The lack of attention given to hate crimes and bullying against wiccans/pagans is starting to tick me off. I identify as pagan, and the acts of violence and emotional abuse I’ve witnessed and been a victim of myself is awful.

Right now, everyone is talking about how the bullying of gay people needs to stop, and that we need to be more tolerant and accepting of Muslims, and I certainly agree with that; but the lack of coverage and discussion about the rights of Pagans is quite frustrating. We seem to be the exception to the rule; a Wiccan family in Halifax was forced to move as they lived in a predominantly Baptist area; the males in the family had been beaten up because of their religion, and other acts of violence were also committed against them. If this was a gay couple and their family, or a family with a different religion, this would have been all over the news.

When I was in junior high, my pagan friends and I were continually bullied and our teachers would turn a blind eye to it, but they would step in if an overweight kid was being bullied. Not only does the media seem to mostly ignore the discrimination we are faced with, journalists and TV show writers perpetuate myths that we are violent Satan worshipers with no morals; nothing could be further from the truth but they can’t be bothered to look up facts that they could get on Wikipedia to learn about the religion.

I think it’s great that we are addressing the bullying of homosexuals and that Muslims are being defended but is it to much to ask for the same thing for Pagans? —Marie

  1. yes, this has always pissed my covens off too. time for these damn christians to let my people alone. and as far as that goes, leave the satanists alone too. or one day, you all might just end up in the pit of hell, then you can kiss all your sorry asses so long. go get em’ daddy satan.

  2. All these comments just go to prove your point hey OB?
I never heard anything about the family you mentionned. I think it’s sad when anyone is discriminated against like that. As long as you’re not hurting anyone else or infringing on anyone elses rights, you have the right to live peacefully without judgment and abuse.

Why don’t you make it a point to get the word out?

Meanwhile… read the book “Salem Falls” by Jodi Picoult. She talks a lot about Wiccan religion and doesn’t seem to stray from the truth.

  3. Now, now PF. Nobody is piling burning fagots about the OP’s feet and singing Te Deums. All organized religion is fair game and the target of satire, except of course for Islam, which is the true word of Supreme Allah as revealed to the Prophet Muhammed, Blessings Be Upon Him.
Phew, that 767 has veered away and is heading back to the airport. >; )
And in later news. I’ve just been turned into a newt. Coincidence? I Think not.

  4. Well, if that’s the case, my group, the Big-Bouncy-Booby-Broads, should also get some respect. Fuck, as long as ignorance exists, you’re always gonna have haters so toughen up, kid.

  5. I realize no one is burning a bundle of sticks around this bitcher… and yeah you’re right, all religion is open for satire. When I went into my rant about no one deserving being bullied and stuff, I meant what happened twoards the family forced to move.

  6. I understand PF. I am curious too about the incident of the family being harrassed. And where in Halifax is there a “Predominantly Baptist Area”? Any clarification OP?. I guess my attitude toward religion is the same as my attitude toward prescription medication. There is no earthly reason for anyone else to know about it. Not terribly realistic I know, but it could save an awful lot of grief in the long run

  7. My intollerance of pro-life lunatics? My bad… what I meant to say was, and truly do believe, that everyone has the right to have an opinion, but they do not have the right to shove their opinion down other peoples throats. Yes, I do think the pro-life people have a right to believe what they want, and not all of them are lunatics. BUT the ones who stand around with signs trying to scare and basically bully women getting abortions are lunatics.
I’m FUMING still and can’t get over it… I’m too emtional for my own good Hugo.

  8. PF – we all know what it’s like to feel strongly about something, and the puzzlement & frustration that goes along with others not being able to see what seem obvious to us.

  9. I don’t understand why you don’t call upon your god’s & have them deal with these assholes for you .
Perhaps they could say, let a pea plant start growing in one of their lungs…that’d show them bastards. OR like the guy from Russia with a tree had sprouted in him… Or if you don’t want to cause actual physical trauma… your god(s) could stop the flow of life to their grass & other plants which would die & their homes would look really crappy !
By your post I can’t tell if your a pagan who worships living things or if your a god/goddes/living things type.
But even so , that guy who was in the news recently suffering from a pea plant growing in his lung really suffered & needed surgery. So I went with that as opposed to a Christian fire & brimstone kind of doom on your enemies.

Good luck, happy chanting/praying/handfasting or whatever gets you off .

  10. I’m going to call this BS until the OB can give more details. Frankly I don’t think people care one way or the other about pagans, New Age or whatever.

I’ve seen cities that have Little Italies, Chinatowns, Irish sectors, or even black areas, etc, but I haven’t seen Little RC towns, Baptist towns, Anglican towns, etc, except in one horse towns.

  11. I’m very much surprised the younger generations even still care about any of this. When I was brought up (almost 29), I never, nor did any of my peers, care if you were Jewish, Catholic, black, white, purple, Pagan, gay, etc. I dunno, maybe it’s just me. I guess it’s the environment you were brought up in.

  12. baptists beating up the pagans?
    crazy….
considering they stole half their religion from pagans..
such odd times we live in.

I guess they want to steal people’s self respect now too.

  13. Why not just end intolerance? Why does it have to be against a certain group?

p.s you’re pagan, you’re gunna have to put up with some shit…

  14. Like why don’t you just cast a spell or something? Jesus.

Of course I kid, but don’t know where to start with this. I suspect that Pagans are so small in number the media believes they don’t warrant any coverage. A few of my counterparts are Pagan and they’ve explained it to me and it’s sad that some groups are oppressed … yeah, it’s sad.

  15. well you can tally the majority of them up soon enough…
the commons on their new year’s celebration.

Me, I’ll be at costumed laser tag myself….

  16. Donkey – I suspect that Pagans are so small in number. You can find Pagans on E-Cauldron. There are many sub-categories in Paganism. Pagan is an umbrella term, used to describe religions that worship multiple deities. There may be small numbers in each sub-category of Paganism, but Pagans as a whole, there are a lot of them. I’m one.

It’s unfair how Pagans are mistreated, especially Wiccans. George Bush when he was governor of Texas, said that Wiccans in the military should not have religious status.

I’ve never personally experienced any mistreatment, because, not many people know that I’m a Pagan. But, the people
who do were already close to me, and when
I tell them about it, they actually think it
    sounds cool.

  17. haha, all is clear now…baptists don’t like to stretch either. bunch of grumpy guts…grrrrr

  18. Rastafarians value peace, eat healthy, trust in Jah to see them through tough times, make cool music and don’t mind twisting a few. Praise Jah! Jah glory!

  19. BRO TIM…you need to head down to Mississippi, & in any small town set up residence & proclaim your distaste in the local religion….I would like to mention you should keep at least 1 bag packed !

  20. So, I’ve never personally experienced any mistreatment from anyone about being wiccan, I get more flak for being a woman than anything else that i am or am not. I believe in human rights…that no matter what your background, age, race, religious beleifs, we can all treat eachother with a little respect…I know that just by writing a comment it’s not going to change the world, or how people act in it, but reading some of the previous posts…turning people into newts…”calling upon your god’s to deal with the assholes”. The only thing i have to say to that is, An harm none, do what ye will, Mind the Three-fold Laws you should three times bad and three times good….I believe the Christian equivalent would be, do unto others as you would have done unto you…..:) People are going to be ostracized and bullied until the end of mankind, we very well may be our own self destruction. unless every person stops being prejudiced and accepts eachother for who and what they are…live and let live…or legalize pot…at least we would see a rise in the numbers for “love the way we love”…..blessed be!

  21. I seen that Bro Tim.
it doesn’t have to be 1 horse towns.
That so called ‘bible belt’ down there has a lot of brainwashed people !

  22. Ever see the documentary where Richard Dawkins goes around telling religious believers just how full of shit they are. Deep in the heart of God, Guts & Guns country he had no trouble getting in the face of some plastic haired mega church pastor and telling him that he was a deluded idiot. Later, talking to a madrassah student outside a mosque in Islamabad, the good professor was not nearly so confrontational.
    I wonder why…………? >; )

  23. The pagan family ‘forced’ to move lived on Greystone in Spryfield. Didn’t know it was a ‘Baptist’ area, but definitely a ‘anyone different from me sucks ass’ area.

  24. That could be anyone who reads at higher than a grade Six level, has a job that doesn’t involve peddling crystal meth, or wears shirts that demonstrate they have mastered the technology of the button. Not neccesarily a return to those carefree days of Salem, Mass.
