  1. Halifax is cheap (2bdr downtown $900 bucks). Montreal is expensive (1 bdr downtown 1200 bucks). Try renting outside downtown if you want to live cheaply in halifax.

  2. Not too sure where this 2br is downtown. More like 900$ for a 1br. Lots of cheap apts in the north end and Q’Pool tho

  3. You might be living ‘downtown’ montreal, but at least the metro can get you there in short order. Check out the outskirts of Halifax (Armdale or West End) and you can find stuff. PBR!

  4. Come to the Darkside (Dartmouth, for those that are unaware) We have Cookies! and cheap places to live! I am expecting a response in regards to it being dingy, and grimey, and crime infested.. (I hear it all day from my co-workers) but its really NOT THAT BAD… I grew up here… With no war wounds!HighField Park (lovingly known as Crimefield, lol) A two BedRoom Apartment is $640…By Mic Mac Mall, REAL nice apartments, two levels, with balconies and fireplaces.. 1-2 bedrooms, $750..The Darkside isnt that bad!

  5. COOKIES!!!!! I’m soooo moving to the darkside. You really had me at dingy and crime-infested….but cookies…..that trumps GSW’s anyday.

  6. hahahahahaha!Mom always told me I was gonna be a great sales woman one day!

  7. LOL.. you guys are to funny! Faith you just moved to Dartmouth from where? Halifax? Dartmouth-1 Halifax-0 Keep em coming guys!

  8. Are landlords being greedy or trying to keep up with the skyrocketing prices of oil? As a homeowner, I’m paying $100 a week in heat. I can’t imagine how fucking much it’d be to heat a building. Somebody has to absorb the cost, that’s simple logic.

  9. Recently notified that my rent is going up, I had a great chat with the landlord about it. The cost of oil has almost doubled since last year. As a tenant, I understand and will pay more to stay smack in the middle of this god-forsaken town.

  10. Cheaper apartments aren’t always better. Cheaper landlords tend to lean towards being a slumlord althought some higher priced ones can too. Its a catch 22 situation. I’m just lucky i found a good landlord and reasonable rent. I got a two bedroom for $830 per month heat and hot water included on the Halifax side.

  11. Im living on cess pool rd and its $975 for a two bedroom with heat…kind of expensive in my opinion but then again its in close proximity to food and about a 15 min walk to work so no dealing with metro transit or traffic for me 🙂

  12. ok could we all just pause a moment and realize that while living downtown halifax might be more pricey than other sections of the city it is miles and miles cheaper than so many other places in this country! try getting a place downtown toronto or god forbid anywhere out west for anything liek the rents we pay here! that is if you can get one; in lots of other cities, particularly student cities like Halifax, there;s shortages which lead to increadibly crappy living arrangements. I lived out west for a bit, and paid almost a grand a month for an illegal basement suite where I had a shower curtain separating me from the crazy families rec room, I couldn’t open the windows or control the heat, I didn’t ahve a kitchen sink, and my landlord’s husband used to wander in whenever he pleased to use my toilet. I’m not saying landlords here are perfect, definatly not- but remember it could be so much worse!

  13. Either you guys were getting gouged in Halifax or I am getting bent over now, because there is NO WAY living in downtown halifax is more expensive than downtown Toronto or Vancouver

  14. You’re right, Miles – but in AB there’s a huge stigma attached to renting, so there are plenty of nice places (in the cities – I don’t know about rural or towns). It was a little tight for a while last year, and the landlords went crazy trying to hike up their rent, or convert to condos, but it cooled down.

  15. Rent is high here if you want to live in a nice place. Right now i live in the North end of Halifax and pay $825 /m for a 1bdrm, which includes H&HW. It’s a brand new building, and the units are gorgeous, so i don’t mind paying the extra for only one bedroom, because it’s in immaculate condition. Also, the building is very quiet and clean, and the location is great. I’m just thankful i don’t rent from a slumlord anymore.

  16. I grew up and spent my whole life in Montreal! While some things are equal or cheaper (like produce) in price, the cost of living is not! When my friends and family come to visit me they can’t believe the amount of space (3 levels, 3 bedrooms) that I get for $750/month and it only takes me 15mins. to drive to work downtown! Now if you don’t mind a 1 or 2 hour sit in traffic every morning you could probably get something cheaper outside of Montreal…but if you’re living in the city with access to metro (subway) you are not finding anything larger than a 1 bedroom for $1000!!! If you are currently living downtown Halifax you are getting ripped…take a few steps outside of the downtown core and there’s plenty of affordable housing!

  17. Rents definately drop dramatically the further away from the fairly-easy-to-access penninsula but if squeegee kids can afford halifax apartments (see previous threads) I have to say it can’t be that bad.

  18. Miles, I don’t think it’s what it used to be here in halifax anymore. You can get cheap rent, but it doesn’t come by that often. Bedford highway is quite the distance from the city and we all know nothing exists on that highway, you have to drive at least 10 mins in either direction to get to a grocery store or library of video store or what have you. busses except for a couple and takes you at least a half hour to get anywhere either car or bus, bus for sure, car depending on traffic. Rent on the bedford highway is now at $750 for a 1 bdrm apartment. I got lucky enough to find one with a balcony over looking the bedford basin for $625, but it’s not the most spacious i’ve lived in. In clayton park or fairview, a 2 bdrm now is over $800. Some are the same price of downtown. I looked. It took me 3 weeks to find a nice apartment that’s not overly expensive. I remember the days when i used to pay $650 for a 2 bedroom. That was 5 years ago for god’s sake!. I have no idea where in Downtown toronto you live miles but when i was there, looking through ads, all i found were apartments cheaper than halifax. and that was in downtown toronto. Like 2 blocks away from queen i think. or yonge. one of the 2 anyway. Food is definitely cheaper in montreal, i can vouch for that.In downtown edmonton, my 1 bdrm was $650 a month. Across the street from save-on-foods and shopping strip.

  19. hedgehog, rent may be more expensive in other cities like Toronto or Calgary but they also make considerable more money than we do. This city is over run with jobs only paying $10/hr but we still pay $900 or more for a one bedroom apartment. It’s ridiculous. How are people suppose to save money for a house if we’re being gouged by rent prices and increases?

  20. Sorry to disturb you there yourmom, but i was in Toronto and Alberta and Victoria and their rent is actually cheaper than here. It’s mainly the price of property. I also was in montreal. Most of the stuff i saw was same price as halifax and less.

  21. It’s true about rent being higher in Halifax. The place I live in now is in he middle of downtown, it’s big and nice and has everything included and it’s cheaper than what I was paying a few years ago in Halifax for a shithole. Plus we make about 5x than we were (collectively), and the overall cost of living is lower. Sorry.

  22. I too live in a “Property” owned by Greedy Landlords, It just “Kills” me what they get away with. I was paying around the 600 mark yrs ago when I moved in then a new Property company bought the building I am in. The rent went up 50.00 a month EVERY year. My carpets have holes in them, my fridge has NO racks on the door, they FELL OFF..My freezer has no racks on the door, it fell off. My stove is broken, I need a hammer and a pair of plyers to get my shower to come on.. My apartment needs paint…balcony is in desperate need of paint and whenI asked them to replace my bathroom door with a new one because the onld one had holes in it from the previous tenants, they brought me a DIRTY white USED door, telling me that they are trying to keep costs down. I’m all for keeping costs down, but if your coming and raising my rent EACH year, the least you can do is bring me a NEW BATHROOM DOOR! This year my rent did not go up 50.00 a month, it went up 40.00 a month PLUS 25.00 a MONTH for an OUTDOOR parking spot in a parking lot so small I cannot open my car door to even life out groceries and I had my car stero stolen from this LOVELY parking spot that they want 25.00 a month for!! The “cow” above me brings her drunk friends over and they accidentaly drop beer on MY balcony, once is an accident…3 times is NOT! Hey boyfriend threw up all over the stair way etc and the property owners did NOTHING.They just fill up the apartments with whatever loser is around at the time, they arent concerned about the quality of people they put in or the quality of your apartment, they know that when you move out, some other sucker will move in and pay them rent. There used to be a rental law that wouldnt allow these Killer Property owners to take advantage of people like us..there used to be a limit on the rental increase but there is NO longer a law protecting the tenant, why? these companies step into our cities, they buy ALL the aprtments they can buy..and raise the rent to a level that is JUST NOT AFFORDABLE, but it doesn’t end there, they are now buying trailor parks and storage sheds, where does it end? WHo will protect the little people who work their ass off?

  23. the problem is that this province doesnt have a very tough Landlord/tennant Act. Most other provinces have a tribunal/board that hears cases like this. Rent cant go up like it can here. NS is desperate to keep people here, so they let landlords charge low rent and dont have to up keep shit……. many of you that pay $850…. should be happy, in any other city this beautiful in the eyes, your place costs $1200

  24. so you’re saying we should be happy with something just because some cities are worse off than ours? IS THAT a solution? Get real.
