OK, I have to let this out. So everybody is posting a pic of their favourite cartoon character on everyone’s favourite invasive social network. This “awareness” shit does nothing. Its like the color of your bra thing a few months ago. People post this shit that is actually completely unrelated to the original cause so they look like they care. It does nothing but make them look like a good person. No, they are actually doing fuck all for that cause. Armchair activism. Most never donate a dime or a minute of their time. You know who the leading charitable donor in the world is? Anonymous. You should do something that is right because it is the right thing to do, not to promote yourself as a good person (see everybody’s favourite lemon loving Irish rock star). If you’re not aware that kids get abused or people die of breast cancer or the dozen other things people try to make you “aware” of, then you must be living under a fucking rock on the Goddamn moon. Try dressing up as a cancerous prostate for a month instead. —Anonymous

It’s called “slacktivism” and it pisses me off too.
Oh, it’s totally slack, and I agree. I think anyone with any iota of intelligence knows that by posting some shit in their status they aren’t saving the world. Meanwhile, the cartoon phenomenon was interesting for me, because I loved remembering all those shows from the 80s that I totally forgot about. So I enjoyed the photos, even if the message was a little BS.
I just like Felix the cat so piss off and let me enjoy all the cartoons!
Agree with Ralmn & Snoop. It’s crap but at the same time kinda cool to see them. There should be a donation button and you could see on each person’s page if they donated….like donate a buck to this cause & change your profile pic or something.
You mean there’s an actual reason behind it?
I didn’t care about the reason… I just liked the nostalgia…
wow chill the fuck out OB hahaha fuck you sound like an asshole.
i feel sorry for you o.p., is that all you have to bitch about? see some of the genuine bitches here, before and after this one to get a fucking clue as to life. d-oh.
Yeah, I didn’t pay attention to the meaning, I just wanted to put a pic of Jem up in my profile ^__^
It was kind of fun seeing which cartoon my friends watched when they were little, because they come from all over the world. Mine was T & J 🙂
I’d have just done it if some tool hadn’t have tacked the “it’s for abused children” or whatever armchair activism nonsense to the end of it. Now I won’t do it out of spite for misleading nonsense.
Jem… *shudder*
I went with Jafar….
the cool, monstrous snake version of course.
Yay! I did Jem too! My bros were gargoyles and dark wing duck. heh heh. I really liked it. 🙂 So much stuff I totally forgot about. For some reason I seem to have blocked out my childhood. I do remember sheera though!
Of course the classics were awesome – like bugs bunny…
Oh fuck you, z3!
I guess you’re just not into glamour and glitter and fashion and fame.
OUTRAGEOUS! Truly truly truly outrageous!
this is my only social “network” http://roflrazzi.files.wordpress.com/2009/…
I’ve been amazed by the amount of people whining about this over the past few days. fact of the matter is, a little dialogue on the subject is never a bad thing. it’s brought a serious issue to the forefront of many peoples’ minds, and if it provokes even one person to take further action, it’ll have been worth it. if 100,000 people do nothing, the effort will have been worth it even if one does. it doesn’t even matter if the original intention was to raise awareness, the fact is that’s what it has snowballed into. this is how any movement starts; by a groundswell of reaction.
maybe you need a few days away from “the” site, if it’s such a fucking inconvenience.
But what as it snowballed into? Nothing. The problem is that people don’t take real action (like actually donating time and money) because they feel like they’ve already helped by posting something on facebook because they’ve overestimated the good it will do. You can aware the shit out of breast cancer (yes aware as a verb) but it doesn’t put money in the pockets of researchers. You can’t think an issue better.
And that’s a great attitude by the way bigmeanmotherfucker, “If enough of us post shit on facebook maybe it will cause SOMEONE ELSE to actually do something that will make a difference” Well imagine the difference that would be made if you all put your money where your mouth is.
In an age where donating money is literally a click away, posting on facebook is below the least you can do. I actually think it hurts causes but that’s a whole other dialogue.
Facebook is all about advertising yourself anyway, I’ll bet most people are doing it to make themselves look like a good person rather than doing it because they actually care.
Ugh.. I refuse to participate in “slacktivism”. People feel like they’re doing something for the “cause” when really they’re not doing anything. I’ve lost respect for a few friends because of it.
I suppose you’re going to pick on the little yellow military or pink cancer ribbons next? they do absolutely nothing to fix anything or solve any problems, just like the duck tales picture I put up as my profile picture will do nothing to help a child abuse victim. arent all these just a form of advertising?
The whole slacktivism thing irritates me too. Nobody is helping anything by putting up a cartoon picture or by posting where they keep their purse. And then I get people getting mad at me because I don’t want to participate. wtf.
If you don’t want to participate then don’t! Sit on your high horse and keep looking down on everyone, that is OKAY to do as well. Or come to a site like this and “Bitch” about it. Although you could have spent the time you used bitching to do something constructive and help a cause, but who’s calling the kettle black? And how do you know, absolutely without question, that this does not help one iota? Do you have data backing up your slacktivism claims? Or do you just want to continue to appear smarter and better then everyone else? Just wondering, because I’m pretty sure I have heard more about child abuse in the last few days then the last few years, but alas bringing it to the forefront so people discuss the problem is not good enough for you. Maybe we should just give up everything we have and you can tell us which charities to donate too and which charities to serve at so we can use are time in a way you deem useful. And for all those espousing their holier then though mantra, you should probably have to list and detail every charitable thing you have ever done so we can go over your record and judge if it is good enough for us. GET THE FUCK OVER IT. Your probably the same stupide spoiled activist brats that only donate to causes when told too, omg there has like totally been a hurricane or tsunami or something we need to give money NOW! Fuck outta here with that stupid shit. If this is such a bad idea and a waste of time you know what else is? Ranting about how bad of an idea and how much of a waste of time it is! And I didn’t even participate in the fucking thing because I think its pretty dumb myself, but I don’t feel the need to berate other people for doing it, but I do feel the need to berate you, and all others, for freaking the fuck out over nothing….
Ok there are some people who do this for everything, and they are the ones that participate in “slacktivism.” But another reason for this is awareness. Have you ever worn a ribbon for breast cancer, or like yesterday, to commemorate women who have been victims of violence? It’s essentially the same thing. Yes, it might not raise money or change a law or save a child, but it does bring it to the attention of the public in hopes that if they see someone lobbying for a change or asking for donations, they will be open to the idea. There are some people who go overboard (typically the ones who have in their status “97% of you won’t repost this”) but if it is a cause that you believe in, what’s the harm in changing your picture?
I might not have changed the world wearing a red ribbon last week for World AIDS day, but at least when someone asked me what the ribbon was for, I could bring attention to an issue that deserves our respect.

I went on FB and changed my pic to Ducktales. Then I googled where I can donate something online for abused children. The only thing I could find locally was Bryony house for abused women and children. I’m going to donate.

I ‘m not judging anyone – I just feel better by doing it.
Most of my donating is done through a paycheque deduction. That way I just have one big amount to claim at the end of the year.
volunteering time is essential as well, it’s not always about the money❤❤❤the maru 195
You’re very welcome. 🙂
I think the main point of this whole campaign was to raise awareness not cash necessarily…like Movember? Because of Movember, I’m sure at least ONE man went to a get a prostate exam when maybe he wouldn’t have before. Let’s say someone who knows about a child being abused but hasn’t done much about because they’re afraid or something, finally decides to do something about it just because of this silly campaign then I’d say it’s alright :). And it seems a small number have people have donated something, so that’s something too.
