So here we go again another renovation. 39 million dollars to “save” and “renovate” the forum. Does anyone actually think that this is going to stay on budget and the money won’t be blown? This is the Bluenose all over again. We need to really sit down have a rational talk about what is economically best for this city and province, and go that route. Stop letting emotions get in the way of what is the right decision. I’m all for saving and renovating old buildings if it makes sense, but this does not. —More money down the drain

  1. We could turn it into a rec-centre/theme park for “victims” of the “class cleansing” of the North End. Laser Tag for wannabe Craps and Blobs, with the option of refusing to answer Officer Friendly’s inquiries at the end of the match.
    Scavenger hunts for panhandlers and blue-baggers. Bonus points for whomever finds the most glass vials and spent cartridges. Subsidized Bingo so the economically marginalized can feel part of the general non-productive community. Lessons in how to apply spray paint in a smooth even coat, after first scraping the rust or mold off of whatever it is you wish to refurbish. Post-Post-Secondary seminars where anarchists can learn how to frame a coherent argument without using words like “bourgeois”, “oppression”, “fascist” or “class war”.
    If we build it, they will come.

  2. When the government gives a cost on a project, multiply it by three and it may be close to the final cost. It is not a historical building, it is a run down hockey rink that was past it’s prime 30 years ago.

We had the bluenose as you pointed out, there’s the trade centre, the new arena that keeps rearing its ugly head, ship building contracts and spending snow plow removal money because “we didn’t need it the last two years!” All the above mentioned has only happened in the last five years,

    Some rich contractor’s already made the decision for the council… so there’s no rationally looking at anything at all, YES it will go over budget and YES more than 39 mil will be spent on the project. It’s why a lot of people think that big pipe line that Harper wants so bad is a bad idea.. because we ARE going to fuck it up. Same thing with this.

  5. i really don’t think it is wise to cling to an outdated, and most likely very, very inefficient, facility just to appease the nostalgia of a few people. If a new facility was built for even close to the same cost it would be a much better long-term deal.

    Renovating that ugly old building is like putting lipstick on a pig! (And my apologies to all pig lovers, no slight intended.)

  9. Molly — I know you’re not from here, so I think you just don’t get it. The Forum holds a lot of history to a lot of us Nova Scotians and it would be a shame to tear it down.

  10. I don’t believe many of you have considered the site remediation costs of tearing down a building such as the Forum. Tearing down walls, removing foundations, and disturbing soil and building materials is costly. There will likely be asbestos discovered which will have to be contained and removed; lead containing materials as well. And once things are disturbed and discovered they need to be dealt with properly.
    The cost of getting rid of the existing building and returning the site back to a condition where it can accept a new building would likely be upwards of 5 million dollars alone. Any ‘surprises’ would only drive that cost higher.
    Renovating is more resource efficient and less wasteful – and if done right, we would no longer have the old, ugly outdated building that seems to cause so much grief.
    And personally, of all the hockey rinks in this province I’ve seen, the Forum is far from the ugliest – Those who use the buildings seem to care more about the enjoyment they receive from them rather than what they look like.

    I have holey old underwear that has happy memories as well, but memories live in the mind and can never die, so time to make new ones in a new underwear ooops, building. the new generation deserves a chance for their memories too without chunks of the ceiling falling on them.

    The forum is not as ugly as other rinks.

    Memories can be had and retained with or without the forum. Forum-fans do have cameras and brains, correct? GDM said it best. It’s not even an architecturally significant building, it’s more than an eye sore.

    Then again, I have a bias as a result of folks parking on the bike lane next to the forum. Hopefully tearing the thing down would eliminate those jerks.

    Knock that old thing down and put up a decent sports/community centre (that isn’t owned by a university) on the peninsula.
