Hey Web Nazi: As someone who enjoyed “lurking” lately and even posted the odd comment, I’m dismayed at your choice of tactics. This section was quirky, fun to read, and kept me coming back. In todays P.C world, I appreciated the unfiltered voice of my local community. Really if I want heavily moderated pleasantries, I can tune into any number of mainstream newsites. Clearly you must fear the readers here are fragile and in need of benevolent guidance to express themselves, and protection from evil words! I would have expected better from the Coast. Caligula was very sexually explicit. I’m not sure if it’s still banned in NS, but it was, for a very long time. I saw a bootleg copy when I was about 18, it wasn’t bad, not sure how historically accurate it was (Caligula was in love with his sister, and his horse, apparently). I’m sure one can order it on the internets. I read a story once that they were no longer allowed filming, and Guccione had everyone climb a wall after midnight to get to the set.

Matt – I’m not interested in rehashing stuff said in the past but she went way beyond what was acceptable even in an online forum. You can say you are getting pissed off at the nova scotia bashing….but unfortunately, i am only speaking facts of this province. People here want things to be done this and that like Tim did with his article. The mentality of “we are a different society and nothing anyone else does or says can be true or benefit us” is prevelent here. Look at the articles in the paper about things such as the new $10 million dollar school, the library upgrades, sunday shopping, chickens in back yards, the cogswell exchange. This province/city does so much taking and money wasting as they talk all about the things they should be spending money on, that the people here, well they have hurt themselves as a society. They have the highest taxes, horrible facilities, unusual political structure and shotty health care system. Instead of looking elsewhere in this province, everyone here seems to be in the know. Call it bashing, i call it calling a spade a spade. I love some of the people here, hence me wanting to stay. However, the people here are making it too costly with the silliness that leads to higher taxes. Ps, i do joke, most here arent very funny.

I find it a little funny that Homie was offended by the ladies who told him he was going to hell (something they believe to be fact) because he thinks that IMPLIED they thought they were better than him. Yet, here Homie is letting us Nova Scotians know how we are stumbling our way into oblivion and is confused why we might be insulted by his “facts” (read beliefs) about our community. Homies “facts” about Nova Scotia are half-truths at best and making sweeping generalizations about our beliefs is clearly him stating opinion. The Homie’s conclusions also seem based on the same biased reasearh he accussed Tim of making. Even his commonwealth games rant was well referenced, but not exactly fair and balanced.

Qwerty, it is funny that you would have spat on me while i stayed in the homeless shelter. I wanted to see what it was like for those that i passed every night on my way to work. I couldnt comprehend really what could get someone in that position. Seeing it on tv or just talking to homeless people for a few minutes really doesnt give you the same knowledge. Just simple conversations led me to many of the uninformed opinions that were tossed in that thread. It was apparent that many that replied hadnt lived in that situation. I wanted to see what it was that could be done with them services. I wanted to see if the money that i donate and money i raise at some of the charity events was going to productive things or if it was just piddled away in the system. After staying at Metro Turning Point, i saw how the welfare system tries to help the residents there. I saw how the rules were laid out and how the residents tried to follow or get around the rules. This wasnt something that could be just observed in a day or two. Forgive me if that is arrogant, but when i host a fundraiser for a system, i would like to have an idea of how it is run. The metro turning point changed the lives of many men while i stayed there. I watched some real down and outters take advantage of the help provide while i watched others just whiddle themselves away with the bottle every night. I am proud to say i met some of the men that i did there and i say whats up to them and visit them in the new jobs they managed to keep or the homes they have managed to keep. I would have never crossed many of these cross sections of society without actually going there and being there. I can say, “previous to that experience, i was truly ignorant to the ways of the homeless people.” Now, i can look them in the eye and say, “i really understand”

I for one am calling bullshit on the Homie’s Metro Turning Point story. MTP says it provides “emergency shelter” for men experiencing homelessness. I highly doubt they would allow someone of means to stay there for six months, as a “research project”. Not buyin’ it…
News gal…. the rules and regulations there now, have changed since the closing of the church on brunswick street in the winter. The rules now are a bit tougher with the changing of staff in 2006. Out going management was far easier then than it is now. Less funding from social services has also had serious impact on the way it has operated. Take a few minutes and call and verify if i am correct or not. About 2006 they had a major change when a woman came back from a few years elsewhere. I forget her name, but she is there during the day.

In fact they have a policy where you are to turn in your pay check or part of it 3) you asked if they see you leaving each day for work…. the answer was no. If you knew what you were talking about, EVERYONE leaves the metro turning point at 8 am. They do not allow for showers, that is a night time thing. All the residents leave at 8 am and are free to do as they please ALL day untill the place again opens at 6 pm for residents. It is open at 9 am for programs and social help. Amazing that i seem to have this knowledge but am being called bullshit.

However, like Tim and the many of the people that post here, have you not noticed that any idea or suggestion for something that would involve government, there has not been a positive word said? Many people that were there, get an apartment, act like a change was going on, come check day, are so hammered and fucked up, they realize they have blown the check money, but no worries, we have metro turning point. Again, while some might find my actions deplorable, i have hosted enough fund raisers to want to know if my actions are going to good use. I could take someone’s word the money goes to the right area, but in this day and age, can you be sure? There is so many reports about people misusing donations, money that goes more to the heads of these charities than to the charity itself. Interestingly enough (perhaps to some)…If you set the “Repititious” filter on the RGH to “FULL ON” and the “Annoying” filter also to “FULL ON”, you get absolutely no output whatsoever…I beleive its what mathematicians call a null or empty set…If Tim put those same filters on the LTWWB site, I’ll bet he could get some quality time off for a change…

It is a bit egotistical to think you can post an opinion and get mad at anyone that questions your opinion or posts facts that show the opposite or the flaw in a potential theory. Call me boring and stick to the name calling, again, if it makes your day and adds to your credibility as to why you should be listened to more than anyone else including myself…… knock yourself out, take all the shots at me you wish. Homie, did you even read what Qwerty said to you? It’s not about what you post, it’s the way you post. Posting links to support your points would only make things worse, not better. Being a know-it-all has nothing to do with whether or not you actually know stuff and everything to do with the way you present your ideas. “Discussions” with you can be very one-sided and you clearly dominate any thread you choose to post on by reiterating your main talking points over and over, even if nobody is disagreeing with you. Also, some people are unimpressed with your ability to see things from “EVERY angle” and realize that even with your extensive ability to use google and wikipedia, there is often more to an issue than you present. These are the reasons people are chosing to use the words smug and know-it-all to describe you….not because your facts are wrong, or because people disagree with your opinions, it’s because the way you say things rubs people the wrong way. And, since it seems to be a common complaint, you should not just discount it as a few people being unnecessarily cranky. It bothers me to see that many of the regulars who make this forum entertaining and enlightening are posting less often. If they are being turned off because one poster is making them lose interest, I think that is bad for the forum. It’s nice to have a good and serious discussion once in a while, but that shouldn’t come at the expense of the more lighthearted banter about issues with a large who-gives-a-shit factor. That’s the bread and butter of this site.

I have to agree Miles, about your point that some people have stopped commenting because of certain other posters. There have been a few times when I’ve wanted to comment on someone’s bitch but feel it’s pointless because it won’t last as a discussion with some of that fun banter I also appreciate. There are a few people on this site who always seem to turn the comments page into a “let’s get argumentative and put people on the personal defensive” situation. It’s disappointing because we are missing out on a lot of good things, funny things, entertaining things that people just don’t want to post because they either don’t see the point or just don’t want to deal with the personal digs. It’s such a shame! That being said, I think the Web Nazi’s idea for pages like these are great! hopefully people will catch on and bitch at/about each other here instead of on posts that could incite interesting and fun discussions.

I have been a reader of this portion of the Coast for many months. I do not understand how this Homie person is being chastised. I come to read the comments and jokes around here, but since many of the “bitches” are on actual things in my community, why should the new voice not be heard? I know, the RHG is something of an “inside joke” – I can see why it would be annoying, but since there’s not a “report annoyances” button (unfortunately), we’re gonna go ahead and continue with our fun…As far as your pro-homie stance, I completely understand that as well. When he first started posting here, I was hugely pro-homie. Then one day, something… happened. I noticed a post where he claimed to have lived in a homeless shelter for 6 months despite being a, affluent, together guy… Alarm bells went for for a few of us, and when challenged, his story and his “motives” just started to stink more and more. I took a particular interest at that point, and it was when he told me I don’t have the experience he has and I don’t understand the issue (NOT verbatim, just the gist) that I turned into a full blown anti-homie activist. See, little did he know at that point, that I do know a GREAT DEAL about homelessness, it’s reasons, the cycles, the people, etc.It was his all-knowing, self-righteous attitude that turned the tide here against him, and it’s his relentless inability to recognize that certain people, despite the fact that we don’t like him or are a little more “light-hearted” in our approach, are possibly very intelligent, highly educated and have a world of real life experience. No, we may not go around posting our diplomas to the imaginary walls of LTWWB, or give profound speeches about our quests to find meaning in this world. We’re a little more humble than that. We tried explaining to Homie why he was so offensive to us, but turns out, it alot more fun to mock him. Tim gave us this post for that very reason, And I, as well as a few others, are going to continue making the most of it.
Personally, I do not take smug or self-righteous from his posts. The direct manner he takes makes it far easier to get his point. The first part of his posts are usually some out there thought. Then in a detailed round about manner, he gets to the point and covers many angles of each point. While you might have had an issue with the homeless thing, it was you that took it as him saying you didn’t know anything about the topic of homeless people. He didn’t specifically say you didn’t know anything. He also made it known that he didn’t claim to be an expert on the homeless, it was only the experience he personally was involved in. He cited rules and names of people that worked in the facility which would make him a bit more of a credible source than those that quoted the policies of the organization.You might not like what he did. I admire his going to actually find out the policies and the lifestyle of the people that many were commenting on in that OP. As someone that works in a homeless shelter, I find it odd that you are coming down on him, when there was far more uninformed comments incorrectly depicting the homeless people. It appears you need to look at the picture for what it is, not what you want it to be.
