Murder, child molestation and, worst of all, Peter MacKay. These are the thing putting our city’s name on people’s minds. Full sordid details below.
CLAIMING INNOCENCE
from Plattsburgh, New York
Glen Race was in court last night in New York State, and the Press Republican was there taking photos of the accused murderer in his weird white spit mask. The accompanying story says Race pleaded innocent to the killing of New York’s Darcy Manor. And the next step as the wheels of justice turn is:
Race will be held without bail and will undergo a psychological evaluation as per the request of Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie.
Race has paranoid schizophrenia, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, attorney Joel E. Pink — who represents the man’s family — has said he would pursue an insanity plea should Race be prosecuted in that province, where he is accused of murdering two men prior to the killing of Manor.
“We’re not concerned at all about that,” Wylie said later about having a similar defense brought in Clinton County. (story here)
Be sure to look at the photos with the mask.
FACING THE MUSIC
from Toronto
Ernest MacIntosh has been living in India since 1994, and if he wasn’t in a hurry to come back to Nova Scotia, it might be because he’s facing 43 charges related to sex crimes against boys. But the Toronto Star reports that the accused pedophile has returned, coming through the Halifax airport en route to a hearing tomorrow in Port Hawkesbury.
A combination of bureaucratic bungling – he had his passport renewed twice while living in India despite being a wanted man – and government indifference have been blamed for the lengthy delay in bringing MacIntosh back to Canada.
It wasn’t until last year that Canadian authorities, described by New Delhi police as being asleep at the switch, asked India to arrest the bearded electronics sales manager and ship him back to Canada. (story here)
It’s just like mom always said: You can’t trust those bearded electronics sales managers.
TALKING WEASEL
from Montreal, Guelph and beyond
Canada’s dickhead foreign affairs minister Peter MacKay is getting shown for the wiggling weasel he is over the Bill Casey thing. Casey, the longtime member of parliament from Musquodoboit Valley, was tossed out of the Conservative Party this week for voting against the Conservative budget, which undermines the Atlantic Accord on offshore gas money and thus sticks it to Nova Scotia. In a Canadian Press story that’s getting published widely, we’re reminded:
Just three weeks ago, MacKay claimed that such expulsions wouldn’t happen, saying during parliamentary debate: “We will not throw a member out of caucus for voting his conscience. There will be no whipping, flipping, hiring or firing on budget votes as we saw with the Liberal government.”
But at some bullshit government announcement event the other day in Halifax, MacKay said:
“When it comes to the issue of the budget and the Atlantic Accord we’re in the third period,” he said. “You don’t leave the ice when the game is not over.”
He justified his party’s decision to expel Casey by arguing he “never believed” the veteran MP would actually vote against the government on a money bill.
Some versions of the story also dredge up:
MacKay’s written promise to David Orchard at the June 2003 Progressive Conservative leadership convention, in which MacKay pledged that the party wouldn’t be merged with the Canadian Alliance.MacKay broke that written agreement four months later.
Different sites and papers edit the CP story for length. A long version is here in Montreal’s Westmount Examiner; a short verion is here at the Quelph Mercury. You can find lots more where those came from.
Am I crazy for thinking Elizabeth May might beat Lyin’ MacKay? Send opinions or Halifax links here.
