Ok Barrington Superstore, we get it. You’re putting on some good PR by replacing plastic bags with the reusable “green bags”. Sounds great! But where the hell do you get off charging people a dollar for this? If you really gave a damn about the environment, you would not be expecting your student-ghetto university patrons to foot the bill.

As it stands now, my money, or lack thereof, is more important to me than the environment. I’m going to Sobey’s from now on.

Fuck green bags. Fuck the environment.

Some poor student

  1. Wow, is it a dollar for just one bag, or a dollar for several? I dont mind paying a dollar if it’s going to get me say,10 bags, but for 1..that’s a bit crazy!

  2. If the reusable bags were free you probably wouldn’t bother to reuse then and just get a new one everytime you went to the store and “forgot” your nice hevy-duty reusable bag at home. I think its a reasonable price and a reasonable incentive to reduce the amount of plastic bags we consume. 2 dollars (or 2 kraft dinner units) will get you a bag for each hand which should be more than enough room to tote a person’s groceries home. you could maybe save up if you don’t have the 2 bucks now.

  3. No, that’s a crock of shit. You mean to tell me that I have to pay for the right to transport your wares out of your facility…A DOLLAR for one bag that is slightly larger than a normal plastic bag? Are you fucking out of your mind.I’m going to come with my own bag that says “Fuck Stupor Store!”That or “Sobey’s is Better” and parade around the store. They finally found a way to get more money, too bad you won’t get MY money.

  4. Sobeys has these bags too, but they are much bigger! I actually perfer them over the stuporstore ones, they hold a lot of weight and you can put 10 times the stuff in them as a small plastic bag,i managed to win a few when they had a contest on, and everytime i get groceries i just buy 1 more,Doing one trip from your car to your house in the rain/snow etc is much better then 4-5 trips!

  5. So I wonder if you can use Sobeys environmental bags at the Superstore? The ones at Superstore are waaaayyyy too small.

  6. If you take a refillable mug to your favourite coffee joint would you expect them to provide the mug free? No. that would be silly. And as mentioned above, you don’t HAVE to buy the bags, you can just recycle the crappy plastic ones. No big deal. Be thankful it’s not like some places where they do charge one or two cents a bag everytime you go. And remember, the enviro bags are more expensive to manufacture, some are really heavy duty cloth bags, and I don’t think a store has an obligation to provide that free. It’s a buck. That sounds fair. And Ellbee, I have bags from a number of different stores and they never mind me packing my groceries in a competitors bag. they really just want the money for the groceries.

  7. Oops, for some reason I thought you were saying that the Superstore was now providing green plastic bags at $1 each. If the bags are fabric, then I’d have to agree with Miles. Where I live now, bags are 20p each, no matter if it’s a department store or grocery. Sure, it’s a bit of a pain in the ass; as I’m nearly always forgetting my big fabric bags, but if it helps people cut down on the waste they produce, I’m all for it. Sometimes we need a little push in order to move beyond what’s convenient for the sake the environment.

  8. I live near a Whole Foods where you can also buy a bag for $1 but each time you use it, they discount your bill by 10 cents. So, you get the money back and you’re not stuck with tons of plastic bags under the kitchen sink. It’s a small incentive but its worth it- especially if you have a few bags and shop a lot. Superstore could do the same!

  9. I don’t mind paying a dollar for a shopping bag; however, I was at MEC the other day, and they want 7 bucks for almost the exact same kind of bag. Shya, right!

  10. Halifax Farmers’ Markets, Dartmouth Farmers’ Markets, Farmer Clem’s , and other Farmers’ Markets sell FRESHER, CHEAPER fruits and veggies, :)! No idea if they are organics though.
