Over the last twenty odd years, I’ve lived in London, Dubai, Istanbul, Paris, and Vancouver. All world class cities, in their own way. And having lived in each of these world class cities for between two and five years, I can say with authority that Halifax is not among them. Nor is it ever likely to be.

I was born here. I left after high school to go to university in Ontario. Then I went abroad. I’ve been back a couple of times a year since then, and about three years ago I came back to stay. And I have this to say to all you people bleating about how Halifax isn’t a “world class city”: Fuck Off.

If you want to live in a “world class city”, there are hundreds to choose from. Move to one. I came back here because I was tired of the world class city shit. Tired of the noise, pollution, pretension, indifference, crime, arrogance, and nastiness. Yes, big cities have a lot to offer. But there is a place in the world for small provincial cities like Halifax. Some people don’t want to live in “world class cities”, and thank god there are places like Halifax available for us. I love it here, and I love it just the way it is. If you want to live in Toronto, stop bitching about the fact that Halifax isn’t like Toronto and move to Toronto. Don’t try to turn my home into something I came here to get away from.

  1. gotta love the selfish attitude here. So for all those that have always been here and want the city to evolve, we should tell them to fuck off, because its YOUR city, and you dont want change. We should also create a population control as well, as you clearly dont want the numbers to increase. Hey, to all those that are bored of what’s here, dont bother building anything, that might be new and affect the OP. I was hoping that maybe we could get a new arena so we can get big concerts here, but that clearly doesnt fit your plans. To Mr self centered op:people that were here before you were born, would say the city has grown and is evolving and they are quite happy. If you dont like that it will grow and modernize, then you should truck yourself to the country where things dont change.

  2. Hear fucking hear! Finally somebody acknowledging that there is a place in the world for small cities. Every city doesn’t have to aspire to “world class” status. And Homie, fuck off and shut up for a minute. There’s a big difference between a city “evolving” and having a bunch of know it all malcontents like you and Coyotex trying to “fix” it according to your narrow Upper Canadian vision of what a city should be like.

  3. Amen Miranda, and to the OP…wasn’t sure where he/she was going with the post at first, but I ended up in agreement.

  4. Bravo. Big cities are nice to visit but thats where it ends? Want to see REM? Go to Boston.

  5. Amen.im sick of hearing about how halifax needs to ‘get with the times’. fuck off, what do we need to evolve on? why does everything have ot get bigger and flashier for some people in the name of advancement? will you finally be satisfied when Halifax looks like the Jetsons? and my opinions aside, the OP didn’t say anything to the affect of not building anything new, they were just making the point that Halifax is a simple, traditional place and rapid change just wouldnt suit our culture. so homie, why dont you pull your head and your own dick out of our ass once in a while and actually read the post instead of launching into an exhaustive tirade about how self centered the OP is for not sharing your fucked up sense of values. really, if you hate it so much here, get the fuck out and instantly make Halifax a more positive place for all. I swear im getting a brain aneurism from reading your posts. honestly, my first few days posting, i found you intelligent and informative, but your posts are basically just self-gratifying, redundant dogshit. it’s like the intellectual equivalent to jerking off for you

  6. anony…..perhaps you should read my posts. I never said that i dont like it here. I love the fact that not a fuckin thing goes on here. Well, nothing that you cant see at least every other day. The fact that people here think shit is goin on and it really isnt. I have said many many times, that i am tired of the big city life. I lived in some cities that dwarf this village ( to which there is many of idiots that have been here thier entire lives ) . I just explain to those that think there is nothing to do, that these people here wont change. Many want to think of themselves in a world class city, when in fact the political structure is fucked up beyond repair (see, entire board of trustees getting fired or 6 months fighting over a cat by law). I love the fucked up nature of these people. It is entertainment. To the locals, it might seem as though i am poking fun at yall. In fact, i love it that a site like this and the retardedness of this province are what make me want to stay. The fast lane, high energy area i am from isnt necessarily better, its just different. Hey, living in a town of 3000 people has its entertainment value. However, all that being said, you have to realize that some people here are like the OP and want things to be the same. However, there are many here that want change. It took vision for someone to put them ugly twin buildings by the casino. You could argue they dont belong. I love it here. For all the stupidity and all the wonderful people and sights i can see.So anony…. you can royally suck my ass……. and i can say that out here…… because i love halifax

  7. oh to cranky, i might not want to see boston..but there seems to be overwhelming support to see things like the Rolling Stones, the Eagles, U2 and the likes of them. Bob Dylan was JAMMMED packed and sold out. Many people that live here would disagree with you, and the rolling stones, and bob dylan show this. Hell Nas is sold out, and the blue man group is sold out. This city is CRAVING for big city things and the numbers at the events in recent past show this. However, i get where you are coming from that you dont want new venues and that you are satisfied with the crumbling structures that you have. It’s the parting with your favorite lazyboy chair thing. Hey, i get yall. I am not fighting with ya on this, that is why i moved here. Its just those that claim this city is big league and something great….. it isnt. Its slow. I like that.

  8. I want to know who are all the people bleating that Halifax is a world class city? Surely no one is that naive or sheltered. Surely. I think the OP is making this up.Certainly, plenty are wishing the city would grow and develop and become something more than it currently is. But world class? That’s completely ludicrous. Halifax is far too small and provincial to meet any of the criteria to be considered as a world city. No one would even try. Surely. These are our “scores” most of the criteria one would use to label a city as a world city:- A population of under 400,000 – the world has a sum total of one city so small that *might* be considered world class, and that’s Venice. No comparison. – Little real diversity / multiculturalism. There are not large immigrant communities.- Not known internationally by it’s one name. If you have to describe exactly where it is and point it out out on a map, and still get blank stares, it ain’t world class.- Zero influence on world or even national affairs. News networks do not say “now let’s check in with our International Bureau in Halifax” haha- No significant or powerful media companies- Zero major financial institutions headquartered here – Zero economic impact or influence on the national scale let alone the global scale. – Few if any notable, large corporations are based here- Zero major cultural or artistic influence (yes, there are lots of artsy indie type individuals, but there is no nationally or internationally recognized art scene.)- A small music scene that occasionally get recognized outside our own borders – but certainly not on a consistent, world scale.- Zero original theatre.- Zero symphony, opera, or dance companies that would be renowned outside of Nova Scotia.- Zero fashion scene.- Zero major sports.- There are universities, but I don’t think any are internationally renowned.- Zero mass multi-mode public transit. – We do have an international airport, but it not a major global node- We do have a good telecommunications infrastructure

  9. Homie, I think you ARE that retarded guy that rides around on the bus trashing the maritimes to anyone stupid enough to make eye contact. Practically everyone in Halifax knows who I’m talking about, and goes out of their way to avoid sitting near him. We “locals” don’t think you’re poking fun at us, dude. We “locals” just think you’re a fucking idiot.

  10. Direct quote from the post, Jammie: And I have this to say to all you people bleating about how Halifax ISN’T a “world class city”: Fuck Off.(emphasis mine)

  11. Another direct quote from the post, Jammie:I can say with authority that Halifax is not among them. Nor is it ever likely to be. It’s early, Jammie. Have another cup of coffee.

  12. Hey Miranda, you condescending piece of shit, how about you have another cup of coffee and read *my* post?I asked WHO the OP claims is “bleating” about Hali being world class. I did NOT say the OP claimed it is. I understood the OP quite well.

  13. My point was, why even bring the phrase “world class” into it, because surely no one is silly enough to make that claim.

  14. Nobody is bleating about hali being world class, you idiot. They are bleating about it NOT being world class. Because they WANT it to be world class. And it’s NOT.

  15. wow miranda…. your reading skills are incredible. I said i like it here you stunned fuck.I like the slowness. I like the fucked up ways here. But it is naive to think that this city isnt trying to be world class. They are trying to lure world events here. Someone thought we were world class enough to host the WORLD championships of hockey. Someone thought we were WORLD class enough to want to bid for other countries to come here and partake inthe Commonwealth games.People think we are WORLD class enough to include us as a stop for cruise ships on a world tour. People might think this is a world class city and will lure guests to it by building a new convention center. And oh, i could care less who you think i am

  16. “that retarded guy that rides around on the bus trashing the maritimes”Is he the one who always has like 3 bags of used books, and plans on going to Las Vegas to be a chef? Because he needs at least a million dollars a year to raise a family.

  17. I’m the OP. Jammie, I reread my post 20 times, and I can’t figure out where you got the idea I suggested anyone thinks Halifax IS a world class city. The people I refer to as “bleating” are the people who say, “If only we had a, b, and c, (and e, and f, and g…) Halifax COULD BE a world class city.” They think Halifax can, and should, strive to be a “world class city”. I think they’re wrong. I think the world has quite enough world class cities. I think Halifax should strive to be the best city it can be, without measuring itself against the yardstick of Toronto.

  18. lol @ jammie saying the same thing as the OP, but someone that Miranda misconstruing what jammie was saying, has turned this into a pissing contest about who said what.

  19. Actually, Homie, Miranda was absolutely correct. It was Jammie that got it fucked up. I never said there were people who think Halifax is a world class city, and he thought I did say that. He accused me of “making up” something I did not actually say. Miranda quite correctly pointed that out. The only one trying to engage in a pissing contest here is you.

  20. This is like telling people who don’t want change to go off to a cottage somewhere out in the wilderness and live. If you don’t want change, you obviously lead a very sheltered life and refuse advancement. If you don’t think halifax has potential to become a world class city, you’re wrong because we’ve had way too many chances to do that. Since the city is full of sheltered individuals who refuse to change, the city looked, felt, and provided the same things it did 20 years ago. I have no idea how anyone can’t see anything wrong with this. We’re right on the atlantic ocean, anyone coming from the east we’re the first large city they can hit coming to North America. There are other cities that are within the bowls of the continent that provide amazing fish markets, aquariums, zoos, marinas, and they’re no where near an ocean. We’re right there and we have none of it! How come halifax to this day and age doesn’t have a world class fish market or an aquarium? Edmonton does and they’re no where near water. Not to mention they have worse weather than we do. They don’t have spring or fall. They skip those 2 seasons. Why is it possible for people to rent boats and jet skis in AB and you can’t in NS? These are realistic things that can be accomplished, but Halifax refuses to advance. All that’s to do here is sit in a pub and drink. Last night i went out to find something to do, and everywhere i went, i couldn’t get a table or a place to sit, because that’s all there is to do, go and sit in a pud or a cafe. They’re the same to me, they just offer different menus. I have no idea why people still refuse to see that there’s something wrong with us, Halifax, housing the highest amount of bars per capita. That’s just wrong. Honestly, a lot of people around the world are starting to realize that Halifax is the place to get drunk. Nothing else, just drunk. This is not made up stuff. These are true fact based on reports from other papers and media outlets in other areas outside NS!

  21. Coyotex I’d actually like to see some of these fact-filled reports. Can you tell me where I could access them?

  22. The point is that we don’t need/want/have to be a World Class City for people to enjoy it and want to live here. If you want to go to an aquarium, go to Alberta, if you want to see fish, come here and look in the ocean. The people who live in NS and have for a long time don’t care about being a WCC, we’re happy being a small city. It seems like it’s only the people who aren’t from here who come and then complain that we don’t have the things they want. So then go somewhere that does. When I want to see a big band, I go to Montreal. But I know that here in Halifax I can live downtown and not have my entire months salary paying for it. I can go to a bar at midnight and get in without waiting for 2 hours. I regonise people on a daily basis. Tickets to festivals don’t cost $30 per show. When the city gets bigger, cost of living goes up, housing is harder to come by, and taxes go up. And Jammie, I’m pretty sure that Dalhousie is a world renowned university for it’s medical programs and having a teaching hospital.

  23. hey Coyotex, want something to do besides go to a pub? Try exercise. Hfx has great access to beachs, hiking/bike trails, swimming, parkour, kayaking, climbing and almost anything else you can think of. Want to see marine life? Go diving. You can’t rent jet skis here because they are fucking annoying and polluting as shit, thank fuck you can’t rent them here. Just because you are too lazy or unimaginative enough to find something to do but eat, doesn’t mean the rest of us have a problem. Flights are on sale to Edmonton all the time, feel free to go back, enjoy the winter.

  24. coyotex, i agree with a lot of what you are saying, and unlike Homie, you actually make me consider your point instead of instantly grating on my nerves. however, the Halifax tourism season goes from April to late October, and while that target market could so easily be tapped, what happens to a large Zoo or a world class aquarium when tourist season ends? will you go to a Halifax Seaworld every day? or even once a month? no, you would go once, maybe go back every year or two to see if stuff changes. same with a Zoo. we have a gorgeous wildlife park with many things to see, but they cant expand or add anything new because they dont take in enough money. we dont support these things as it is, what kind of sucker would dump a ton of money into something that will need LOTS of financial and physical upkeep all year long, just to take advantage of a 6 month tourist season? and fro working first-hand with the cruise-ship tourists, which make up a gigantic portion of our total tourists that they consider Halifax a spot to stretch thier legs then get back on the ship. they dont like to spend on excessive things here. most of them think a $13 harbour hopper ride is ridiculous. they buy a $1.92 ice cream and wait for their change from $2. they bitch endlessly about how a beavertail costs $5. in order to maintain a large facility, they will have to charge astronomical prices to cover the off-season, which none of our tourists, who are in the middle of a recession, would pay. not to mention, where would you put it? if you put it outside the core of downtown, no one would go because you cant get anywhere outside the city if you dont have a vehicle. there are no large spaces up for grabs right now. and everyone talks about a large sports facility, but how many people would use these? not very many sports teams would be able to come up with the rental fees that they would have to charge to cover the cost of building such a facility. in order to build these grand dream places, they would have to have the type of economy that could support it. we’ve only JUST put minimum wage up to meet the poverty line, yet you expect to be able to sustain things like zoos, aquariums, a giant sportsplex and other things like that? well how about you open up your own Halifax’s Wonderland or something to that effect? because a- you cant afford to, and b- even if you could scrape together enough cash and loans, you would probably get deeper into the research that others have already done, and realize you’d be a moron to spend your money in such a fashion. others have had your same ideas, but when they go to put them into fruition, they realize it just doesnt work. just because some people dont like the vibe here, doesnt mean someone is going to put their money into a stupid business venture. there is a reason that all people want to do here is drink- because getting drunk is cheap.

  25. You keep saying you like it here, Homie, but you say it like someone might say, “hey, some of my best friends are black!” You tell us how backward and fucked up we are, but that’s ok, because you LIKE backward and fucked up. Well, we’re all very touched that you appreciate our backwardness and fucked-upedness, I assure you. But we don’t really need your condescending, self congratulatory approval, so shove it up your ass.

  26. I was going to stay away from this one because I do work in the Tourism industry but the more I am reading the more my face is turning red out of frustration and anger….I guess I am confused…some of you are saying in order for Halifax to be a “world-class” city we need to have big stadiums and sports teams and galleries and museums??What about the fact that we are referred to as some of the nicest heart felt welcoming people in the WORLD…doesn’t that make us world class?? I hear on a daily basis how people come to Halifax and to NS because of the culture and because we are NOT LIKE every other big metropolitian city out there offering the same amusement parks and attractions and the same large galleries…that means we are not world class??I say the people here make Halifax the BEST WORLD CLASS city to live in and I wouldn’t live anywhere else in the world!!

  27. Miranda: 281, Homie: -24.PS Miranda, have I told you lately I LOVE your style on the coast? I LOVE your style on the coast.

  28. Sign me up for Team Jenn!! It’s so true, since when are buildings the ONLY criteria determining the worthiness of a place? I’ve been away from Halifax for 5 years, and I miss something about it every single day. Mind you, the things I miss now, I took utterly for granted while I was living there, but that’s another bitch for another day…

  29. Agree with qwerty re Miranda’s style on the coast… Lately I haven’t as much time to keep up the volume on here.. THANKS a LOT homie… But I do follow certain threads and certain posters…And gotta say what I have seen out of Miranda has been pretty much right on and very well put… even the stuff I dont fully agree with, its always balanced and well thought out… And there’s only one other poster here I could say that about, and that of course is Miles… Its good to have the common sense point of view brought in once in a while, to offset the crap from the posters who obviously have an agenda… Lately there have been two such sources of reason…Keep up the good posting Miranda…

  30. And on the original topic, I have lived away from Halifax three times for average of four years each time… I have either lived in or spent significant non-vacation time on five continents… Cities big and small towns, villages and camps, up close and personal with the people of the planet… People rich, rich, rich or poor, poor, poor… Sure Halifax doesn’t have everything it could have… some extra stuff or attractions here and there would be nice… But when you look at the standard of living that you enjoy just by the virtue of the fact that your are HERE in NS, it makes me truly wonder why there is so much negativity that some of you feel the need to unleash on the city…. Count your blessings assholes!!! I do not like your style on the coast…

  31. Homie -25 You sound like the guy who says, yeah my wife she’s ugly , fat, mean, annoying, AND boring… But those are EXACTLY the reasons I married her… I like that that she smells bad TOO!!!!!And we ALLLL believe you…

  32. OK guys, chill, I see my typo now. I did inadvertently type “is” instead” of “isn’t”. Regardless of that, my whole point was that the concept of discussing whether Halifax is or isn’t world class is completely ludicrous, and I was light-heartedly asking the OP who would even put “Halifax” and “world class” in the same sentence.Miranda was so focussed on picking apart one little phrase in my post, that she seemed to have totally missed the point of the whole post. I don’t know why some of the people on this board have to treat every discussion like a competition. In any case, I totally agree with Don, the OP, even if he also missed my point and threw me the same ‘tude that Miranda did.Halifax is not and never will be a significant player on the world stage, G7 summit aside, and we should stop worrying about trying to be a “big” city and just try to become a nicer, better designed, better resourced, cleaner, etc. etc. small city. It’s a perfectly nice, if a little dull and a lot dirty, place that could be made nicer, less dull, and less dirty with some vision. (And Dalhousie is not world-renowned except possibly among Neuroscience researchers and Marine Biologists, if even those groups. People in other countries do not consider their futures and aspirations and set a life long goal of choosing from amongst Yale, Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge or Dal. They’ve never even heard of Dal.)

  33. floyd, if you grew up in a large city, you can appreciate the slowness of here, sorta like people that move to the country to get away from the congestion.I did the same. I came here, mainly cause i would go nuts in the country. This is plenty slow for me. Its how funny you people get when you are told your city is slow paced and boring. You all fight to prove to people how much there is to do.

  34. gee surprising to see qwerty post about me rather than the topics….. amazing that people find you interesting.i love how people tell others here, that if they want to visit this or go to a concert to see (insert band) then they should go to (insert city), however when bands do come here, the shows are packed. See Bob Dylan and Ozzy. It took someone with a toronto like vision to bring Ozzy out here. Of course those people dont matter and shouldnt be considered real haligonians as concert going is something for big cities right?

  35. homie…its pretty clear that you will never get over your upper Canadian self. Referring to Haligonians as “you people” and using phrases like “toronto like vision” its no wonder people are sick of what you have to say.I like Floyd’s point about the fat wife…even though if you love her your not paying her any complements.I have the same problem with people from Toronto though, I keep telling them I like how they are arrogant cocksuckers but they cant seem to take a fucking complement?

  36. Homie thinks he’s smarter than the rest of us, but he isn’t. (Some) Torontonians think they’re better than us, but they aren’t.What the two have in common is a fundamental insecurity regarding their place in the world. Try telling someone from Toronto that Toronto isn’t a world class city. They’ll go off their nut and supply you with a long, boring list of factoids that they believe support their status. Try telling Homie he doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about. He’ll supply you with a long, boring list of factoids that he believes makes him sound educated and well-informed.

  37. Qwerty you are bang on. By almost any measure, Toronto is in fact a world city, but many of its residents seem to be incredibly insecure about its status, as evidenced by their need to slam smaller places and their residents to make themselves feel “superior”.The odd thing is, I don’t find that people from Canada’s more minor world cities (Montreal and Vancouver) feel the need to do the same thing. Visitors from those cities seem to be able to appreciate smaller cities for what they are. Why don’t they have that same nagging need to put others down as many Torontonians do? (Perhaps because the latter two cities are actually beautiful and full of life, and not just “big and busy” and status-obsessed)

  38. wait a second… what is with you crack smokers thinking i am saying toronto is better? I never once said toronto is better. It is faster and has more things to do, that doesnt mean it is better. Some people there will like it and some wont.It seems you whiners here on this OP have issue with being told that your city is slower. You seem to equate slower with the notion that it sucks. I say you people, because i have pride in the area i am from. I lay claim to that being my home. I am a resident here, my taxes are here, but my roots are my home province (and not toronto assholes)if you really break it down, i moved from toronto to the place i claim as where i was raised (spent over a decade in) was London. Similar population, but it has the vision of building there. If you look, many here want the same things. That is why so many people have been longing to get a CFL sized stadium. That is why Peter Kelly is trying to lure large acts out here (dont ask me why a mayor is involved in concert promotions), that is why many people have been asking for a new convention center so people can come to see how beautiful this city is.I, appreciate that it is slower paced and more boring than toronto. Its weird that many idiots here can accept that some people like that it is slower. They take offense to it being called slower. Look at you people freak out. At no point did i suggest that slower made Halifax inferior to Toronto. Its just different. I can appreciate that.funny, should someone from another city log on and read this OP, it clearly looks like the arrogant ignorant people are the name calling and insulting locals.

  39. by the way…. whining that you are just as good or better than someone, is just as bad as someone that is bragging about themselves. At no point did i claim to be better than anyone. You however qwerty (and a host of others) have made it a point to belittle me, thus elevating yourselves. So if that is you that needs to be doing that…… and me not telling you that i am better than you or even thinking that for that matter, is your problem. You spend more time focusing on me and insulting me, but if anyone from outside read this, how could they come to the conclusion that haligonians are friendly people?

  40. Homie, for the record, I like most of your posts. You tell it like it is. Something fairly foreign to Maritimers, because we’re so “nice” (i.e. passive-aggressive ingratiating-nice-to-your-face-back-stabbers). In your case, I do know exactly what you’re saying. I am in full agreement that while Halifax is a perfectly lovely place in many ways, it is also a bit backward and slow. I was backing qwerty’s post because I do find Torontonians, often, to be awfully insulting, not in the matter-of-fact “Halifax is small and you sort of have to deal with it” kind of way but in a really childish “Ewwwwwwww Halifax, it can’t possibly have ANYTHING going for it” kind of way. I don’t understand their need to be that way. It seems regressive.

  41. jammie, on the same accord of you calling the torontonians arrogant and this and that….sorta the same thing when you hear the haligonians complain about how toronto is this and that. They are doing the exact same thing. Take a look in this OP, they have bashed Toronto and Torontonians. Not all people from there are bad or cocky, but you wouldnt know it by the posts in this thread, as the locals claim to dislike the torontonians. Also, there seems to be some conflicting things going on here. You have the people attacking Torontonians for calling things as they see them. Things are slower here, there is less to do. It appears if anyone says that, they are called cocky, and arrogant and whatever. That seems to be the defense mechanism of the locals. They take offence to these things….. but the wierdness comes, when you see the same people post here, that they dont want all the things that big city people have, they dont want the large stadiums, and rock shows, and shit that takes place in big cities. If you dont want it, how can you get mad when people say its slow and boring here? You cant have it both ways…. apparently here on the Coast, you can

  42. oh and jammie, for the record, there is just as many torontonians that go “ewwww halifax”, as there is haligonians, that say, “toronto, yuck, its so dirty, the people are rude, this and that…. and yadda yadda.” Take a look down some posts, you will see examples of what i mean.

  43. I’m with ya Homie. I totally agree that Maritimers attack outsiders with just as much zest as many outsiders attack small cities. Maritimers are incredibly defensive – like i was saying, I don’t have a problem with someone saying “Halifax is small and there’s not much to do, but you know it’s an OK place to visit…” but this will get many Maritimers worked up into slavering rages. I do have a problem with the snotty types that won’t even acknowledge that there might be a half-decent restaurant or something here and there, because, well, it’s eewww Halifax and it’s so redneck and stupid….(and yes I’ve met a great many of these types.) That would make ANYONE defensive because it’s so ludicrous. And I DO find that I hear this sort of thing from Torontonians quite a lot, but I don’t often hear it from Montrealais or Vancouverites (I personally believe that this is because Van and Montreal are such beautiful, cultured, vibrant cities that their resident can be perfectly confident about their place in the world, and therefore don’t feel the need to lord it over other people. I don’t feel that Torontonians have this luxury because despite all its multiculturalism, their city is rather characterless compared to other big cities.)On the other hand I can’t stand the “Toronto bitch go home” attitude that prevails here either. I’ve posted about this before. There’s a small-minded that makes people react with a lot of hostility to people they think may be richer, more stylish, more worldly, more whatever…we call them shallow and snobbish and rail against them, blaming their attitudes for our reactions even if they are perfectly nice to us, when the problem is really that they make us feel self-conscious about our relative lack of wealth, style, sophistication, or whatever. Bottom line – I think that (many) Haligonians and (many) Torontonians are awfully insecure about their cities and resultantly have huge chips on their shoulders, and I don’t think many Vancouverites or Montrealais suffer from the same thing.

  44. Homie, I don’t think anything in the post can be construed as bashing Toronto or Torontonians. The OP was just making the point that Halifax isn’t Toronto and shouldn’t try to be. The only bashing going on is Homie-bashing, and that is because you just can’t seem to understand how offensive you are. How can you say things like “I love the fucked up nature of these people. It is entertainment”, and “the retardedness of this province are what make me want to stay”, and expect people NOT TO BE OFFENDED? What is wrong with you, man? There is a slower pace of life here. Nobody takes offence to that statement. Most people who live here like that slower pace. If they didn’t, they’d live somewhere else. What people take offence to is outsiders calling it boring, backward, and fucked up. And you have used all those adjectives my friend. You have used them and expected us to take them as compliments. Let me try to explain this one more time. The slower pace of life that we celebrate and defend is not compatible with football stadiums and U2 concerts. It is impossible to have giant amusement parks and olympic class sports arenas, and maintain the laid back way of life that we enjoy. We don’t have the population to support facilities like that. It takes a population of millions of people within a couple hours drive to make those things feasible. I believe that you like it here, Homie, and that you really do appreciate the laid back lifestyle Halifax offers. You just have an extraordinarily tactless way of expressing your appreciation. But the Coyotexes of the world would like to turn Halifax into Toronto East. And we don’t want that.

  45. Coyotex, I’m still interested in reading those “true, fact-based reports” that the only thing to do in Halifax is get drunk. Again, can you tell me where I can access them? Thanks.

  46. uh girls… Coyotex doesn’t actually want to do any of these things… he just wants to be able to COMPLAIN about it…

  47. Agreed Floyd, all I hear is a lot of excuses whenever someone from Halifax says there are interesting things to do. “It’s too far” “It’s too expensive” “I don’t have a car” “I have to drive there” etc, etc. I find it especially funnt that coyoteX is now bitching about not having enough parks, hiking trails, biking trails, beaches to go to. Are you serious?!? We live ON THE OCEAN and NEAR FORSTES AND LAKES. If anyone can’t find something outdoorsy to do within minutes driving, biking and busing of the city, they are definately not trying.

  48. If you’re a boring person, boring will follow you wherever you are. If you’re fun and interesting, you’ll have fun and be involved in whatever you do. We all live in the world we create for ourselves, and if some jackhole blabs nonstop about people not providing him with world class fun times, maybe he should look in the mirror for the answer.

  49. Homie and Jammie, Thank you. I think a lot of Haligonians don’t like it when people give true honest opinions. Also People Are Supid, I suppose you live out your name since i said in the city. I don’t see any climbing hills in Halifax, no kayak rentals which is what i bitched about. This city doesn’t offer motorized and non-motorized watersports you idiot. Yes you can buy them if you want. I don’t want to, I have no space to store it, I SHOULD be able to rent them here in the city without having to have a CAR and DRIVE distance to ST MARGARETS BAY. St Mary;s Boating Club doesn’t rent them anymore because the same company now moved to st margarets bay. Another thing you retard. Show me a clean swimmable beach in the city. Other than Point pleasnt park, that i’m so sick of going to, what other good parks for, actually i don’t count ppp as a good hiking park. I’d love to see some biking trails that you speak of. Also it’s not cheap to get drunk here. Have you been out lately? to the one who said it’s cheap to get drunk here. Toronto and montreal are cheaper. I have yet to pay cover charge at a club in Toronto! I don’t wanna move out of NS due to the ocean and the water. I can’t stand being away from the water. NS is by far the worse city to utilize it’s amazing location!

  50. Just out of curiosity, Coyotex, where would you use these jet ski’s and the like in Halifax? The harbour? You have to leave DT Halifax to do any of that stuff … just like any other city. You can rent kayaks on Lake Banook, there’s a great biking/hiking path at Hemlock Ravine. You just need to get out of your bubble that is downtown Halifax and you’d see all of these.

  51. Coyotex, I don’t know what you’re bitching at me about, I specifically said, we don’t have these things because we don’t feel we need to have them, if you want to go do those things, go somewhere else! A quick google search pops up a number of Kayaking rental places in dartmouth, so shut it, you don’t have to buy one.Martinique Beach, Lawrencetown Beach, Rainbow Haven Beach, Macdonalds Beach, plus a huge amount of swimmable lakes in Darthmouth – the city of lakes – also good for kayaking.

  52. Never mind, PaS. Coyotex thinks POINT PLEASANT PARK is a “clean swimmable beach”. Maybe that’s what’s wrong with him: he’s been swimming at PPP. Dude, you know that’s the HARBOUR, right? Is that also where you’re planning to use this jet-ski that you think you should be able to rent in the city? Halifax Harbour?Buddy, there are literally hundreds of “clean swimmable beaches” in this city. Dartmouth is known as the City of Lakes. You have your choice of beaches you can drive up to (Lake Banook, Albro Lake, Kidston Lake), and secluded beaches you have to park your car and walk 20 minutes through the woods to get to (Suzie Lake, Purcells Pond). All the lakes I mentioned are on bus routes. Shut up, Coyotex. The more you talk, the more you display your ignorance. When’s the last time you even left your apartment, other than to go to work or a bar?
