and while i’m at it (bitching that is, oh the joy), what’s with all the GREEDY landlords and management companies gouging tenants in this city?? halifax isn’t even in the same league as world-class cities like toronto or vancouver, at least in terms of work, wages, public transit, amenities and so on… yet, the cost of living here, particularly renting a shithole apartment, is only moderately less. for example, a chintzy south-end bachelor for $685! are these greedy bastards out of their minds?!

hey landlords… show some decency and get a conscience for fucksake! basically, you’re STEALING from people.

oh yeah, Paramount Management, aka The Lawen’s, you mofos are pure fucking evil.

  1. They can raise the rent whatever, whenever here. Its fucked. No real enforcable rent control, no standards set. Landlords here are able to run free. Many provinces have a set thing where you cant raise the rent more than 3%-7% annually, that makes shit livable. It is brutal to see one tennant pay $500, then move out and the apartment then costs $650 because (that unnamed company with the blue awnings everywhere) cleaned up the apartment a little. WHile i agree they did invest, it makes living in that area out of price with the neighboohood

  2. And this is why I said “fuck you” to landlords/megacorps over a year ago! The apartment building was bought by the “blue group” and a note was slipped under my door that rent was going up 200/mth.Homie: Are you at all surprised that NS doesn’t have a standard? Especially one to help the residents? Seems to me “regulating” something like rent increases is more in line with their skills than gas or even dairy (which pisses me off, over $7 for 4 L of milk?? And pop can be 30 cents/L………..)

  3. In ontario it took an agency that stands up for tennants to get with the Mike Harris government to revamp the Act there. It was then that tribunals became mandatory and landlords lost the power to act first, then go to court.

  5. They unfortunately raise the rent however much they want. BUT, they have to give you three months notice of the anniversay date of your lease AND the notice has to be given to you in person or by registered mail, otherwise they have not given the notice properly and therefore cannot raise your rent!!

  6. KK is speaking truth… ask anyone you know this question…. if they dont give you notice, where do you go to report this?most dont know here and just take it in the ass.

  7. Property management companies are borne straight out of Satan’s sphincter. My parents are seniors in their mid 60’s, and have rented the same semi in Dartmouth for almost 33 years. The previous landlord sold the semi (both sides) last year to a property management company, mostly due to the fact that he was older than dirt and didn’t have the ability to keep up the maintenance anymore. My parents were paying $635/month with absolutely NOTHING included in the rent. They pay oil (budgeted for $260/month), power (budgeted for $48/month), hot water (heated by oil), city water…they mow the grass, shovel the driveway…hell, they even pay for the lease on the hot water tank, and paid for all 4 of the appliances over the 33 years! So…exit previous landlord, and in comes the property management company. They take one look at what my parents were paying for the rent, and said, “Oh, that will need to be increased.”. After hemming and hawing, they allowed my parents to keep the $635/month for the first year…but forced them to sign a LEASE for the first time ever. My parents are, in the words of the previous landlord, the “best tenants ever”…but this had no bearing on anything. That was last November. My mother informs me a few weeks ago that they got the notice from the new slumlord…err, landlord…about the upcoming rent increase. They will be paying $850/month as of Nov. 1…and still with absolutely nothing included, they will still be responsible to fix appliances if they break down because they own them, and they still have to maintain the property themselves. Makes me wonder what exactly they’re paying rent for, other than the roof over their heads. The area they live in has gone down hill over the last 10 years, but my parents can’t afford a move. Dad’s on disability and a clawed back military pension, mum’s working part time to keep up with the bills. It makes me SICK and SO angry to see the way they are being treated…and I wish I had been there when they were forced to sign this lease, but my mum doesn’t like to stir the pot and cause a fuss…which is why she didn’t tell me about it for almost 6 months. Now I’m all angry again…grrr….
