I woke up, checked my email and found out that I was accepted into a programme at school. This is a huge relief and I’m incredibly excited!!!

However, I then learned that I am expected to pay over $5,000 by Friday.

ARE YOU SHITING ME?

Where the fuck am I supposed to come up with that kind of money in 2 days? Are people insane?!

I couldn’t exactly apply for a student loan until I knew whether or not I was going to get into school or not, so now I have to resort to getting a line of credit and putting myself even more in debt. I understand that it’s my fault for applying to school so late and getting waitlisted, but seriously, this is asking way too much!

These last 2 years of college are going to have me in debt forever!

Since when did community college become so expensive? Over $10,000 for a programme? Holy fucking hell!

Nova Scotia’s tuition rates are fucking ridiculous. Something needs to be done.

broke.

  1. I assume you knew what your program was going to cost BEFORE you enrolled? Good life lesson for the kids – when you buy something people expect you to pay for itjust tell them you’re waiting for your loan, they are used to waiting for student loans to come through.

  3. Actually, you can apply for student loans before you know if you’re in or not. In order to get the money you’ve applied for, you need proof that you actually got in. If you call the school and explain your situation, they’re usually pretty decent….usually.

  4. If you do what you’re planning to, pay your line of credit off the instant the first installment of your loan comes in and you’ll be doing yourself a huge favour.

  5. The community college is really good for deferring payments of programs if you’re waiting for a loan. Most schools want your money, so they’ll do anything to keep you there once you’ve been accepted.

  7. Thats just the way it is these days. I spent 2 years in college, didn’t drop out of anything and still ended up with a $55k debt. That’s the idea of north american economy, if you are in debt your whole life you can be easily controlled.

  8. You applied and didn’t have a dime to your name. You don’t deserve to go to school if you are that stupid. And you can still apply for Student Loans and the college will defer your tuition payment until your loans come through. Many people seeking post secondary school work and actually save money well before being accepted into a program.

  9. I did find it odd that not even a fraction of the money was saved up either…*shrug*Different strokes, looks like he needs to take up economics and finance as well…

  10. Not everyone has the option to save money for education…some people start working at the age of 13 to help support their family. Some kids don’t have support or anywhere to live for free while saving money therefor all of their earnings go towards bills. Some people want to get off of welfare and get an education….good luck staying on welfare and trying to save money for education. Oh and what about those who come from small towns where there is no part-time jobs (or very few) to get while in high school.I’m sorry, but saying someone doesn’t deserve to go to school or calling them stupid because they have to rely solely on loans is ignorant and rude. And Gimpy, coming from the 3rd world surely you would understand….oh no that’s right, your past has left you with an empty space where their may have once been a heart.

  11. College is a privillage not a right. If you can’t afford it then it’s not ment for you. Rather than build debt then work as an apprentice and educate yourself. Build up your knowledge and then hustle a lesson. The majority of those people ahead of you didn’t go go college, especially if they are older.Bill Gates is a dropout. Kanye West is a dropout, George W Bush is a graduate, not all it is cracked up to be…

  12. Let me explain something to you Gimpy, here in the developed world most of us believe in equal opportunity for all no matter what family your born into. College is a privillage that, if you work hard, and earn the grades to be there, our government will help you. It’s a bitch to pay back, and if you don’t, they can fuck up your life, but student loans were created for a reason. Not because the only people meant to be there can afford it! Give your head a shake!

  13. I agree that college/uni is a privilege, I strongly disagree that: “If you can’t afford it then it’s not ment for you.” Does that mean that only rich people should become educated? The poor people should “hustle” their way to the top, using their only their street cred to pull up their boot straps. Blah, blah, blah….I know, it sounds more dramatic that way. But that’s what student loans are for; many of us have to get one, poor or not. Don’t use it as an excuse not to study.

  14. In Gimpyland only the rich are educated and involved in policy-making while the poor sods who can’t afford to go to college get to clean up after them – as long as everyone knows their place, right? Darwinism in this merry land has evolved to the survival of the richest. And you’re using George Bush as an example of a graduate? He’s a prime example of what happens when education is a privilege. Kanye West enrolled in college but dropped out because he got lucky, and Bill Gates dropped out of school because he was presented with a business opportunity and because he wasn’t certain about a study plan – the point is they both had the opportunity to go to college even if they didn’t graduate.Everyone has a right to go to college regardless of their monetary situation.

  15. That’s bullshit, you don’t believe in equal oppertunity, you believe in band-aiding the situation. What sense does it make to go someplace to bring yourself into 50K debt only to make a salary of 40K? That’s a lesson in stupid and is in fact sissiphian in endevor. College/University is NOT a right. Just like driving is not a right, or Tim Hortons is not a right. It is a priviladge that you use to expand your prospects. Meaning that your rights end once you are given choice. You are FORCED to have an education. In fact there is a group of bounty hunters called truancy officers that make sure you are in school. After 18, the average age of graduation you are considered an adult and the right of school can be abscounded whether you are close to graduating or not. If you cannot afford the right then it isn’t for you and you have to go a different way. If I want a car, I have to ask myself can I afford the envestment and can I afford the payments. If I can’t afford it I sacrifice it in the cost of transportation to get to and from work. The alternative is to move closer to work where is is vastly more expensive. Same with college you balance the cost of the education against the income you lost persuing the priviladge against the reward you will receive. In this city, are there that many jobs that would warrent the debt versus the reward? Depends on your field. But in any event unless you are making SUBSTANTIALLY more min wage almost gives you the same amount as middle class in take home money after the tax man ask you to render onto ceasar what belongs to ceasar.Student loans were created as a way to ensure that you remain trapped in your situation. Where can you go if you owe that providence 50k? Nowhere untill you can pay that off. And you better believe they will get their money by hook or by crook because you are educated now so you have NO excuse for not having a job. It is a tool used for control. If you lend someone enough money, you OWN their ass. It’s the same game that is played on the street only they are ‘legit’.

  16. Student loans are a joke. I somewhat agree that there’s actually no happy medium in this education situation. I’m a student. I applied for a student loan while having a part-time job making $10,000 a year. My rent was $700 a month, which adds up to $8400. Take that away from $10,000, and student loans said that I was making enough money to pay my bill and my tuition out of that’s remaining. My tuition was $2600 a year. I have no idea who taught them math, but i’d like to teach their math teacher a lesson or 2 on how to count face punches! Luckily I spoke to NSCC about it and their accounting department allowed me to take that program part-time and, work full-time, and pay them in monthly payments. Fuck student loans. Also piece of advise to any students out there. I guess I was never advised of this before but there’s a government program available out there called Training Skills and development. It’s put aside for people who would like to get ahead in life. It’s not advertised so you’ll have to do some probing. You have to be completely jobless and illegible for EI to qualify. Check it out, it might be the answer to your problems. Only if I know about it while I was going to school. I would have gotten myself fired and went on that program. They will pay half your tuition and will pay you travel allowance, which is actually seperate from your living allowance.

  17. My point is that IF you want to go to post-secondary school, you play the game like everyone else….meaning: get a student loan. I don’t buy the idea that “I can’t afford it, so I might as well stay on welfare”; most people can qualify, it just takes a little wrangling. It’s not easy, and yeah, the bank takes a big juicy bite out of your ass. But hopefully, it’ll give you the ability to get out of the welfare hamster wheel, or the drudgery of the working poor. Or, you could just continue to tell yourself that ‘Kanye West got lucky without an education and I can too, by golly’. Never mind that he happens be the type to fit a certain marketing brand, (I hesitate to say that he has talent because I’m not overly familiar with his music…but maybe he’s a genius at what he does?) obviously good at ‘hustling’ and selling his image, PLUS he got a lucky break. Meantime, there’s a whole bunch of Kanye wannabes wasting their lives in poverty, when they could be accomplishing something constructive and meaningful if given an opportunity. If you’re not interested in uni or college, than of course there are other opportunities out there. But the OP stated that s/he was “incredibly excited”, so it sounds to me like it’s something that s/he REALLY wants to do.

  18. I think student loans work well if what you’re taking will lead to jobs that will pay it back, like Engineering, science, some trade, etc. Huge student loans that go towards some esoteric subject that isn’t good for anything outside of academia is pretty stupid.Although I’m also of the opinion that the govt should subsidize some of the critical trades more heavily, maybe by providing a tax break towards the portion of an apprentices salary for companies. That’s where a lot of people in tradeschools are having a hard time, finding somewhere to apprentice.
