Don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for weeks. But I apologize for the last few days of silence on the Burning Ears front. Among other thrilling tasks, I got to tweaking the search methods that power the Ears, and would have posted earlier but for getting buried an avalanche of material old and new. I’ll run through this stuff briefly below, with plans to be back on track with daily Burns starting on Monday.
THE OLD STUFF
from Hamilton (Ont.) to Adelaide (Oz)
The slew of past Halifax references I dredged up lately includes much of note, like this 2006 paper on tsunamis from a guy at McMaster, which points out “the signal given by ocean waves generated by the Sumatra earthquake was felt globally; within 48 h distinguishable tsunami waves were measured by wave gages in Antarctica, Chile, Rio di Janeiro, the west coast of Mexico, the east coast of the United States, and at Halifax, Nova Scotia.” Remember? I didn’t. Another fact I’d forgotten comes from this history of the law school at the University of Adelaide. Talking about the state of legal education in the 1800s — UofA was Australia’s second law school when it opened in 1883 — the history article says:
Following continental tradition, law was firmly established as a discipline in universities in Canada’s province of Quebec, where French law predominated. It was not until October 1883, however, that the first students were admitted to a university law school in a common law jurisdiction in Canada. This was at Dalhousie Law School in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
We’re number one for common law! We’re number one for common law!
THE NEW STUFF
from Ohio, Los Angeles and somewhere in the Netherlands
A Toronto magazine named Halifax one of the 10 best places to live in Canada, but the only reference that turned up to the story was in our own Herald. How weird that people all across the country weren’t singing our praises. But in news that is being shared, Ohio State University is bragging that one Anthony Kelly — former OSU sports stars and current member of the New York Titans — is coming to Halifax for next weekend’s lacrosse tournament (more here)
A press release coming out of LA from Crystal Cruises offers to help other Americans scratch their itch to visit Canada’s east coast, with a new cruise package that lists “Halifax by Hummer” among “the diverse authentic, exclusive and unusual experiences ashore” (read it and feel authentically weepy).
Finally, at her blog on a Dutch social networking site, a woman named Iga posted a random bunch of facts with her commentary. I think this is the relevant part:
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada has the most bars per capita than anywhere else in the world. (raad es waar mijn ouders dit jaar weer voor de 3e keer naartoe gaan?) (story here)
Babel Fish translates Iga’s comment as “Council ash where my parents this year for 3e the time naartoe go?” which really says it all.
I’m fishing for Halifax sightings abroad. Send links here.
This article appears in May 3-9, 2007.
