one definition of IRONY from merriam websters online: the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning

from the princess bride: “you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

now you know what it means – don’t use words if you don’t know what they mean. idiot.

  1. My pet peeve is the way people misuse the expression, “to beg the question”. People use it as hoity toity way of saying “to raise the question”. For example: “Rodney MacDonald’s apparent ignorance of the ATV purchase begs the question, just who is in control of the public purse.”That circumstance may ask that question. It may imply that question. It may provoke that question. But it emphatically does not beg the question. To beg the question is something entirely different. Even journalists, who of all people should know better, are guilty of this logical blasphemy. It makes me want to stab them in the eye with a red pen.*ahem*/pedantry

  2. More definitions of irony:”Meeting the man of my dreams. Then meeting his bYOOtiful wife”or”Black fly in your chardonnay”PS I heart Miranda. And not in an ironic way.

  3. Yeah this is common, but I don’t mind it. The real meaning of “begging a question” is essentially “using a circular argument”, isn’t it? But I never understood what meaning the word “beg” has in this context…

  4. One “begs” the question in the sense that one appeals to the question to prove itself.

  5. Ahhhhh now that makes more sense…like “you begged the (anthropomorphized) question to provide its own answer”

  6. ps, I <3 you to qwerty. You know what's funny? I only just yesterday clued in to the origin of your name. I was staring at a blackberry, and the light bulb went on over my head...uh oh. Here we go off topic. Miles, you keep a lookout for the On-Topic Police.

  7. Now jammie I would have to say that was a rather gratuitous use of the word anthropomorphized…

  8. Floyd I think your use of the word “gratuitous” is completely unnecessary and contrived only to impress Miranda.*puff*

  9. I just looked up some random big words… nimiety, litotes, weltanschauung, superannuated, and feuilleton.Everyone impressed now? No? I can look up some more…And yes, The Bad Guy loves elipses…
