport is closer to the bottom of that list. I’ll be going to the concerts, that’s really about it.
Sorry we don’t share the same interest..?
..methinks peeps are all “gamed ” out … I know most west coasters are 🙂
most people don’t care or like sports,so get over it !
Canada Winter Games 2011 – BOOOORING!
I might try to catch some hockey. What other sports do they have? Probably none that interest me. When I have days off after some 12 hour shifts sometimes I actually feel like staying home and taking a nap with the roomie’s cats!
Watching a sport in the stands doesn’t make you any less fat and lazy than a couch potatoe.
Me? I just don’t like watching sports, they’re fucking boring.
K… is it just me, or does anyone else find it completely and ridiculously pathetic that this city can be awarded these games and then host an event like Speed Skating at an outdoor “rink” in the middle of a field. To my knowledge it is still uncovered.
First of all, it’s minus fucking 10 outside. Are there even any indoor facilities in which the athletes can change/put on their skates? Forgive my ignorance as I haven’t actually been to the oval yet. If I were a long track speed skater, however, I would only be remembering these games for the absolutely shitty facility Halifax provided for me to compete my ass off on. The purpose of competition is not only to win but to do your best….. and for these athletes try and make personal bests? How can one have aspirations of breaking their personal best time when they have to contend not only with other skaters but snow and that horrible wind that blows across the Commons?
Again… I am not sure about how other cities have hosted this event or what the facilities are like at the Oval, but it would really be a kick in the face to me if I were an athlete expected to do my best in freezing cold temperature and inclement winter weather. What next? Is our proposed stadium going to be built from the countless beat up and unused sets of bleachers in the province?
How do you spell indifferent?
Two & a Half Men…..the new catholic church show about sexual abuse of alter boys. Hope those priests have their confession app installed.
Sebastian… perhaps the lamest attempt to hijack a thread I have ever seen…. HAHA. I am assuming you simply typed in the wrong window… 😛
since when is skating considered an indoor sport. holy fuck, what would happen if they had held this outdoors from the time it first showed it’s head. indeed, when were all the frozen lakes and ponds and shit, relegated to be indoors? skating and hockey were all played in the open, when first thought of, now people are whining, cause it isn’t inside.
next we’ll hear people wanting alpine ski jumps to be inside, and the temp. to be at 8o for fuck’s sake. do like i’m gonna do, not go, not care, and not get my panties in a bunch.
I don’t believe snow or ice would last very long at 80 degrees Suckster…. *wink, wink*
LS, I think the point is that the weather changes so quickly here that having a contest where people are attempting to not only compete against each other, but also against recorded and current-standing records should be in an environment where no one athlete is at a disadvantage to another.
If I skate @ 1pm and you skate @ 2pm, how do we know the weather will be the same at both times? I could set a new record at 1 stating how excellent the rink conditions are, it rains from 1:30 onward, and you’re shit outta luck now that the environment is drastically altered and you’re getting sprayed in the face through the duration of your event.
“Are there even any indoor facilities in which the athletes can change/put on their skates?”
Yes, they have a designated speed skating trailer where they can keep their equipment, put on their skates etc.
And no one is going to make them compete in freezing weather, or rain, or anything like that. Like all other outdoor sports competitions, the schedule is subject to change pending unfit conditions.
Oh wow, I never knew that sitting at an actual sport event was considered exercise! This whole time I was wasting time going for walks and dancing!
Thanks Zee… that was my point exactly. And thanks for the clarification snoop. It’s only fitting that out here in Halivale they provide, of all things, a trailer for the athletes. I only hope there is plenty of vodka, chicken chips and pepperoni to go around for refreshments.
I’m a doer, not a watcher, but I am going to try to get to long track speed skating (I’d like to see short track but can’t be bothered to drive to wherever it is) but just the shorter distances, the thought of watching someone skate 5km sounds like watching paint dry. Also, judo and boxing, if it works around my work schedule. Which raises another point about attendance/ticket sales: a lot of these events are happening during the work week in the middle of the day…
Ya, what’s up with there being NOTHING next weekend (Feb 19 & 20). I have a friend flying into town, having booked tickets a couple months before schedules came out, now there’s nothing to see but Great Big Sea. Booooooo. What’s wrong with evenings? and have the Turn around day on a Monday? Hellooooo! People can’t get interested if they can’t even go!
I guess since the kids are home from school, they expect people to take time off? 😛
you could come to the doggie expo realmn(teehee) love the big kitteh
The answer to your question, in a word, YES.
I don’t even know what the hell the Canada Games are supposed to be, so… yeah. That being said, yeah, I am kind of lazy. That doesn’t have to do with why I don’t want to see them, though — I genuinely don’t give a flying fuck. But aside from that, I exercise daily, soooo… *Shrugs* I’m still not going to anything the Canada Games has to offer. Haha.
I thought that the Canada Gmes were to help determine the Olympic teams.
I know sports aren’t for everyone, but it’s a lot more exciting to watch ‘real live’ competition, than TV.
I was listening to a US raido station, the anouncer said that “Canada is the best neighbour in the world, except when we’re playing against them in a World Hockey Championsip” 😉
I find that even sports events are so interrupted by ads they are unwatchable. Then the announcers step in like Pierre M. and the whole show is ruined. “WOW Gord, that guy just JUMPED over the boards and got out off the ice like THAT! He skated to the bench, LEAPED over the boards with a special jump and allowed his teammate to get BACK INTO THE play. THAT is why he is a MONSTER!!!”
I like 2-1/2 Men. Probably just a “Keepin Up With Charlie” with Alan dubbed in after, but hey, mindless entertainment that is a touch higher up the food chain than watching the sit-chee-ayshun. Plus the chicks in that show are invariably SMOKIN’, so it is easier to watch than say, Corrie.
actually, two & a half men and potato chips sound dandy.
if anyone watched the nhl this week, it was fight fight fight
And…
It was a crazy week in the NHL – holy man… must be something in the air. (edit: bf tells me as he’s reading over my shoulder that it’s because of the break they were just on, they’re all rested and have lots of energy… he’s a sport nut)
Sorry I missed the doggie expo painey – back to NB to celebrate that ‘ole Saint with the bf. Delicious romantic dinner last night 🙂 Maybe next week’s doggie date? I’m in Halifax fo shiz. Oh, and I felt like I needed a big kitteh to make it through February: RAAAAWR!
